In order to trace the lateral post-buckling behaviors of thin-wafled space frames, a geometrically nonlinear finite element formulation is presented by applying incremental equilibrium equations based on the updated Lagrangian formulation and introducing Vlasov's assumption. The improved displacement field for symmetric thin-walled cross sections is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations, and the potential energy corresponding to the semitangential rotations and moments is consistently derived. For finite element analysis, tangent stiffness matrices of the thinwalled space frame element with 7 degrees of freedom including the restrained warping for each node are derived by using the Hermition polynomials as shape functions. A co-rotational formulation in order to evaluate the unbalanced loads is presented by separating the rigid body rotations and pure deformations from incremental displacements and evaluating the updated direction cosines of the frame element due to rigid body rotations and incremental member forces from pure deformations. Finite element solutions for the spatial buckling and post-buckling analysis of thin-walled space frames are presented and compared with available solutions and other researcher's results.

For stability design and P-${\Delta}$ analysis of steel frames with semi-rigid connections, the explicit form of the exact tangential stiffness matrix of a generalized semi-rigid frame element having rotational and translational connections is firstly derived using the stability functions. And its elastic and geometric stiffness matrix is consistently obtained by Taylor series expansion. Next depending on connection types of semi-rigidity, the corresponding tangential stiffness matrices are degenerated based on penalty method and static condensation technique. And then numerical procedures for determination of effective buckling lengths of generalized semi-rigid frames members and P-${\Delta}$ and shortly addressed. Finally three numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method. Particularly the minimum braced frames and coupled buckling modes of the corresponding frames are investigated.
In this paper, the non-linear time-dependent closed-form, discrete and combined solutions for the post-elastic response of a geometrically and physically non-linear suspended cable to a uniformly distributed load considering the creep effects, are presented. The time-dependent closed-form method for the particularly straightforward determination of a vertical uniformly distributed load applied over the entire span of a cable and the accompanying deflection at time t corresponding to the elastic limit and/or to the elastic region, post-elastic and failure range of a suspended cable is described. The actual stress-strain properties of steel cables as well as creep of cables and their rheological characteristics are considered. In this solution, applying the Irvine's theory, the direct use of experimental data, such as the actual stress-strain and strain-time properties of high-strength steel cables, is implemented. The results obtained by the closed-form solution, i.e., a load corresponding to the elastic limit, post-elastic and failure range at time t, enable the direct use in the discrete non-linear time-dependent post-elastic analysis of a suspended cable. This initial value of load is necessary for the non-linear time-dependent elastic and post-elastic discrete analysis, concerning incremental and iterative solution strategies with tangent modulus concept. At each time step, the suspended cable is analyzed under the applied load and imposed deformations originated due to creep. This combined time-dependent approach, based on the closed-form solution and on the FEM, allows a prediction of the required load that occurs in the post-elastic region. The application of the described methods and derived equations is illustrated by numerical examples.

