  • TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) is a technology that processes TCP/IP on a network adapter instead of a host CPU to reduce protocol processing overhead from the host CPU. There have been some approaches to implementing TOE: software TOE based on an embedded processor; hardware TOE based on ASIC implementation; and hybrid TOE in which software and hardware functions are combined. In this paper, we designed software modules and hardware modules for a hybrid TOE on an FPGA that had two processor cores. Software modules are based on the embedded Linux. Hardware modules are for data transmission (TX) and reception (RX). One core controls the TX path and the other controls the RX path of the Linux. This TX/RX path separation mechanism can reduce task switching overheads between processes and overcome poor performance of single embedded processor. Hardware modules deal with creating headers for outgoing packets, processing headers of incoming packets, and fetching or storing data from or to the host memory by DMA. These can make it possible to improve the performance of data transmission and reception. We proved performance of the TOE with separated transmission and reception paths by performing experiments with a TOE network adapter that was equipped with the FPGA having processor cores.

  • Reconstruction of the distal portion of the great toe has always represented a difficult problem to surgeons. There are many methods of flap reconstruction described for foot defects, but none for tip of the great toe. We report a case of reconstruction of the great toe using a homodigital reverse pedicle island flap method. A 25-year-old man had a crushing injury at the distal phalanx of the left great toe. A homodigital reverse pedicle island flap was raised from the dorso-medial aspect of the proximal phalanx of the great toe based on the distal dorsal arcade. The flap covered the exposed distal phalanx and stump was closed without shortening. He made an uncomplicated recovery and when seen 6 months later he had a good cosmetic and functional result. A homodigital reverse pedicle island flap is described for the reconstruction of the distal part of the great toe. It involves only a single stage procedure with minimal donor site morbidity and provides a good cosmetic results.

  • This study examined the effects of trifoliate orange extract (TOE) on inflammatory reactions at the time of an LPS shock by performing experiments on rats injected with trifoliate orange extract and in Raw 264.7 cell cultures, with the aim of developing a new anti-inflammatory medicine. The IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α concentrations were lower in all of the groups treated with TOE than in the control group after 5 h of LPS treatment. The IL-10 concentration was higher in the 300-㎎/㎏ TOE group than in the control group after 2 h and 5 h of LPS treatment. The liver concentrations of cytokines IL-1β and IL-6 decreased more in the groups treated with TOE than in the control group and the IL-6 concentration did not differ significantly between the 100-㎎/㎏ TOE group than in the control group. The TNF-α and IL-10 concentrations did not differ significantly between the TOE groups and the control group. In the experiments involving Raw 264.7 macrophage cultures subjected to LPS shock, the productions of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α decreased in all of the groups treated with TOE compared to the control group. The IL-10 concentration did not differ significantly between the groups treated with TOE and the control group. Together the findings of this study suggest that TOE contains functional substances that can influence inflammatory reactions.

  • Purpose: The great toe presents a reconstructive challenge for plastic surgeons. The big toe has much importance not only for the gait and the stability, but also for appearance aspects. Few reports have documented the reconstruction of big toe defects and we report a unique case of free flap reconstruction technique. Methods: A 41-year-old man with right great toe open fracture with soft tissue necrosis was referred from the orthopedic surgery department. On physical examination, there was the skin necrosis circumferentially and the fratured bone was severely fragmented. The metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the big toe was intact. After the wound debridement, we harvested the innervated anterolateral thigh flap and transposed to the defected area. After five months, we finally retouched the flap by the dorsal defatting and distal debulking. Results: He had an uneventful postoperative course without infection, dehiscence and flap necrosis. He has remained asymptomatic for eight months without any recurrence such as the osteomyelitis. Finally, he kept the normal gait and posture with weight bearing on the reconstructed great toe and foot. Conclusion: The anterolateral thigh flap is described for the reconstruction of the great toe. It involves two stage procedure with the minimal donor site morbidity and provides a good cosmetic result.

