As ships become to be larger than ever, the thicker plate and the higher tensile steel plate are used in naval shipyard. Though special chemical composition is needed for high-tensile steels, recent high-tensile steels are made by the TMCP(Thermo-Mechanical control process) skill. The increase of yield stress and tensile stress of TMCP steels is induced from bainite phase which is transformed from austenite, but that increased yield stress can be vanished by another additional thermal cycle like welding and heating. As thermal deformations are deeply related by yield stress of material, the study for prediction of plate deformation by heating should reflect principle of TMCP steels. This study developed an algorithm which can calculate inherent strain. In this algorithm, not only the mechanical principles of thermal deformations, but also the predicting of the portion of initial bainite is considered when calculating inherent strain. The simulations of plate deformation by these values showed good agreements with experimental results of normalizing steels and TMCP steels in welding and heating. Finally we made an inherent strain database of steels used in Class rule.
Fatigue behavior of the AH, DH and EH grade TMCP(Thermo-Mechanical Control Process) steels was studied. High cycle and low cycle fatigue tests were carried out for the weldment and base metal of each steel. The results showed that the fatigue limit at 2 * $10^6$ cycles was 33 to 37 kg/$mm^2$ for the base metal and 30 to 34 kg/$mm^2$ for the weldment. The ratio of fatigue limit to tensile strength for TMCP steels was 0.65 to 0.71, which was a value close to the upper limit for the ordinary steels. It was also found that the high cycle fatigue behavior of TMCP steels could be affected by the microstructures of base metal. It will be necessary to have fine structure for TMCP steels to increase the fatigue resistance. In low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue lifetime of AH and DH steels accorded well with the ASME best fit curve, while that of EH steel was considerably lower than the fatigue lifetime of the other steels. Fatigue resistance of the weldment made by high heat input(180kJ/cm) welding was not lower than that made by low heat input(80kJ/cm) welding in case of high cycle fatigue, but the high heat input welding decreased the fatigue resistance in case of low cycle fatigue.

Fatigue strength of offshore structures or ship structures is significantly decreased due to corrosive environment condition such as sea water and/or coal, crude oil of cargoes, compared to that of on shore structures. In corrosive environment, fatigue strength of structures also depends on characteristics of weld material heat affected zone(HAZ). In this research work, rotary bending fatigue tests of parent material and HAZ of TMCP steel were performed in order to investigate the initiation and propagation of cracks both in air and in NaCl solution. Comparison of fatigue strength In relation with the salinity of NaCl were carried out as well. According to the test results weld material or HAZ of TMCP steel showed higher fatigue strength than that of the parent material. The fatigue strength of TMCP steel decreases drastically in NaCl solution compared to that of in air environment. In particular, more reduced fatigue strength is observed in 1% NaCl solution than in 3% NaCl solution.
In this paper, the fracture toughness evaluation of the various microstructures such as HAZ, F.L and W.M in weldment of TMCP steel which has the softening zone owing to high heat input welding was carried out by using of the small punch(SP) test. In addition, the fracture toughness with the specimen orientation of rolled TMCP steel was investigated by means of SP test and the crack opening displacement (COD) test and then was compared with that of conventional SM50YB steel. From the results of SP test for TMCP steel, it could be seen that the SP energy transition curves of three different orientation were shifted to higher temperature side in order of S, T and L. But the {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} of each orientation specimen did not show a lot of differences and were quite lower than those of conventional SM50YB steel. The mechanical properties of HAZ structure in weldment of TMCP steel such as hardness, SP energy at room temperature and -196$^{\circ}C$ and the upper shelf energy of SP energy transition curve were lower than those of base metal due to softening. The {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} of each microstructure in weldment of TMCP steel increased in order of HAZ, F.L and W.M against base metal, but all microstructures showed a quite lower {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} than those of SM50YB steel.
