Gravity Survey of the Subsurface Geology and Geologic Structure between Samcheog and Taebaek Area (중력탐사에 의한 삼척-태백간의 지하지질 및 지질구조 연구)

  • The gravity measurment has been carried out at 48 gravity stations with intervals of 1.0~1.5 km along the survey line between Samcheog, Gosari and Taebaek to study subsurface geology and geologic structure in the northeastern part of the Ockchon zone. The Bouguer gravity anomaly values were obtained from the measured gravity values through the gravity corrections. The subsurface geology and geologic structure were interpreted quantitatively by means of the Fourier series method and Talwani method for 2.5 dimensional body. In the study area, the depth of Conrad discontinuity is about 10 km at Samcheog, northeastern end of the survey line, and it is increased rapidly to about 12.5 km at Miro, 15 km at Gosari and 15.5 km at Dongjeom, southwestern end of the survey line, respectively. The depth of the basement of the Ockchon zone exposed at Samcheog is increased smoothly to about 2 km at 5 km from Samcheog along the survey line, and is exposed again in the area between Singiry and Gosari. Beyond Gosari its depth is increased to about 1.7 km, and displaced 2.3 km downward by Osipcheon fault near Dogyeri and 0.5 km by Baeksan thrust near Cheolam, respectively. Many V-shaped low Bouguer gravity anomalies resulted from the fracture zone associated with faults imply the existence of Osipcheon fault and several inferred faults. The low Bouguer gravity anomaly zone between Tongdong and Dongjeom is caused by Jurassic gneissose granite. A local high Bouguer gravity anomaly at 35 km along the survey line from Samcheog is interpreted by the effect of iron deposit of high density existed at subsurface. The thickness of Great Limestone Group varies from 0.5 km to 1.4 km, that of Pyeongan Supergroup from 0.4 km to 0.9 km, and that of Yangdeog Group is about 0.3 km. The thickness of Jurassic gneissose granite varies from 1.5 to 3.0 km.

WRF Sensitivity Experiments on the Choice of Land Cover Data for an Event of Sea Breeze Over the Yeongdong Region (영동 지역 해풍 사례를 대상으로 수행한 지면 피복 자료에 따른 WRF 모델의 민감도 분석)

  • This research focuses on the sensitivity of the WRF(Weather Research and Forecasting) Model according to three different land cover data(USGS(United States Geological Survey), MODIS(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)30s+USGS, and KLC (Korea Land Cover)) for an event of sea breeze, occurred over the Gangwon Yeongdong region on 13 May 2009. Based on the observation, the easterly into Gangneung, due to the sea-breeze circulation, was identified between 1000 LST and 1640 LST. It did not reach beyond the Taebaek Mountain Range and thus the easterly was not observed near Daegwallyeong. On the other hand, the numerical simulations utilizing land cover data of USGS, MODIS30s+USGS, and KLC showed easterlies beyond the Taebaek Mountain Range up to Daegwallyeong. In addition, rather different penetration distances of each easterly, and different timings of beginning and ending of sea breeze were identified among the simulations. The Bias, MAE(Mean Absolute Error) and RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) of the wind from WRF simulation using MODIS30s+USGS land cover data were the least among the simulations particularly over Gangwon Yeongdong coastal area(Sokcho, Gangneung and Donghae), while those of the wind over the Gangwon Mountain area(Daegwallyeong and Jinbu) from the simulation using KLC land cover data were the least among them. The wind field over Gangwon Yeongdong coastal area from the simulation using USGS land cover data was rather poor among them.

  • Taebaek city is located in the mountainous plateau area therefore the major industry was coal industry. According to dramatically declining of the major industry, Taebaek city is need to alternative industry which associated with considering the geographical characteristics of natural tourism resources for increasing the local economy. On the basis of these reasons, this study can be suggested ecological planning and mitigation of deterioration technique about the these study site. That is the reserved area for mountainous experience theme park. As the results of environmental ecology assessment are following as; The natural ecosystem areas, multi-layer structure forest such as forest of Pinus densiflora, forest of Quercus mongolica and deciduous forest have a high value of nature, diversity and potential. In addition, wild bird habitats were important area as a inhabitation, breeding, feeding and hiding. Therefore, on these areas should be preserved. Also, it needs to conserve on there such as more than three types of wild bird inhabitate areas, the fringe of high biological diversity, the wetland that have got good vegetation condition and the function of amphibia, reptiles crossing. In addition, inhabitation, the waterway of wetland form that have got wide waterside width needs to conserve. In conclusion, on the basis of analysis results such as conditions of plan, environment, ecological assessments, survey informations are able to suggest the connectivity of the axis of forest and management plan. Moreover, in the part of forest restoration plan, we suggest the plan of transplant for a compensation of damaged forest by land use.

