  • In an information-oriented society, visually impaired persons also should obtain the information with relative ease. They tend to receive the information of letters by tactile sensation through braille display systems. Several types of braille display systems have been suggested so far, but none of them have been widely used yet. The braille display system should provide multiple lines of braille units to improve the level of understanding. In this paper, we propose a cell type braille unit with $3{\times}2$ dots, each of which consists of a piezoelectric linear motor. A braille cell is small and lightweight enough to be portable, and it can be easily assembled in multiple lines. The preliminary tests using the proposed braille display system show that it can provide the information that can be well perceived by visually impaired persons.

  • With rapid development in ultra fast communication and digital multimedia, the realistic broadcasting technology, that can stimulate five human senses beyond the conventional audio-visual service is emerging as a new generation broadcasting technology. In this paper, we introduce a haptic broadcasting system and related core system and component techniques by which we can 'touch and feel' objects in an audio-visual scene. The system is composed of haptic media acquisition and creation, contents authoring, in the haptic broadcasting, the haptic media can be 3-D geometry, dynamic properties, haptic surface properties, movement, tactile information to enable active touch and manipulation and passive movement following and tactile effects. In the proposed system, active haptic exploration and manipulation of a 3-D mesh, active haptic exploration of depth video, passive kinesthetic interaction, and passive tactile interaction can be provided as potential haptic interaction scenarios and a home shopping, a movie with tactile effects, and conducting education scenarios are produced to show the feasibility of the proposed system.

  • In pulse diagnosis, the indentation pressure is one of the most important factors as well as the change of pulse shape and the distribution of pressure via time. But, on the oriental medical doctor's indentation pressure control, the understandings of the neurophysiological meanings and mechanisms have been lacked. So, in this paper, we considered on these issues and then proposed a proper system which can imitate the OMD's indentation pressure control mechanisms. As a result, both tactile information and kinesthetic information were found to be essential to the indentation pressure control so that a system, which can measure both the physical indent pressure and the displacement of an indentation arm, has been proposed. With this proposed system, while the indentation was being controlled through the moving step number of the step motor, the physical indentation pres sure and displacement of the indentation arm were measured. From these measured data, the relationships between the moving step number and both physical indentation pressure and displacement were revealed to have linear characteristics in early phase and to have nonlinear characteristics in latter phase. Additionally, three types of graph were generated whose X axis means the moving step number, the physical indentation pressure and the displacement respectively and Y axis means the pulse pressure. By comparing these graphs, we come to conclude that different concepts on indentation pressure control cause different diagnostic results on floating/sinking degrees for the same subject. Consequently, an indentation system for the pulse diagnosis should be able to provide both the tactile information and kinesthetic information, that is, the physical indentation pressure and the displacement of the indentation arm. In future, the proposed system should be optimized to the pulse diagnosis environment and how to combine the both information for more reliable diagnosis should be studied.

  • In this paper, We have developed the Internet web browser for the blind and visually impaired person. The Internet Web browser system consists of personal computer connected to Internet, braille display, voice synthesis devices for character information, tactile display for the representation of web image and braille printer for web page printing. We convert character in the web page to braille and print it to braille display. The image in the web page is printed with tactile display actuated by solenoid. The blind can acess the Internet web site with this web browser system and understand the Internet information.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the thermophisiological responses and subjective wearing comfort for the six lining fabrics of one-piece dress in summer environment. There were significant differences in the microclimate, the mean skin temperature and the subjective wear comfort for the lining fabrics. The mean skin temperature of rayon and acetate were lower than that of synthetic fiber. The wearing comfort of rayon and acetate were better than that of synthetic fiber. There were clear correlations between the mechanical properties and the subjective wear comfort of lining fabrics. The hygroscopicity and density of textile affected the humidity and tactile sensation of dress, and they were important factors determining the wearing comfort of one-piece dress.

  • This study was performed to develop face towel fabrics that reflect consumer's tactile preferences. Three different kinds of pile fiber (100% cotton, 50% cotton/50% bamboo, 100% bamboo) of the towel fabrics were selected for the test. The towels were laundered one, five and 10 times repeatedly in a normal washing condition, and fabric softeners were applied to the towels that were laundered 10 times. The flexibility and absorbency (absorption rate and water absorptivity) were evaluated by laundering times of the face towels. Male and female university students evaluated their subjective sensations of the face towels. The flexibility of towel fabrics showed no significant difference according to type of pile fiber or laundering time. The absorbency of the towels was significantly different according to the type of pile fiber and laundering time. The absorption rate was higher in 100% bamboo fiber, and water absorptivity was higher for cotton fibers. There were no significant differences in subjective sensation according to the type of pile fiber of towels before laundering. As the frequency of laundering increased, the tactile preference for the towel slightly decreased. The 100% bamboo towel was rated the most comfortable among the three kinds of towels. The tactile preference for the towels was influenced by smoothness, fabric softness, and softener treatment, in that order.

  • This paper proposes both a novel tactile human-computer interface method and an improved algorithm for the wearable PC. Under the condition of Ubiquitous computing, the next generation PC aims at effective representation and integration of colors, brightness of light. sound, odor, taste and feelings. Also, it aims at human being centered man-machine interface. In spite of various functions of the wearable PC, for the convenience of possessing, hardware platform for the wearable PC should be small-sized and light weighted one. The main problems of making small sized PC are user interfaces, like keyboard, monitor and so on. The traditional user interfaces have critical limitations for reducing their size. In this paper, we propose a novel user input method and improved algorithm to constructing small sized, light weighted and wearable PC. And, we verify the effectiveness of suggested method and algorithm compared to the traditional algorithm.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the subjective fabric hand of sleepwear fabrics, and to assist in developing sleepwear fabrics that offer maximum comfort in wearing sensation. In general, the respondents noted that sleepwear fabrics made with polyester had better tactile sensation than those made with cotton, while satin weave fabrics felt better than plain weave fabrics. As regards the difference in fabric hand according to gender, female students responded with more receptiveness and sensitivity than male students in the category of woven fabric evaluation. As regards the same textile materials, the evaluations of female students and male students differed in fabric hand descriptors, particularly for the evaluation on cotton fabrics. Male students responded that both plain weave fabrics and satin weave fabrics were stiff while female students replied that satin weave fabrics had better tactile sensation.
