  • This paper describes the development of real-time irrigation reservoir operation models that adequately allocate available water resources for paddy rice irrigation. Water requirement deficiency index(WRDI) was proposed as a guide to evaluate the operational performance of release schemes by comparing accumulated differences between daily release requirements for irrigated areas and actual release amounts. Seven reservoir release rules were developed, which are constant release rate method (CRR), mean storage curve method(MSC), frequency analysis method of reservoir storage rate(FAS), storage requirement curve method(SRC), constant optimal storage rate method (COS), ten-day optimal storage rate method(TOS), and release optimization method(ROM). Long-term forecasting reservoir operation model(LFROM) was formulated to find an optimal release scheme which minimizes WRDIs with long-term weather generation. Rainfall sequences, rainfall amount, and evaporation amount throughout the growing season were to be forecasted and the results used as an input for the model. And short-term forecasting reservoir operation model(SFROM) was developed to find an optimal release scheme which minimizes WRDIs with short-term weather forecasts. The model uses rainfall sequences forecasted by the weather service, and uses rainfall and evaporation amounts generated according to rainfall sequences.

  • In order to develop a new improved selective medium for the Bifidobacterium sp. from the human fecal samples, one hundred eight Bifidobacterium strains were isolated and identified. Sensitivity test for the antibiotics and antimetabolites and test for the specific substrate were performed to obtain basic data for the development of the Bifidobacterium selective medium. TOS(transgalactosylated oligosaccharide) was shown to be preferentially used by Bifidobacterium sp.. Sodium propionate promoted the growth of Bifidobacterium while inhibiting other intestinal bacteria. Upon these results, TP medium was designed and shown to be very effective for the selection of Bifidobacterium and better than Mitsuoka BS medium.

  • Mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) plays a major role in cell growth, proliferation, polarity, differentiation, development, and controls transitioning between anabolic and catabolic states of the cell. It collects almost all extracellular and intracellular signals from growth factors, nutrients, and maintains cellular homeostasis, and is involved in several pathological conditions including, neurodegeneration, Type 2 diabetes (T2D), obesity, and cancer. In this review, we summarize current knowledge of upstream signaling of mTORC1 to explain etiology of T2D and hypertriglyceridemia, in which state, the role of telomere attrition is explained. We discuss if chronic inhibition of mTORC1 can reverse adverse effects resulting from hyperactivation. In conclusion, we suggest the regulatory roles of telomerase (TERT) and hexokinase II (HKII) on mTORC1 as possible remedies to treat hyperactivation. The former inhibits mTORC1 under nutrient-rich while the latter under starved condition. We provide an idea of TOS (TOR signaling) motifs that can be used for regulation of mTORC1.

  • Recently the container volume in the global trade is steadily increasing. In an effort to cope with this trend, major ports of the world are stepping up the introduction of high-tech equipments, trying to establish a highly efficient information system, and improving the internal work processes of their container terminals. For speedy and effective cargo handling, they are making every effort in the diverse fields. The purpose of this study aims at developing an intelligent multi-agent system for the gate work of a container terminal, which is the place of authority transfer in a container terminal. The agent system suggested in this study has made a comparison between COPINO information by TOS (Terminal Operating System) and information on containers and trucks recognized at the gate passage, checking up their efficiency, and performing the function of controlling outside truck's input-output. Also, based on the records of outside truck's gate passage, some gates can be operated flexibly, consequently enhancing the efficiency of the gate function. The results of job performance will immediately be notified to the customers and terminal managers, thus helping them make decisions speedily.

  • At the end of 1999, the TeraCluster project in the KISTI Supercomputing Center was initiated to explore the possibility of PC clusters as a scientific computing platform to replace the Cray T3E system in KISTI by the year 2002. In order to understand whether an application is scalable to tera-flops sized cluster system, running test is inevitable. Extensive performance tests using well-known benchmarking codes with real applications' characteristics in them were carried out with different combinations of CPUs, system boards, network devices. The lessen learned shows the relationships between system performances and varied applications' different needs resulting in promises of How-Tos in building large scale cluster system. The 64/16 node clusters with Alpha EV6(466MHz), Pentium III(667 MHz) i inter-node network of Fast Ethernet. SCI[1] and Myrinet[2] were evaluated. More detailed specifications of the Linux clusters are described in Table 1.

  • We assessed whether the cow1 mutant defects are associated with growth of Tos17 and T-DNA insertional rice in blue light (BL). Growth of oscow1 mutants which encoded a member of the YUCCA protein family was retarded in BL. Root to shoot ratios of the mutants were reduced about 2 times lower in the absence of NAA and about 2.5 times lower in the presence of NAA; the shoot growth was not significantly changed by NAA addition. Photosynthetic activity of the mutants was however inhibited in high light. Pigment analysis showed significant difference between wild-type (Chl a:b = 3.02) and mutants (3.84). Carotenoid contents of the mutants were also decreased considerably, implying the involvement of cow1 in pigment formation. These findings lead us to suggest that the growth retardation of oscow1 mutant plants by BL results from the difference of photosynthetic activity in part.

  • For a wider application of laser direct patterning, selective laser ablation of indium tin oxide (ITO) film on transparent oxide semiconductor (TOS) thin film was carried out using a diode-pumped Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser at a wavelength of 1064 nm. In case of the laser ablation of ITO on indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) film, both of ITO and IGZO films were fully etched for all the conditions of the laser beams even though IGZO monolayer was not ablated at the same laser beam condition. On the contrary, in case of the laser ablation of ITO on zinc oxide (ZnO) film, it was possible to etch ITO selectively with a slight damage on ZnO layer. The selective laser ablation is expected to be due to the different coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between ITO and ZnO.

  • As a way to overcome the problems that when you transmit data to and receive data from End Device to participate in the GRID network, QoS has not been, GARA supports the Diffserv system basically. However, the problem when it is assumed settings related to the Diffserv between the ISP and the ISP is wrong with each other, that it is not possible to receive a complete QoS services began to appear. In this paper, we tried to overcome these drawbacks, in networks based GARA the (Globus Architecture for Reservation and Allocation), using the SLA (Service Level Agrement) server, was treated in the highest priority to the data, the ISP there is provided a method for setting the Diffserv the ISP is even wrong and, using the TOS of the IP header, to solve this, it is described about the direction of future research.

  • Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a haematological cancer characterized by clonal proliferation of plasma cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the activity of serum paraoxonase-1 (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE) in multiple myeloma with and without free light chain excretion(FLCe-MM and NFLCe-MM); as well as to investigate possible alterations in oxidative stress parameters. Materials and Methods: Total thiol (T.thl), oxidative stress index (OSI), total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were examined in addition to the PON1 and ARE enzyme activities in twenty one FLCe-MM and nineteen NFLCe-MM subjects. Routine parameters like lipid panel, serum total protein, albumin, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid and hemoglobin levels were compared with the oxidative stress markers. Results: Serum total protein, BUN, creatinin, and uric acid levels were significantly higher (p=0.04, p=0.001, p=0.001 and p=0.0022, respectively), while hemoglobin and albumin levels were significantly lower in FLCe-MM patients (p=0.009 and p=0.04,respectively). PON1 and ARE activities were significantly lower in patients with FLCe-MM compared to those with NFLCe-MM (p=0.001 and p=0.008, respectively). Conclusions: Depending on our results of prognostic markers of MM such as age, hemoglobin, albumin, and creatinine we feel confident to presume FLCe-MM as a subgroup with a worse prognosis. A decrease in PON1 and ARE activities may contribute to the prognosis and may be used as a prognostic tool in MM.