This paper deals whth the buckling as well as postbuckling analysis of axisymmertric shells taking the initial deflection effects into account. Incremental equilibrium equations, based on the principle of virtual work, were derived by the finite element method, the successive step-by-step Newton-Raphson iterative technique was adopted. To define the transition pattern of postbuckling behavior from the prebuckling state more accurately, a simple solution method was developed, i.e. the critical load was calculated by the load extrapolation method with the determinant of tangent stiffness matrix and the equilibrium configuration in the immediate postbuckling stage was obtained by perturbation scheme and eigenvalue analysis. Degenerated isoparametric shell elements were used to analyse the axisymmetric shell of revolution. And by the method developed in this paper, the computer program applicable to the nonlinear analysis of both thin and moderately thick shells was constructed. To verify the capabilities and accuracies of the present solution method, the computed results were compared with the results of analytical solutions. These results coincided fairly well in both the small deflection and large deflection ranges. Various numerical analyses were done to show the effect of initial deflection and shape of shells on buckling load and postbuckling behavior. Futhermore, corrected directions of applied loads at every increment steps were used to determine the actual effects of large deflection in non-conservative load systems such as hydrostatic pressure load. The following conclusions can be obtained. (1) The method described in this paper was found to be both economic and effective in calculating buckling load and postbuckling behavior of shell structure. (2) Buckling and postbuckling behavior of spherical caps is critically dependent upon their geometric configuration, i.e. the shape of spherical cap and quantities of the initial deflection. (3) In the analysis of large deflection problems of shells by the incremental method, corrections of the applied load directions are needed at every incremental step to compensate the follower force effects.
Similar to the essential components of many mechanical systems, the geometrical properties of the teeth of spiral bevel gears greatly influence the kinematic and dynamic behaviors of mechanical systems. Logarithmic spiral bevel gears show a unique advantage in transmission due to their constant spiral angle property. However, a mathematical model suitable for accurate digital modeling, differential geometrical characteristics, and related contact analysis methods for tooth surfaces have not been deeply investigated, since such gears are not convenient in traditional cutting manufacturing in the gear industry. Accurate mathematical modeling of the tooth surface geometry for logarithmic spiral bevel gears is developed in this study, based on the basic gearing kinematics and spherical involute geometry along with the tangent planes geometry; actually, the tooth surface is a parametric surface defined on a parallelogrammic domain. Equivalence proof of the tooth surface geometry is then given in order to greatly simplify the mathematical model. As major factors affecting the lubrication, surface fatigue, contact stress, wear, and manufacturability of gear teeth, the differential geometrical characteristics of the tooth surface are summarized using classical fundamental forms. By using the geometrical properties mentioned, manufacturability (and its limitation in logarithmic spiral bevel gears) is analyzed using precision forging and multiaxis freeform milling, rather than classical cradle-type machine tool based milling or hobbing. Geometry and manufacturability analysis results show that logarithmic spiral gears have many application advantages, but many urgent issues such as contact tooth analysis for precision plastic forming and multiaxis freeform milling also need to be solved in a further study.
In standard finite element algorithms, the local stability conditions are not accounted for in the formulation of the tangent stiffness matrix. As a result, the loss of the local stability is not adequately related to the onset of the global instability. The phenomenon typically arises with material-type localizations, such as shear bands and plastic hinges. This paper addresses the problem in the context of the planar, finite-strain, rate-independent, materially non-linear beam theory, although the proposed technology is in principle not limited to beam structures. A weak formulation of Reissner's finite-strain beam theory is first presented, where the pseudocurvature of the deformed axis is the only unknown function. We further derive the local stability conditions for the large deformation case, and suggest various possible combinations of the interpolation and numerical integration schemes that trigger the simultaneous loss of the local and global instabilities of a statically determined beam. For practical applications, we advice on a procedure that uses a special numerical integration rule, where interpolation nodes and integration points are equal in number, but not in locations, except for the point of the local instability, where the interpolation node and the integration point coalesce. Provided that the point of instability is an end-point of the beam-a condition often met in engineering practice-the procedure simplifies substantially; one of such algorithms uses the combination of the Lagrangian interpolation and Lobatto's integration. The present paper uses the Galerkin finite element discretization, but a conceptually similar technology could be extended to other discretization methods.
The rheological properties of poly (acrylonitrile) (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) blend solutions in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) were investigated in terms of temperature and blend composition. The solutions exhibited a very characteristic rheological behavior with variation of temperature. 8 wt% solution showed an increase of viscosity and a decrease of loss tangent as temperature was increased over the temperature range of 20 and $60^{\circ}C$. At $20^{\circ}C$ the physical properties of the solutions exhibited dependence on the blend composition. At 40 and $60^{\circ}C$, however, the effects of blend ratio on the physical properties notably diminished. The longer relaxation time at higher temperature indicated that the formation of physical structures resulting from intermolecular interactions was promoted with increasing temperature. The odd rheological responses were further elucidated by measuring of the physical properties of dilute solutions. The intrinsic viscosity of the solutions suggested that the coiled chain dimension was reduced with increasing temperature.
The resonant frequency fo and unloaded quality factor Qu of CoTi-substituted Barium ferrites($\textrm{BaCo}_{x}\textrm{Ti}_{x}\textrm{Fe}_{12-2x}\textrm{O}_{19}$, $1.0\leq\textrm{x}\leq5.0$) were measured at frequencies between 5 to 10GHz using the paralleled copper-plate wave guide method. The measurements showed that the permittivities of CoTi-substituted Barium ferrites(CoTi-BF) increased from 14.7 to 23.4 with the contents of CoTi, x, and the loss tangents had values of $\textrm{10}^{-3}$ order. From these results, CoTi-BF are considered to be very promising materials in microwave devices such as dielctric resonator antennas.
Concrete contains numerous microcracks at initially poured. The growth and propagation of
nicrockacsk are believed tc finally incur the faiure of concrete. These processings are understood
as a damage. Damage IS represented as a second-order tensor and crack is treated as a con
tinuum phenomenon. In this paper, damage is characterized through the effective stress concept
together with the hypothesis of elastic energy equivalence, and damage evolution law and
constitutive equation of a damage model are derived by using the Helmholtz frte eriergy and the
dissipation potential by means of the thermodynamic principles. The constitutive equation of the
model includes the effects of elasticity, anisotropic damage and plasticity of concrete. There are
two effective tangent stiffness tensors in this model : one is for elastic-darnage and the other for
plastic damage. For the verification of the model, finite element analysis was performed for the
analysis of concrete subjec:t to uniaxial and biaxial loading and the results obtained were
compared with test results.

The existing CCTV has limitation such as problem on usage of the off-line type of recorded image for specific investigation, and requirement on interactive operator intervention for real-time surveillance. Therefore, it is required to develop the intelligent CCTV equipped with various functionalities in order to overcome drawbacks mentioned above. In this paper, implementation methods of image-based virtual fence were proposed by using the spline curves with supplied control for setup of surveillance area. In addition, pre-alarm region within the predefined distance was established with tangent and normal lines extracted from control points. The image-based virtual fence can be used for remote detection of intrusion and provision of real-time intrusion alarm, and can be expected to use in safety-related application areas including security and crime prevention.
