  • The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate simple and multiple regression models for Total Organic Carbon (TOC) concentration estimation in stream flow. For development (using water quality data in 2012) and evaluation (using water quality data in 2011) of regression models, we used water quality data from downstream of Yeongsan river basin during 2011 and 2012, and correlation analysis between TOC and water quality parameters was conducted. The concentrations of TOC were positively correlated with Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), TN (Total Nitrogen), Water Temperature (WT) and Electric Conductivity (EC). From these results, simple and multiple regression models for TOC estimation were developed as follows : $TOC=0.5809{\times}BOD+3.1557$, $TOC=0.4365{\times}COD+1.3731$. As a result of the application evaluation of the developed regression models, the multiple regression model was found to estimate TOC better than simple regression models.

  • Total organic carbon(TOC) was introduced as the water quality index of the rivers and lakes in 2013. This paper evaluated factors affecting effluent TOC concentrations and treated and discharged loads of existing publicly owned treatment works(POTWs). For selected POTWs with greater treatment capacity than $500m^3/day$, factorial analysis was used to consider effects of kinds of biological treatment processes, inflow of other types of wastewater(industrial, livestock, landfill leachate wastewater, etc.) with domestic wastewater, sewer separation rate, and effluent discharging zones in which different effluent criteria applied. As a result, those factors did not show significant effect on effluent TOC concentration of POTWs in effluent discharging zone I and II. However, In effluent discharging zone III and IV, kinds of biological treatment processes, the inclusion of other waste in influent of domestic wastewater, and the sewer separation rate were significant factors. The treated TOC load in POTWs was also not affected significantly by the variables set in this study. On the other hand, those three factors influenced significantly on the TOC load discharged to water bodies. The sum of factorial effects and the contribution rate of three factors to the discharged TOC load was 60.23 and 41%, 59.57 and 41%, and 42.04 and 18%, respectively.

  • In order to evaluate the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), as indicators of organic matter in the coastal environments, we measured the concentrations of DOC, FDOM, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in saline groundwater (Woljeong, Pyoseon, and Hwasun beaches) and coastal seawater (Haengwon, Gwideok, Pyoseon, and Yeongnak) in Jeju, Korea. The highest concentrations of DOC and COD in groundwater were found in Woljeong and Pyoseon, and those in coastal water were observed in Haengwon and Pyoseon, indicating that the higher concentrations of DOC and COD seem to be associated with saline groundwater-driven dissolved organic matter (DOM) and/or biogeochemical processes. According to origin and optical properties of DOM using FDOM as a tracer, proportion of humic-like FDOM, more refractory DOM, was relatively greater in the groundwater than in the coastal water. With regard to this result, there was no relationship between DOC and COD in groundwater, while DOC showed a good positive correlation (r2 = 0.66) with COD in coastal water. This result indicates that COD as an indicator of assessment of DOM has a limitation in which it is difficult to quantify refractory DOM. Although DOC is a potential alternative to COD in the coastal environments, particulate organic carbon cannot be negligible due to relatively higher concentration compared to the open ocean. Therefore, the use of total organic carbon (TOC) as a replacement of COD in the coastal ocean is important, and the evaluation criterion of the TOC is necessary in order to evaluate of organic matter indicator in the various coastal environments.

  • Coagulation is very important process in water works. The subsequent processes are directly affected by this process. Many factors such as turbidity, alkalinity, pH, hardness, total organic carbon(TOC), velocity gradient and flocculation time effect on coagulation process. Among these factors, specially TOC is being concerned target substance to be removed due to trihalomenthanes(THMs) precursor and alkalinity is being one of the major parameter for removing TOC. We have researched the consumption of coagulant with TOC alkalinity concentration of water and removal efficiency of residual TOC and turbidity with alkalinity. Furthermore we have investigated particle size distributions with velocity gradient and alkalinity. The consumption of coagulant was proportionally increased to TOC and alkalinity concentration and the removal of TOC in Nakdong river water was very difficult more than 150 mg/l in alkalinity but large morecular weight organic such as humic acid could be removed easily. Coagulation of low alkalinity water was more rapidly occured than of high alkalinity water by analyzing the particle size distributions. High alkalinity water needed higher mixing energy for a good coagulation within limited flocculation time.

  • Livestock manure is known to be the main cause of non-point pollution in agricultural areas. The pollutant reduction ratio of livestock manure recycling to fertilizers was measured in order to analyze the effect on the water quality of the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) system in Korea. The reduction ratio has been applied by theoretical consideration without a survey, and there is no value for Total Organic Carbon (TOC) newly introducing any organic items. The reduction ratio of each pollutant from this study was revealed as follows: TOC, BOD, T-N and T-P were 0.34, 0.60, 0.37, and 0.42 for individual farm and 0.38, 0.61, 0.45 and 0.44 for entrustment facilities, respectively. The reduction ratio of individual farm was surveyed as TOC 0.63, BOD 0.62, T-N 0.42 and T-P 0.32 for liquid fertilizer, and TOC 0.30, BOD 0.64, T-N 0.40 and T-P 0.48 for compost. The total reduction ratio was derived by multiplying the ratio for liquid fertilizer and compost by the respective load. Compared to the pollutant reduction ratio of the individual farm with entrustment facilities marking the higher in liquid fertilizer and the lower in compost. Through this study, we found the difference of pollutant reduction ratio between a livestock manure recycling process and facilities. Although phosphorus is known as a preservative matter, the treatment efficiency of T-P is analyzed to decrease by chemical precipitation.

