  • The poor machinability material such as austenite stainless steel(STS304) is emphasized on the wide use of HSSE for the tapping operation. The difficulty can be entirely to tapping torque due to chip formation through the hole of tap. The object of this study is to investigate tap geometry affecting the tapping torque from a practical point of view. The study shows that the optima tapping torque is affected by the tap geometry and cutting condition for STS304.

고속태핑에 있어서 탭의 형상과 절삭토크의 특성 (On Tap Geometry and Characteristics of Torque in High Speed Tapping)

  • Tapping is one of the most widely used machining operations. There are several methodes of producing external screw threads, e.g. turning, milling with single or multiple cutter, rolling, and grinding, but the methods available for cutting enternal threads are less numerous, and for threads in small holes, tapping is employed almost exclusively. In this study, the tap with the various geometry has been developed in order to tap special workmaterial at considerably higher cutting speed than that of the conventional HSS tap. The experimental tests are run with various cutting speed by using a piezo type tool dynamometer to measure tapping torque. Tapping torque is affected by the design of the tap, which seems to be due to internal friction and shearing of the metal. It is clarified that the process of chip formation strongly depends on rake angle, relief angle, angle of twist.

  • In this study, tap wear was analyzed not only to predict the tap life time but also to propose an improved tap design. Because rake angle and thread relief of tap are the significant factors in geometry of tap, these two factors were picked as the experiment variables. The experiment was conducted with six types of tap which have 6$^{\circ}$ , 8$^{\circ}$ and 12$^{\circ}$ of rake angles with 0,08mm and 0.14 mm of thread relief. From the measured cutting force, it could be known that cutting torque was low at the large the rake thread relief and tool life was long as rake angle became large. Eventually, tool life is longest when rake angle is 12$^{\circ}$ and the with 0.08mm thread relief. Aand the width of crater wear and that of flank wear were measured when a tapping torque was 20 [$kg_f$-mm] . Most of the measured values were above the width of tool wear[$V_B$=O.O3m], which means that tool life is over.

  • The various geometry of tap been developed in order to tap special workmaterial at considerably higher cutting speed than that of the conventional HSS tap.   • This paper aims at developing a torque model for the high-speed tapping with small-diameter taps. As recent industries such as automobile and information technology grows, taps smaller than 5mm in diameter are needed much more. In that occasion, the friction force between a tap surface and a workpiece plays much more important role in the tapping torque than in he larger tapping. Tapping mechanism was analysed based on the tap geometry. It has two steps : one is a forward cutting composed of the chamfered threading and full threading and the other is the backward cutting. The torque by the cutting force in the chamfered threading is calculated using the cutting area and the specific cutting force while the torque by the friction force, which is rather dominant than the cutting force both in the full threading and in the backward cutting, is calculated using the normal force on the threads and the friction coefficient. The experiment has shown that the results by the proposed torque model fit quite well with the acutal measurements within the error of 10%.

제주 용암해수로 제조한 쿠키의 품질특성 (Quality of Cookies Formulated with Jeju Magma Seawater)

  • Purpose: The present study explored cookie making performance using Jeju magma seawater to elucidate the effects of minerals in water on quality of baked goods. Methods: Seven water samples were analyzed for their mineral content, pH and water hardness. Starch pasting properties of flour in water samples was analyzed using RVA, and cookie making performance using water samples was evaluated with the AACCI wire-cut cookie baking method. Quality of cookies was measured by weight loss during baking, cookie geometry, color, and firmness. Results: Hardness of water samples ranged from 0-4200, and mineral content was in the order of magma seawater > 100% ED mineral water > 50% ED mineral water > 10% ED mineral water > tap water > Samdasoo > distilled water. RVA results showed that water hardness exhibited significant relationships with pasting temperature (p<0.05, R=0.863), peak viscosity (p<0.001, R=0.944), final viscosity (p<0.05, R=0.861), and setback (p<0.05, R=0.782). Cookie baking results showed that cookie diameter increased in the order of magma seawater < 100% ED mineral water < 50% ED mineral water < 10% ED mineral water $\approx$ tap water < Samdasoo < distilled water. Conclusion: As mineral content in water increased, flour pasting temperature and viscosity increased, whereas cookie diameter decreased with color fading. However, cookies formulated with 50% ED mineral water showed similar cookie geometry and texture to those with tap water. Therefore, controlling the mineral content of water can be successfully applied to produce mineral-enriched cookies.