  • In this paper, we propose a socket interface layer for large-scale multimedia servers that adopt TCP/IP Offload Engines (TOE). In order to provide legacy network applications with binary level compatibility, the socket interface layer intercepts all socket-related system calls to forward to either TOE or legacy TCP/IP Protocol stack. The layer is designed and implemented as a kernel module in Linux. The layer is located between BSD socket layer and INET socket layer, and passes the application's socket requests to INET socket layer or TOE. The layer provides multimedia servers and web servers with the following features: (1) All standard socket APIs and file I/O APIs that are supported (2) Support for binary level compatibility of existing socket programs (3) Support for TOE and legacy Ethernet NICs at the same time.

  • This study presents an estimate of on-site surface fuel loadings composed of coarse woody debris (CWD) using $5^{th}$ National Forest Inventory (NFI) data in South Korea. We classified CWD data into forest type, region and decay class, and used conversion factors by decay class and tonne of oil equivalent developed in the country. In 2010, the total wildfire fuel load of CWD was estimated as 8.9 million TOE; those of coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests were 3.5 million TOE, 2.8 million TOE and 2.6 million TOE, respectively. Gangwon Province had the highest wildfire fuel load of CWD (2.3 million TOE), whereas Seoul exhibited the lowest wildfire fuel load of CWD (0.02 million TOE). Wildfire fuel loads of CWD were estimated as 2.9 million TOE, 1.9 million TOE, 2.4 million TOE and 1.7 million TOE for decay classes I, II, III and IV, respectively. The total wildfire fuel load of CWD corresponded to the calorific value of 8.2 million tons crude oil, 2.46% of that of living trees. Proportionate to the growing stock, total wildfire fuel load of CWD was in a broad distinction by region, while its TOE $ha^{-1}$ was not. This implies that there is no need to establish different guidelines by region for management of CWD. The results of this work provide a baseline study for scientific policy guidelines on preventing wildfires by proposing CWD as wildfire fuel load.

  • Modern people are suffering from a lack of exercise along with their daily lives, and the foot's pedigree disease is increasing as a result, foot pedigree disease is also increasing. As a result, the design of socks is diversifying, and among them, the development of toe socks that help prevent and alleviate foot problems is also actively underway. Thus, this study conducted a study on toe socks design and summarized the concept of toe socks design through theoretical background. It also established tasks to be used for usability evaluation through case studies and prior research. An empirical study showed that the satisfaction of toe socks design was lower than that of ordinary socks, and that of toe socks design was more satisfactory in terms of usability. As a result, improvements in toe sock design have been derived, and it is expected that the hidden partitions between first toe sock can be supplemented, and toe sock design can be improved through similar color scheme and color diversification.

  • Background: In this study, the abductor hallucis activity and medial longitudinal arch angle were compared by performing four exercises, namely the short foot exercise, the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension, the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 1kt on the sole, and the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 2kg on the sole. Methods: Four short foot exercises as described above were performed by 20 healthy adult males and females. The abductor hallucis activity and medial longitudinal arch angle were measured and analyzed by surface electromyography and the Kinovea software program. Results: The short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension, short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 1kg on the sole, and the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 2kg on the sole showed significantly higher abductor hallucis activity than the short foot exercise alone. Among these, the short foot exercise with the 2nd~5th toe extension was the most effective. All exercises showed a significantly decreased medial longitudinal arch angle post-exercise than pre-exercise, and the short foot exercise with the 2nd~5th toe extension showed a significantly decreased medial longitudinal arch angle compared to the other three exercises. Conclusion: It is believed that the short foot exercise with the 2nd~5th toe extension can be proposed as an effective exercise that can replace the short foot exercise alone.

  • There are many different type of congenital toe anomalies such as syndactyly, polydactyly which are more common, and less frequently macrodactyly and curly toe. Congenital anomaly of hand can decrease the hand function and easy to be visualized, so the early treatment of anomaly is natural and recommended. On the other hand, Congenital anomaly of foot rarely decrease the foot function and was hidden in the shoe, so treatment of anomaly was delayed frequently. However, the surgery can be needed, as the foot getting grown-up, discomfort of shoe fitting or intractable plantar keratosis due to secondary deformation of foot can occur. A distinct feature and surgical consideration was compared with congenital anomaly of hand and it should be taken into account in the treatment of adult toe anomalies.