  • Dissolved and particulate organic carbon concentrations and fluxes were measured and estimated for the Yeongsan River during 2006~2015. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations ranged from 2.49 to $4.39mg{\cdot}C/L$ with a variance of 30.1% (${\sigma}_x/\bar{x}$), and showed a simple correlation to algal bloom and precipitation. The particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations had gradually decreased from 6.68 to $0.19mg{\cdot}C/L$ for 10 years, and changed definitely with weir construction in 2011. Based on the relationships between POC and suspended particulate matters and between POC and chlorophyll-a, we found out that the distinct variation of the origin and composition of POC was caused by stagnation and screening effect of the dammed river. The total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations dropped to 52.3% (from 8.26 to $3.94mg{\cdot}C/L$) as the POC concentrations diminished to more than 94.8% after weir construction, in which the DOC forms up to 90.9%. The fluxes of TOC, based on the relationship between the annual TOC concentration and the discharge of Yeongsan dike sluice, were $2.56{\sim}19.41{\times}10^9g{\cdot}C/yr$, and showed a great deal of variability in 2011. Since then the TOC flux dropped to $5.40{\times}10^9$ (2011~2015) from $14.54{\times}10^9g{\cdot}C/yr$ (2006~2010). These results suggest that the weirs trapped annually $1.83{\times}10^9g{\cdot}C$ on a river bed, but released in great levels of dissolved organic form at their exits.

  • Currently, the demand for real-time monitoring of water quality has increased dramatically. Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis is a suitable method for real-time analysis compared with conventional biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) methods in terms of analysis time. However, this method is expensive because of the complicated internal processes involved. The photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based TOC method is simpler as it omits more than three preprocessing steps. This is because it reacts only with organic carbon (OC) without extra processes. We optimized the rate between the TiO2 photocatalyst and binder solution and the TiO2 concentration. The efficiency was investigated under 365 nm UV exposure onto a TiO2 coated substrate. The optimized conditions were sufficient to apply a real-time monitoring system for water quality with a short reaction time (within 10 min). We expect that it can be applied in a wide range of water quality monitoring industries.

  • Through concentrated investments in environmental regulations centered around BOD, which is a biodegradable matter index, and basic environmental infrastructures, national BOD pollution level has continuously improved. Nonetheless, limitations of BOD management system has become evident through nation-wide stagnation and/or increases of refractory organic matters, such as COD, at main drinking water sources, and the need for a new index, which can easily indicate different environmental conditions, has increased. Therefore, this study suggests a new organic management index for a proper management of surface water. $COD_{Cr}$ and TOC were examined as candidates for surface water quality management index, and it was found that TOC was more appropriate than $COD_{Cr}$ as an organic matter management index. Through this study, it was found that TOC possesses following qualities: a more representative index; international acceptability; monitoring program is easier; better availability of analysis techniques; better accuracy and precision of analysis; less time required for analysis; ease of operation; management of disinfection byproducts; connection with present policies; existence of foreign and domestic application case studies; and correlation with water ecosystem.

  • The spatial variation of organic matter sources in tidal flat sediment of the Nanakita River estuary, involving Gamo lagoon on the north-east coast of Honshu Island, Japan, was examined using carbon stable isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. The spatial variation of total organic carbon (TOC) contents and ${\delta}^{13}C$ values were highly variable in between the stations, such as sandy flat (1.3 mg/g, -21.0‰), sand-muddy flat (2.6 mg/g, -21.9‰), and muddy flat (24.9 mg/g, -25.9‰), respectively. Particularly, at the muddy flat, high TOC content and low ${\delta}^{13}C$ value of the sediments indicated that the surface sediment was composed largely of terrestrial organic matter. Whereas, at the sandy flat and sand-muddy flat, the high ratios of diatom and bacteria biomarkers indicated the high contribution of abundant microorganism along with marine organic matter in sediment composition. From these results, it considered that the amount and origin of transported sedimentary organic matter indicated different characteristics in this study stations.

  • Red lateritic soils are typically low in total organic carbon (TOC) and available phosphorus (AP) content and continuous fertilization is required to obtain desired crop yield. In this experiment, cattle manure in three forms (air-dried, composted and vermicomposted) were applied to red lateritic soil to study their effect on TOC and AP content of soil and probable mechanism of P-solubilization as affected by these treatments were also studied. Vermicompost was the most effective to solubilize insoluble P in red lateritic soil (Alfisols) as compared to other organic amendments (air-dried cattle manure and compost). The highest SPA in vermicompost-treated soil attributed to the comparatively higher concentration of all the three SPA isozymes in these soils. The maximum P-solubilization in these soils might be attributed to the highest SPA and presence of several organic acids like citric, lactic and oxalic acids in vermicompost-treated soils. Since, vermicompost application also increased TOC, mineralizable N and exchangeable K content of soil, vermicompost could be considered as the most rational organic amendment to improve chemical properties of red lateritic soils.