Mathematical Models for Optimal Bead Geometry for GMA Welding Process

  • A major concern in Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding process is the determination of welding process variables such as wire diameter, gas flow rate, welding speed, arc current and welding voltage and their effects on the desired weld bead dimensions and shape. To successfully accomplish this objective, 81 welded samples from mild steel AS 1204 flats adopting the bead-on-plate technique were employed in the experiment. The experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model to predict the magnitude of bead geometry as follows; weld bead width, weld bead height, weld bead penetration depth, weld penetration shape factor, weld reinforcement shape factor, weld bead total area, weld bead penetration area, weld bead reinforcement area, weld bead dilution, length of weld bead penetration boundary and length of weld bead reinforcement boundary, and to establish the relationships between weld process parameters and bead geomery. Multiple regression analysis was employed for investigating and modeling the GMA process and significance test techniques were applied for the interpretation of the experimental data.

Data-mining modeling for the prediction of wear on forming-taps in the threading of steel components

  • An experimental approach is presented for the measurement of wear that is common in the threading of cold-forged steel. In this work, the first objective is to measure wear on various types of roll taps manufactured to tapping holes in microalloyed HR45 steel. Different geometries and levels of wear are tested and measured. Taking their geometry as the critical factor, the types of forming tap with the least wear and the best performance are identified. Abrasive wear was observed on the forming lobes. A higher number of lobes in the chamber zone and around the nominal diameter meant a more uniform load distribution and a more gradual forming process. A second objective is to identify the most accurate data-mining technique for the prediction of form-tap wear. Different data-mining techniques are tested to select the most accurate one: from standard versions such as Multilayer Perceptrons, Support Vector Machines and Regression Trees to the most recent ones such as Rotation Forest ensembles and Iterated Bagging ensembles. The best results were obtained with ensembles of Rotation Forest with unpruned Regression Trees as base regressors that reduced the RMS error of the best-tested baseline technique for the lower length output by 33%, and Additive Regression with unpruned M5P as base regressors that reduced the RMS errors of the linear fit for the upper and total lengths by 25% and 39%, respectively. However, the lower length was statistically more difficult to model in Additive Regression than in Rotation Forest. Rotation Forest with unpruned Regression Trees as base regressors therefore appeared to be the most suitable regressor for the modeling of this industrial problem.

수중음향통신을 위한 광대역 FIR 빔형성기 (A Broadband FIR Beamformer for Underwater Acoustic Communications)

  • 수중음향통신을 위한 빔형성 기법은 대역폭이 반송주파수에 비해서 큰 광대역 신호 특성을 고려해야한다. 수중 음향통신에서는 협대역 신호가정이 성립하지 않는다. 본 논문에서는 기저 대역 배열신호 모델을 이용한 수중음향통신 광대역 FIR 빔형성기에 대해서 논한다. 반송주파수 25Hz, 심볼 속도 5kHz인 QPSK 방식의 수중음향통신에 있어서 광대역 FIR 빔형성기를 고려했다. 배열 센서는 8개의 등방형 센서로 구성된 선형등간격 구조이고, 센서간 간격은 반송주파수 파장의 절반이다 컴퓨터 모의실험을 통하여 각 센서에 길이가 2인 FIR 필터를 채택하고 탭간 간격이 심볼 주기의 1/4일 때 광대역 FIR 빔형성기는 최적 신호 대 간섭잡음비에 근접하였으며, 기존의 통상적인 협대역 빔형성기보다 신호 대 간섭 잡음비가 0.5dB 향상된 결과를 보였다. 광대역 FIR 빔형성기의 성능은 FIR 필터 길이가 특정 값 이상으로 커지면 더 나빠지고, 탭간 간격이 심볼 주기의 절반보다 작으면 탭간 간격은 성능에 영향을 주지 않았다. 탭간 간격 이 심볼 주기와 같은 경우에, 훈련 신호열이 통상적인 경우보다 더 많이 필요하였다.

고속탭핑에 있어서 절삭토크에 관한 연구 (A Study on Tapping Torque in High Speed Tapping)

  • In order to analytically predict tapping torque and thrust force in high speed tapping, a cutting model for main cutting edge with a uniformly restricted tool-chip contact area were developed. From this model equations are derived for the prediction of tapping torque given the cutting conditions, tap geometry, and an empirical factor which is related to the workmaterial. Computed values of torque is shown to compare favorably with those obtained from tapping tests on 16MnCr5. The applied torque about the cutting edge of teeth at lead chamfer is estimated respectively and it is shown that observed value is gradually decreased with following teeth.
