  • To evaluate the ratio of gutta-percha area in the canal after canal obturation with Continuous Wave of Condensation Technique (CWCT) with varying depths of plugger penetration, forty root canals of extracted human teeth were prepared up to size 40 of 0.06 taper with $ProFile^{(R)}$. Canals of three groups were filled with CWCT with System $B^{TM}$ (Analytic Tech. , USA) and different plugger penetration depths of 3, 5, or 7 mm from the apex. Canals of one group were filled with lateral condensation technique as a control The felled teeth were cross-sectioned at 1, 2 and 3 mm levels from the apical foramen. The ratio of gutta-percha area in the canal was analyzed using $Auto^{(R)}$ Cad 2000. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. At all levels, higher gutta-percha area ratio was found with deeper plugger penetration depth in CWCT, and cold lateral condensation group showed higher ratio than group of plugger penetration to apical 7 mm in CWCT. At apical 1 mm and 2 mm levels, group of plugger penetration to apical 3 mm showed significantly high or gutta-percha area ratio than those of apical 7 mm and lateral condensation (p<0.05). It is concluded therefore that, under the conditions of the present study, deeper plugger penetration depth results in more favorable and efficient obturation in CWCT.

  • The scattering solutions for multiple rectangular metallic gratings in a perfectly conducting plane excited by the TE and TM delta sources are presented using an overlapping T-block method. A reflectarray composed of rectangular metallic gratings shows fanbeam radiation patterns that are useful for an electromagnetic fence. The scattering characteristics of multiple rectangular gratings were computed in terms of total radiated power and antenna directivity. The design method of a fan-beam reflectarray to obtain high directivity was also compared with superdirective radiation and parabolic reflector phase.

  • Using the transmission line model, we have developed a formalism which is fairly accurate and convenient for analyzing the dispersion characteristics of rectangular dielectric waveguides for integrated optics. The fields in open half space regions are expressed as a Fourier integral form. Including all the TE and TM polarized discrete modes in slab waveguide region, our calculation shows that the discrepancies between the previous vectorial wave analysis using one discrete mode and the brute-force numerical analysis for the rectangular dielectric waveguides can be fully reduced with this method.

  • The characteristics of traveling-wave electrodes for high-frequency electroptic integrated devices are described from the view point of improvement of phase-matching based on the conformal mapping method. Specific calculations of the characteristic impedance, effective microwave index, and eletrode loss for asymmetric coplanar strip(ACPS) and coplanar waveguide(CPW) electrode structures are presented as a function of the geometric electrode parameters including the electrode thickness and buffer layer thickness. 5-10(x10S0-6Tm) thick Au-ACPS electrodes were successfully fabricated by electroplating and ECR etcher. The improvement of modulation bandwidth can be theoretically observed from the combination of electrode and buffer layer thickness.

  • This paper has reviewed the performances of various AGCs which can be adopted in IEEE802.11p modems. IEEE802.11p, a high speed mobile communication standard for vehicles, requires high performance signal detector since the channel impulse responses are varied rapidly in time. In order to select the optimal signal detector, we simulated the performances of three detection methods. One is using RSSI signal, the other is using RSSI signal and I/Q signal, and the third is using I/Q signal through the Monte Carlo simulation. We evaluated the performances of the algorithms using our own system based on MAX 2829 transceiver(MAXIM $Integrated^{TM}$) in a real vehicular environment. As a result, the experiment using Fully I/Q signal derives the most excellent performance with the lowest minimum receiver sensitivity, packet error rate (PER) and false alarm rate (FAR).

  • Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive diagnostic method particularly suited to investigation the long motor tracts. The clinical value of TMS in most spinal cord diseases has still to be made. Diagnostic value of magnetic motor evoked potential (MEP) parameters in intramedullary spinal cord lesions was investigated. Methods: MEP elicited by TMS was recorded in 57 patients with clinically and radiologically defined intramedullary myelopathy. Twenty five patients with cervical myelopathy (CM) and 32 thoracic myelopathy (TM) were included. Recordings were performed during resting and minimal voluntary contraction at both abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles. Stimulation threshold(ST), amplitude, and central motor conduction time (CCT) were measured at resting and facilitated conditions. CCT was calculated by two means; central motor latency (CML)-M using magnetic transcranial and root stimulation, and CML-F using electrical F-wave study. The results were compared between patient groups and 10 normal control group. Results: Facilitated mean ST recorded at TA was elevated in both CM and TM compared with control group. Resting mean CML-M at TA was significantly prolonged in both CM and TM, and CML-M was absent or delayed in 37.1% of CM and 8% of TM at APB with facilitation. Facilitated mean MEP amplitude at ABP was lower in CM than in TM, while MEP/M ratios were not different significantly between groups. Conclusions: Magnetic motor evoked potential has diagnostic value in intramedullary myelopathy and localizing value in differentiating between CM and TM by recording at APB and TA. It is a noninvasive way to investigate the functional status of motor tracts of spinal cord.

  • In this paper, we have performed a study that modifies the CPW Pad configurations to improve an $f_{max}$ characteristic of metamorphic HEMT. To analyze the CPW Pad structures of MHEMT, we use the ADS momentum simulator developed by $Agilent^{TM}$. Comparing the employed structure (G/W = 40/100 m), the optimized structure (G/W = 20/25 m) of CPW MHEMT shows the increased $S_{21}$ by 2.5 dB, which is one of the dominant parameters influencing the $f_{max}$ of MHEMT. To compare the performances of optimized MHEMT with the employed MHEMT, DC and RF characteristics of the fabricated MHEMT were measured. In the case of optimized CPW MHEMT, the measured saturated drain current density and transconductance $(g_m)$ were 693 mA/mm and 647 mS/mm, respectively. RF measurements were performed in a frequency range of $0.1{\sim}110$ GHz. A high $S_{21}$ gain of 5.5 dB is shown at a millimeter-wave frequency of 110 GHz. Two kinds of RF gains, $h_{21}$ and maximum available gain (MAG), versus the frequency, and a cut-off frequency ($f_t$) of ${\sim}154$ GHz and a maximum frequency of oscillation ($f_{max}$) of ${\sim}358$ GHz are obtained, respectively, from the extrapolation of the RF gains for a device biased at a peak transconductance. An optimized CPW MHEMT structure is one of the first reports among fabricated 0.1 m gate length MHEMTs.

  • We have demonstrated a -8 dB additional reduction in the intensity sidelobe of an apodized-interaction-strength guide-wave acousto-optic filter with a center passband of 1551.6 nm. Acoustic-intensity weighting was achieved by launching a surface acoustic wave (SAW) beam in a straight acoustic waveguide, and gradually transferring this SAW intensity to the active device, and back out, by evanescent-wave coupling across a 50 !lm barrier over a 19 rom interaction length. The intensity sidelobe was -4.27 dB for an unapodized filter with abmpt onset and cutoff of the interaction, but sidelobes were reduced to at most -12.68 dB for a SAW intensity with raised-cosine weighting. The RF driving power was 17.78 mW. A linear tuning rate of 8.86 nmIMHz and a spectral width of -1.7 nm were demonstrated. rated.
