  • Farming using natural salts for supply of nutrients to crops is increasing recently. It is necessary to evaluate the salt accumulation in soil and the effects on crop growth by treatment of natural salt. This study was conducted at the organic cultivation fields which garlics were planted. The treatments were no natural salts (control) and plots applied 100~600 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ with natural salts. Soil samples were taken from the 0 to 25 cm depth at 12 and 107 day (harvest time) after natural salts application. The results showed that electrical conductivity (EC), exchangeable Na (Exch.$-Na^+$) and Cl- were increased by application of natural salts. But, pH and exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$) had not significantly differences among treatments. In 300 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ plots of natural salt, the level of EC, Exch.$-Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ in top soil (0-5 cm) was were increased more 0.3, 3.7, and 12.7 times than control plot, respectively. EC, Exch.$-Na^+$, and $Cl^-$ were highest in the top 5 cm of soil and decreased with depth at 12 days after natural salts application, but were decreased in the plower layer (0-15cm) at the harvest time because they were leached with natural rain. An increasing the application level of natural salt resulted in increasing of sodium adsorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage, and percentage of soil dispersion. The concentration of nutrient uptake such as total nitrogen (T-N), chloride (Cl) in garlic had significant difference between control and plots applied with natural salts The content of T-N of garlic in plots with natural salt application was lower than control plot, but Cl is higher than control plot.

  • Red rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important weeds in most of rice cultivating area. Seed germination related experiments were done to evaluate germination percentage, emerging speed, and initial growth by seeding depth and soil moisture level. The four experiments, 1) temperature, 2) seeding depth, 3) soil moisture level, and 4) seeding position, were done with combination each other on phytotron for germination and seedling growth related experiments of redrice. The treatments levels were: 1) Temperatures were 20/15(Low), 25/20 (Mid.), $30/25{\circ}C$ (High), (day/night), 2) seeding depths were 0, 3, 6 cm, 3) soil moisture levels were 25, 35, 45, 55, 65% (VWC, %), and seeding position were furrow, ridge, ridge-top. The germination percentage and germination speed of red rice were higher and faster than Daeanbyeo in low temperature. Yoeongcheon redrice of seed germination percentage and seedling length was more vigor than Hapcheon red rice. Red rice was not germinated on 6 cm seeding depth until 11 days after seeding except high temperature treatment. Germination percentage increased with increasing soil water percentage in low temperature, however it was greatest in 45% in high soil moisture level between 25% to 65% in low temperature. Seed germination percentage and seedling length were not significantly different among the soil water level in mid- and high temperature levels. In conclusion, red rice could germinate in top soil (<6 cm) in mid- and high temperature range, so we might be control red rice by spraying herbicide after germination of red rice combined with delayed rotary cultivation.

  • Lateral earth Pressure distributions due to the ,randy soil backfill behind the rigid vertical walls for three different wall movement modes are obtained by the elasto-plastic finite element analys of soil deformation, and these earth pressures are compared with both Rankine's and Dubrova's active earth pressures. Thereby, the effects of the magnitude and the mode of wall displacement on the earth pressure distribution are investigated. Three different modes of wall movement considered in this study are the rotation about bottom, the rotation about top and the translation. For the case of the wall rotation about top, the earth pressure distribution is shown as a reverse S-curve-shaped distribution due to the arching effect. Consequently, the point of application of the lateral thrust is much higher than one-third of the wall height from the base. And, comparing the other modes of wall movement, the magnitude and the point of appliestion of the lateral thrust for the wall rotation about top are larger and higher, respectively. The wedge-shaped plastic zone in the backfill at active failure is developed only for the mode of wall rotation about bottom. The lateral earth pressure distributions on the walls with inclined backfill of several different slopes are shown for the mode of wall rotation about bottom.

  • Numerical analysis for the in-situ top base foundation (In-situ TBF) was carried out in order to investigate the effect of bearing capacity and the load delivering mechanisms in granular soil. The input data for the numerical model was prepared from the result obtained from the plate load test and full size in-situ TBF field tests. According to the result of numerical analysis, the behavior of in-situ TBF showed that bearing capacity of the foundation increased by $50{\sim}100%$ and settlement was reduced up to $1/2{\sim}1/3$ comparing to other types foundation. The effect of cone-shaped part of the in-situ TBF was as important as pile part for the improvement of foundation stability. The variation of the length of pile part indicated that the present length was proved satisfactory in terms of effectiveness.

  • The paper presents the analysis of two groups of piles subjected to lateral loads incorporating the non-linear behaviour of soil. The finite element method is adopted for carrying out the parametric study of the pile groups. The pile is idealized as a one dimensional beam element, the pile cap as two dimensional plate elements and the soil as non-linear elastic springs using the p-y curves developed by Georgiadis et al. (1992). Two groups of piles, embedded in a cohesive soil, involving two and three piles in series and parallel arrangement thereof are considered. The response of the pile groups is found to be significantly affected by the parameters such as the spacing between the piles, the number of piles in a group and the orientation of the lateral load. The non-linear response of the system is, further, compared with the one by Chore et al. (2012) obtained by the analysis of a system to the present one, except that the soil is assumed to be linear elastic. From the comparison, it is observed that the non-linearity of soil is found to increase the top displacement of the pile group in the range of 66.4%-145.6%, while decreasing the fixed moments in the range of 2% to 20% and the positive moments in the range of 54% to 57%.

  • A long-term leaching column experiment was performed to evaluate the teachability of the stabilized lead-contaminated soil using soluble phosphate. The study shows that Pb in the leachate was little detected and the remaining $PO_4-P$ concentration kept below 0.1 mg/L due to the formation of geochemically stable lead phosphate minerals from the reactions of labile soil Pb forms with the added soluble phosphate salt. After the experiment, there was no Pb migration from the top to the bottom of the stabilized soil column. But the Pb concentrations of the 12 soil samples from the control column decreased with the increase of the soil depth.

  • Foundation plays a significant role in safe and efficient turbo machinery operation. Turbo machineries generate harmonic load on the foundation due to their high speed rotating motion which causes vibration in the machinery, foundation and soil beneath the foundation. The problems caused by vibration get multiplied if the soil is poor. An improperly designed machine foundation increases the vibration and reduces machinery health leading to frequent maintenance. Hence it is very important to study the soil structure interaction and effect of machine vibration on the foundation during turbo machinery operation in the design stage itself. The present work studies the effect of harmonic load due to machine operation along with earthquake loading on the frame foundation for poor soil conditions. Various alternative foundations like rafts, barrette, batter pile and combinations of barrettes with batter pile are analyzed to study the improvements in the vibration patterns. Detailed computational analysis was carried out in SAP 2000 software; the numerical model was analyzed and compared with the shaking table experiment results. The numerical results are found to be closely matching with the experimental data which confirms the accuracy of the numerical model predictions. Both shake table and SAP 2000 results reveal that combination of barrette and batter piles with raft are best suitable for poor soil conditions because it reduces the displacement at top deck, bending moment and horizontal displacement of pile and thereby making the foundation more stable under seismic loading.