Weldability of the TMCP steel manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process was investigated. For comparison, two other steel plates produced by different manufacturing processes were selected; normalized and controlled rolled. Tandem submerged arc welding with both side one run technique was carried out. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; TMCP steel having the lowest carbon equivalent shows the best combination of mechanical properties, not only in the base metal but also in the heat affected zone. In the HAZ, the accelerated colling effect imarted on the trengthis releved by the weld thermal cycles, and thus the strength of the welded joint decrease substantially accompanied with the fracture in the HAZ. On the other hand, not only the softening but the fine microstructure can preserve the high toughness of TMCP steel in the HAZ.
The offshore industry created a need for quality wet weld repairs. Wet welding is a fast method of repair providing sound, structural quality welds. It requires less support equipment than a similar underwater dry weld repair or the alternative mechanical connections. Compared to welds made in air, underwater wet welds are plagued by increased hardness due to rapid quenching by the surrounding water. In this paper is described the experimntal study of improving the cooling rates of wet welds of TMCP steel plate by shielding around weld arc surroundings. The principal results of this experimental investigation can be summarized as follows : By shielding around weld arc surrounding, the cooling rates resulting from wet welds on TMCP steel plate could be lower than that of nonshielded wet welds and the fesibility on high quality of mecanical properties of wet weld on TMCP steel plate was carried out with shielded weld arc surrounding.
In order to develop a method of corrosion fatigue design and estimate reliability of TMCP steel using as the material of heavy industries and plants, its corrosion susceptibilities and corrosion fatigue life considering corrosion degradation were investigated. From the results, the corrosion characteristic of TMCP steel is very susceptible in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. Its susceptibility was linearly increased with the solution temperature increase. The potential difference due to the crack growth behavior in $25^{\circ}C$, 3.5wt.% NaCl solution is very susceptible. And it was found that stress amplitude has a linear relationship with the critical potential. Therefore, it is expected that the corrosion fatigue life of TMCP steel can be nondestructively predicted using the DCPD method.
In order to develop a method of corrosion fatigue design and estimate reliability of TMCP steel using as the material of heavy industries and plants, its corrosion susceptibilities, corrosion fatigue strength, and determination of fatigue design criterion considering corrosion degradation were investigated. From the results, the corrosion characteristic of TMCP steel is very susceptible in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. Its susceptibility was linearly increased with the solution temperature increase. The corrosion fatigue strength in $25${\circ}$, 3.5wt.% NaCl solution is very lower than that of in air. And also, it was decreased with the frequency decrease in the same environment. It is expected that the developed corrosion fatigue design method for TMCP steel is useful. However, it is necessary to verify its reliability for actual application.
Recently developed TMCP steels, which were manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process, were examined to study their characteristics and weldability. Accelerated cooling type TMCP steel's hardness test result exhibited high value on weld zone. On the contrary, base metal and HAZ exhibited comparatively the similar value. On this experiment result Softening of HAZ is not occurred. in the-heat affected zone, grain size repression be caused by chemical composition properties which a small quantity Al-Ti-B-N. Changing stress ratio near-threshold fatigue crack propagation experiments were carried out. According to this result, crack propagation velocity of the HAZ exhibited slower than the base metal and near-threshold value had increased at the HAZ. Finally accelerated cooling type TMCP steels were exhibited excellent mechanical properties in both strength and toughness.
Application of the relationship $da/dN=C({\Delta}K)^{m}$ is effective in the analysis of fatigue crack growth life. The values of material constant C and m have great influences on the predicted fatigue life and the relationship between fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor range(${\Delta}K$) is effective in fatigue crack growth behavior. In this paper, fatigue crack growth behavior of the welded joints in HT60 grade TMCP(Thermo Machanical Control Process) steel have been studied. To evalute the fatigue crack growth rates of HT60 grade TMCP steel, fatigue test was performed by base metal(BM), heat affected zone(HAZ) and weld metal(WM) in TMCP steel at room temperature. We determined the relationship of $da/dN-{\Delta}K$ by correlation between C and m obtained from the Paris-Erdogan power law data supplied HT60 grade TMCP steel. The obtained results from this study indicate that fatigue crack growth rate of TMCP steel is not influenced by softening effect which occurs in the HAZ when high heat input weld is carried out. Softening effects, which affect fatigue properties. are shown that it is not affected to the fatigue growth rates significantly.
