In this study, numerical simulations for a single fixed truncated circular cylinder in regular waves were conducted to investigate the nonlinear wave run-up under various dampers and wave period conditions. The present study used the volume of fluid (VOF) technique to capture the air-water interface. The unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equation with the k- 𝜖 turbulence model was solved using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software STAR-CCM+. First, a systematic spatial convergence study was conducted to assess the performance and precision of the present numerical wave tank. The numerical scheme was validated by comparing the numerical results of wave run-up on a bare truncated cylinder with the experimental results, and a good agreement was achieved. Then, a series of parametric studies were carried out to examine the wave run-up time series around the truncated cylinder with single and dual dampers in terms of the first- and second-order harmonic and mean set-up components. Additionally, the local wave field and the flow velocity vectors adjacent to the cylinder were evaluated. It was confirmed that under short wave conditions, the high position of the damper led to a noticeable increase in the wave run-ups with significant changes in the first- and second-order harmonic components.

A fault is considered as a variation of physical parameters; therefore the design of fault detection and identification(FDI) can be reduced to the parameter identification of a non linear system and to the association of the set of the estimated parameters with the mode of faults. Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System which contains multiple linear models as consequent part is used to model nonlinear systems. Generally, the linear parameters in neuro-fuzzy inference system can be effectively utilized to fault diagnosis. In this paper, we proposes an FDI system for nonlinear systems using neuro-fuzzy inference system. The proposed diagnostic system consists of two neuro-fuzzy inference systems which operate in two different modes (parallel and series-parallel mode). It generates the parameter residuals associated with each modes of faults which can be further processed by additional RBF (Radial Basis Function) network to identify the faults. The proposed FDI scheme has been tested by simulation on two-tank system.

An induction heating (IH) resonant converter, as well as its coil design method, is proposed in this study to improve the heat capability of low- and high-resistance IH vessels. Conventional IH resonant converters have been designed only for heating high-resistance containers designed for IH application. Thus, the primary current in the resonant tank becomes extremely high to transfer the rated power when the converter heats the low-resistance vessel. As a result, the rated power cannot be transferred due to overcurrent flows against the rated switch current. Hence, the optimal number of coil turns and proper operating frequency to heat high- and low-resistance vessels are proposed in this study by analyzing an IH load model. Simulation and experimental results using a 2.4 kW prototype resonant converter and its IH coil validate the proposed design.

The wave-impact load on offshore structures can be divided into green-water and wave-slamming impact loads. These wave impact loads are known to have strong nonlinear characteristics. Although the wave impact loads are dealt with in the current classification rules in the shipping industry, their strong nonlinear characteristics are not considered in detail. Therefore, to investigate these characteristics, wave-impact loads induced by a breaking wave on a circular cylinder were analyzed. A model test was carried out to measure the wave-impact loads due to breaking waves in a two-dimensional (2D) wave tank. To generate a breaking wave, the focusing wave method was applied. A series of 2D tank tests under a horizontal wave impact was carried out to investigate the structural responses of the cylindrical structure, which were obtained from the measured model test data. According to the results, we proposed a structural damage-estimation procedure of an offshore tubular member due to a wave impact load. Furthermore, a recommended wave-impact load is suggested that considers the minimum required thickness of each member. From the experimental results, we found that the required minimum thickness is dependent on the impact pressure located in a three-dimensional space on the surface of a tubular member.
A design procedure for a ship with minimum total resistance has been developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) to search for optimized hull form and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique. The friction resistance is estimated using the ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line formula and the wave making resistance is evaluated using a potential-flow panel method based on Rankine sources with nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. The geometry of hull surface is represented and modified using B-spline surface patches during the optimization process. Using the Series 60 hull ($C_B$ =0.60) as a base hull, the optimization procedure is applied to obtain an optimal hull that produces the minimum total resistance for the given constraints. To verify the validity of the result, the original model and the optimized model obtained by the optimization process have been built and tested in a towing tank. It is shown that the optimal hull obtained around $13\%$ reduction in the total resistance and around $40\%$ reduction in the residual resistance at a speed tested compared with that of the original one, demonstrating that the present optimization tool can be effectively used for efficient hull form designs.

Several formulae have been proposed to estimate the viscous resistance of ships by wake surveys. Both the total head and the velocity should be measured. The integration of he total head loss shows over estimations of the resistance by about 10%. Therefore measurements of the velocity are required, which need much more works. A simple method is suggested in this paper to take accout of the velocity-defect from the measured total head. It gives reasonable estimations of the viscous resistance within the experimental accuracy. Experimental data of a low-drag body of revolution in the wind-tunnel and Series 60 model, CB=0.6 in the tank are used to verify the suggested formula.
The EG/AD/S model ice, originally developed by Timco (1986), was selected as the primary model ice material for the newly built MOERI Ice Model Basin in Korea. However, the existence of a sugar component in the EG/AD/S mixture may cause a serious maintenance problem, as described in certain references. This study focuses on the tests of the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and the EG/AD model ice. In order to understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice and to find a possible substitute for sugar, a series of tests with the EG/AD model ice were performed, and the results were compared to those of the EG/AD/S model ice. The relatively large size of the MOERI Ice Model Basin made it difficult to control the initial strength of model ice, so it took a much longer time to achieve the target strength. In order to obtain a lower strength and stiffness for the model ice, the amount of chemical additives may be varied to achieve the desired strength level. This paper is a preliminary study aimed at seeking a possible substitute for the original EG/AD/S model ice for utilization in a large-scale ice tank. To understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice, the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and EG/AD model ice, such as flexural strength, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, were tested in the laboratory condition and compared to each other. The warm-up procedure seems to be an important factor to reduce ice strength in the tests, so it is discussed in detail.

In this study, an experimental investigation has been made of the applicability of outer-layer vertical blades to real ship model. After first devised by Hutchins and Choi (2003), the outer-layer vertical blades demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing total drag of flat plate (Park et al., 2011) with maximum drag reduction of 9.6%. With a view to assessing the effect in the flow around a ship, the arrays of outer-layer vertical blades have been installed onto the side bottom and flat bottom of a 300k KVLCC model. A series of towing tank test has been carried out to investigate resistance (CTM) reduction efficiency and improvement of stern wake distribution with varying geometric parameters of the blades array. The installation of vertical blades led to the CTM reduction of 2.15~2.76% near the service speed. The nominal wake fraction was affected marginally by the blades array and the axial velocity distribution tended to be more uniform by the blades array.

The purpose of present study is to find an appropriate hull shape of a container ship which can operate along the coast and through canals. A 200TEU class container ship is designed with dimensional modifications of an existing 140TEU container ship which is a domestic coastwise vessel. For the fore-body shape including bulbous bow. additional modification is done by changing the sectional area curve and frameline shape using the data of series resistance test. The model tests are performed in the towing tank to measure total resistance sinkage and trim of the model. And a finite-difference method based on MAC method is utilized to analyze the flow field around the ships in deep and restricted water. From the result of model test and numerical analysis, the resistance characteristics of the designed hull form are predicted.
