  • This paper briefly introduces silicon based thin film solar cells: amorphous (a-Si:H), microcrystalline ${\mu}c-Si:H$ single junction and $a-Si:H/{\mu}c-Si:H$ tandem solar cells. The major difference of a-Si:H and ${\mu}c-Si:H$ cells comes from electro-optical properties of intrinsic Si-films (active layer) that absorb incident photon and generate electron-hole pairs. The a-Si:H film has energy band-gap (Eg) of 1.7-1.8eV and solar cells incorporating this wide Eg a-Si:H material as active layer commonly give high voltage and low current, when illuminated, compared to ${\mu}c-Si:H$ solar cells that employ low Eg (1.1eV) material. This Eg difference of two materials make possible tandem configuration in order to effectively use incident photon energy. The $a-Si:H/{\mu}c-Si:H$ tandem solar cells, therefore, have a great potential for low cost photovoltaic device by its various advantages such as low material cost by thin-film structure on low cost substrate instead of expensive c-Si wafer and high conversion efficiency by tandem structure. In this paper, the structure, process and operation properties of Si-based thin-film solar cells are discussed.

  • In this study, the characteristics of the current and wind forces acting on two floating bodies were numerically investigated using a commercial CFD software, STAR-CCM+. In the numerical analyses, LNGC was located right behind FSRU under uniform current or wind conditions. Steady calculations were carried out using a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver and the realized k-epsilon model. First, the current coefficients of FSRU based only the CFD were compared with the model test data. Through this comparison, the present numerical models and mesh systems were indirectly verified. Next, computations for FSRU and LNGC in a uniform current were performed using different relative positions. It was found that the current coefficients were great affected by the longitudinal positions. Finally, the wind forces acting on FSRU and LNGC in tandem configurations were studied. The focus was on the shielding effects due to the aerodynamic interactions between FSRU and LNGC.

  • Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the mechanism for force generation of an insect with tandem wing configuration. Various stroke amplitudes, stroke plane angles and phase difference between the fore- and hind-wings are considered. The Reynolds number is 150 based on the chord length and maximum translation velocity of the wing. When an insect requires high lift such as takeoff, it flaps its wings in parallel at a lower stroke plane angle and a bigger stroke amplitude than those in the hovering. With wings in counter-stroke, the lift fluctuations decrease, and moreover mean lift force decreases. Interactions among the fore-wing, hind-wing and vortices are examined to explain the force variations

  • This study suggests a procedure for designing cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) which are combined with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) using a tandem configuration. So far most of the previous studies have dealt with conventional design problems not considering the layout and the characteristics of transporters used in CMS. A mathematical model is developed using the service time to perform material transfers as a suitable meassure. The service capacity of AGVs and space limitations are also reflected in this model. As the model can be shown strongly NP-hard, a heuristic algorithm is presented, in which each cell is temporarily formed using both the set covering model and similarity coefficients, and then locations of the cells are determined by means of tabu search and finally machine perturbations are carried out. An example problem is solved to demonstrate the algorithm developed.

  • Vaporization, ignition and combustion of fuel droplets in tandem array are theoretically investigated to understand the droplet interactions in combustors. Including the effects of density variation in gas-phase, internal circulation and transient liquid heating, a numerical studies are performed by changing parameters such as initial droplet temperatures, initial droplet spacings, initial Reynolds numbers, surrounding gas temperatures, and activation energies of fuel vapors. Combustion regime maps classify the droplet combustion phenomena according to the configuration and location of the flame with respect to injection Reynolds numbers and surrounding gas temperatures. In addition, it is shown that the dynamic histories of droplets and ignition delay times are dependent on droplet size ratios and initial spacings of tandem droplets.

  • Advances in white OLED tandem architecture are discussed. With these structures, stable and low-power full color AMOLED displays can be fabricated that are anticipated to be suitable for large area applications such as TVs. With a tandem architecture, efficient (24 cd/A) OLED structures with exceptional stability (${\sim}100,000\;h$ at $1000\;cd/m^2$) are described. In addition, excellent color gamut (>100% NTSC) can be attained by incorporating advanced color filters into the AMOLED backplane in a typical bottom-emitting configuration.

  • A tandem AGV system is based on partitioning all the stations into non-overlapping single vehicle closed loops with additional stations provided as an interface between adjacent loops. For an efficient use of this configuration, it is required to solve the load routing problem(LRP), which is primarily based on the fact that a load may be handled by several vehicles and moved through several loops before it reaches its destination. In this paper, a heuristic based on genetic algorithm(GA) is first developed to solve LRP. The first model obtains the optimal route of each job and the optimal direction of each loop when the vehicle in each loop travels unidirectionally. The second GA model obtaines the optimal polling sequence of the empty vehicle in each loop, when the vehicle can move bidirectionally.

  • The performance of a centrifugal compressor composed of an impeller, tandem diffuser rows and axial guide vanes has been predicted numerically and compared with available experimental results on its design rotational speed. The pitchwise-averaged mixing plane method was employed for the boundaries between rotor and stator to obtain steady state solutions. The overall characteristics showed difference according to the relative positions of tandem diffuser rows while the characteristics of impeller showed almost identical result. The numerical results agree with the measured data in respect of their tendency. It turned out that $0\%$ of relative positions is the worst case in terms of static pressure recovery and efficiency. According to the experimental results, some pressure fluctuations and malfunction of the compressor were observed for $75\%$ case. However, this numerical calculation using mixing plane method did not capture any of those phenomena. Thus, unsteady flow calculation should be performed to investigate the stability of the compressor caused by different diffuser configuration.

  • In this paper, aerodynamic noise simulation was conducted using DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) and FW-H (Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings) acoustic analogy for the tandem cylinders which have configuration similar to a landing gear of airplanes. Numerical simulation for the tandem cylinders whose centers are 3.7D apart was carried out and results were compared with the measured data such as flow characteristics, pressure coefficients on the cylinder surfaces and far-field noise characteristics. It was confirmed that periodically shedded vortices released at the upstream cylinder and impinged on the downstream cylinder surface are major sources of aerodynamic noise. After verifying the computational method of using DES and FW-H acoustic analogy for predicting aerodynamic noise of tandem cylinders, additional simulation was conducted to examine the effect of attaching a splitter plate at the rear of the upstream cylinder. It was confirmed that the noise level in specific frequency band decreased significantly because the splitter plate changed the vortex shedding features and reduced dipole noise source.

  • This paper summarizes the results of the investigations performed by the authors for a number of years on the performance of oil fences in currents and waves. The leakage inception velocity of currents, the wave-exciting motion of fences and the deformation of the fence skirt due to currents are investigated. The results show that improvement of the fence performance is necessary in order to utilize the oil fences as an effective containing device for spilt oils in ocean environments. As an approach toward improving the fence effectiveness, tandem fences in currents are investigated. It was found that an appropriate deployment of tandem fences of identical configuration could significantly improve the oil containment capability.
