  • This study was carried out to investigate the liquefaction behaviour of saturated silty sand under monotonic loading conditions. The undrained soil tests were conducted using a modified triaxial cell and specimens were prepared using the moisture tamping method. Undrained triaxial compression tests were performed at different confining pressures, void ratios and overconsolidation ratios and the samples were sheared to axial strains of about 20% to obtain monotonic loading conditions. It is shown that increasing confining pressures, void ratios and overconsoildation ratios increases the deviator stress, but it has no effect on increasing the dilatant tendencies. It is shown that complete static liquefaction was observed regardless of increases in the confining pressure, void ratio and overconsolidation ratio. Therefore, the confining pressure, void ratio and overconsoildation ratio does not provide significant effects on the liquefaction resistance of the silty sand. The presence of fines in the soil was shown to greatly increase the potential for static liquefaction and creates a particle structure with high compressibility for all cases.

  • According to continuous welded rails on a bridge, temperature changes bring about the expansion of the bridge deck, adding axial forces on the track. Moreover, the ballast on the bridge deck expansion joint is moved due to the bridge deck. The longer the bridge deck is, the greater the influence will be, loosening the ballast, causing track irregularities, and deteriorating passenger comfort. Considering the structure of the bridge itself and tolerance for track irregularities caused by the loosened ballast on the bridge, the maximum length of the deck should be less than 80 m, which is the same as the standard of French railways. In this study, the interaction between the expansion related to the bridge length and the irregularity in the longitudinal level, referring to measurements and maintenance work performed in high-speed railways, was analyzed. This research shows that the installation of a sliding plate or a vertical ballast stopper is not a good option, since it is difficult. On the other hand, the installation of a ZLR fastener or gluing is easy, but its influence is insignificant. In conclusion, switch tie tamping or manual tamping is more effective than other methods of what?

  • The compaction of core zone of the fill dam is very important foe increasing of the Strength of soil mass and reduction of permeability of the core. The principal objects of this study are to give the construction criteria of tamping rollers and to find out the relationships between density and permeability of soil after compaction. The results in this study are summarized as follows. 1. The core zone of fill dam should be compacted more than 8 passed because the compaction effects of clayey soil increase sharply in about 8 passes of roller. 2. The coefficient of permeability (K) increases with the thickness of compaction of soil even though the density is same. 3. The effect of compaction increases with the quantity of coarse materials such as coarse sand and gravel. 4. If D values change from 100 percent to 98 percent and from 100 percent to 95 percent, K values become 2 times and 5 times of initial K value respectively. 5. The coefficient of permeability in the field soil is very high comparing with the result of laboratory test at the same 100 percent compaction ratio, but differences between both results decrease with the decrease of compaction ratio. 6. Thickness of soil layer for the compaction should be increased for heavier compaction machine. 7. In order to get the compaction ratio of 98 percent or more, 10 to 12 passes of roller is generally required with the thickness of soil from 20cm to 30cm.

  • The effects of parameters related to the finite element simulation of the laser shock peening(LSP) process on the residual stresses of Inconel alloy 600 steel are discussed. In particular, we focus on the maximum pressure, pressure pulse duration, laser spot size, and number of shots. It is found that certain ranges of the maximum pressure and pulse duration can produce the maximum compressive residual stresses near the surface, and thus proper choices of these parameters are important. The residual stresses are not affected by the laser spot size, provided it is larger than a certain size. The magnitudes of the compressive residual stresses and the plastically affected depths are found to increase with an increasing number of shots, but this effect is less pronounced for more shots.