Lapse Rate of Air Temperature and Optimizing Rice Cultivation Period in the Taebaek Mountainous Area (태백(太白) 산간지방(山間地方)에서의 기온체감율(氣溫遞減率)과 수도(水稻) 안전작기설정(安全作期設定))

  • The lapse rate of air temperature with respect to the elevation in the Taebaek Mountainous area was calculated and its application to recommendation for the safe cropping period in rice cultivation was attempted. The data for three sites of elevations at 300, 540 and 832-m above sea level were collected from the Regional Rural Guidance Office of Pyungchang Gun. The lapse rate ranged from $0.53^{\circ}C$ per 100-m elevation on January to $1.02^{\circ}C$ on March with average of $0.69^{\circ}C$. The estimated period of possible rice cropping decreased by the rate of 7 to 8 days per 100-m elevation. The rice variety requiring the cumulative temperature of $1800^{\circ}C$ such as Taeback-byo in Jinbu area could be cultivated below 300-m of altitude under the Taebaek Mountainous climatic condition. The variety requiring the cumulative temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ such as Songjeon-byo could be adaptable up to the 500-m altitude for safe cultivation.

Conodont Biostratigraphy of the Middle Carboniferous System in the Taebaek Area, Kangwondo, Korea (강원도 태백 지역의 중부 석탄계 코노돈트 생층서)

  • The Middle Carboniferous Manhang and Geumcheon Formations exposed in the Taebaek area, Kangwondo, Korea consist of sandstones and shales with some intercalation of limestone beds. The limestones of the formations contain abundant conodonts and other fossils. The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate the conodont fauna, (2) to assign conodont biozones of the Manhang and Geumcheon Formations, and (3) to refine their geologic age more exactly. The conodonts of the Manhang and Geumcheon Formations are 6 genera distributed into 11 species. Conodonts found from limestones of the Manhang Formation are Idiognathodus delicatus, Hindeodus minutus, Streptognathodus sp., Diplognathodus coloradoensis, N. bothorops, and N. medexultimus. This conodont fauna can be assigned to the Neognathodus bothrops Zone. This conodont biozone indicates that the geologic age of the Manghang Formation is the Atokan stage of the Middle Carboniferous Period. Conodonts came from limestones of the Geumcheon Formation are Idiognathodus delicatus, N. medexultimus, N. roundyi, N. dilatus, Diplognathodus edentulus, Hindeodus minutus, Streptognathodus elegantulus, and Gondolella bella. These conodonts permit them to be assigned to the Neognathodus roundyi Zone. This Conodont biozone indicates that the geologic age of the Geumcheon Formation is the Desmoinesian stage of the Middle Carboniferous Period.

  • Taebaeg-Hajang area, in the northern part of Taebaeg city, comprises of Paleozoic sedimentary sequences and Cretaceous intrusive and volcanoclastic rocks. The rocks in the area are affected by folding and thrusting during the Bulgugsa Orogeny. In Taebaeg area, geologic structures related with thrust movement are dominant. These structures are small scale of klippe and window, back thrust, and asymmetric folds related with blind thrust. Tear fault or compartment fault due to differential movement of thrust sheets have "en echelon" arrays. Small scale transpression effects occurred along these faults and produced the flower structure. According to strain measurement using by ooids from limestone and quartz grains from quartzite, strain ratios are very low and strain ellipsoids are apparent oblate type.

  • The traditional farm houses in Yongdong area of Kangwon province have a different spatial structure from those of the other areas because of the characteristics of the climatic, geographic and sociocultural circumstances between the Taebaek mountains and the East Sea. So the purpose of this study is aimed at grasping how the spatial features of traditional farm houses in Yongdong area have been different in each regional circle. The plans of traditional farm houses of this region which are four types - ㅡ typed house without floor, ㅡ typed house with floor, ㄱ typed house without floor, ㄱ typed house with floor - show very similar but different space arrangements.

  • Univariate and multivariate analyses of morphometric characters were performed with samples of striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius coreae Thomas, collected from Mt. Taebaek area, Mt. Wolak area, Mt. Palgong area, and Chongju area. It was confirmed that the samples of A. agrarius coreae were similar with one another to be grouped into a single subspecies. Moreover, clinal variation related with the altitude of localities where samples were collected was revealed in the first axis resulted from discriminant analysis and in the length of tail vertebrae.

Classification of Calcicoles and Calcifuges in Mt. Jabyeong (자병산 일대의 호석회 및 혐석회식물의 분류)

  • Mt. Jabyeong(872.5m), limestone region in the Taebaek mountains, located in 37° 32'N, 129° 25'E and in Sangye-ri, Okgye-myeon, Gangreung-si and Samok-ri, Imgye-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. The purposes of this study were to investigate the floristic composition from 1997 to 1998 in Mt. Jabyeong and report the distribution of Korean endemic plants, rare and vulnerable plants, calcicoles and calci fuges, The vascular plants in this area were composed of 93 families, 313 genera, 3 subspecies, 57 varieties, 13 forms, 495 species, totaling 568 taxa. Among the vascular plants, 21 taxa were Korean endemic plants and 7 taxa were rare and vulnerable plants. Calcicole and calcifuge plants in this study area were composed of 21 families, 30 genera, 36 species and 14 families, 15 genera, 17 species. The soil pH values of study site in Mt. chabyoung were ranging 7.4∼8, which showed that this site was a mostly limestone area with alkaline soil. And soil depth was formed to a relative thin layer, mostly 2~4cm thickness. This site showed high content of moisture and organic matter which were ranging 40-45% and 15-25%, respectively.
