This paper describes the performance improvement of dc TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welder. The TIG welder consists of single phase full bridge IGBT inverter which incorporates the high frequency transformer, the boost converter for improving the input power factor, and the arc start system. The arc will be generated without fail even when the extension cable between the torch and the power source is 100m long. In addition, the arc start system with a short dc output voltage will generate less EMI noise than the traditional arc start system with a high frequency output voltage. To demonstrate the practical significance of the proposed methods, some simulation studies are presented.
In this paper we proposed AC/DC boost converter to improve input current harmonic reduction in TIG welder. The proposed harmonic reduction circuit with UC2854AN acting on constant switching frequency average current control has a three-loop control structure : the inner current loop the line voltage feed-forward loop and th outer voltage loop. Also we applied the constant current strategy on full bridge IGBT inverter to stabilized the output current using the analog PI controller. To demonstrate the practical significance of the proposed methods some simulation studies and experimental results are presented.
Pulse TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is often considered the most difficult of all the welding processes commonly used in industry. Because the welder must maintain a short arc length, great care and skill are required to prevent contact between the electrode and the workpiece. Pulse TIG welding is most commonly used to weld thin sections of stainless steel, non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, magnesium and copper alloys. It is significantly slower than most other welding techniques and comparatively more complex and difficult to master as it requires greater welder dexterity than MIG or stick welding. The problems associated with manual TIG welding includes undercutting, tungsten inclusions, porosity, Heat affected zone cracks and also the adverse effect on health of welding gun operator due to amount of tungsten fumes produced during the welding process. This brings the necessity of automation. Hence, In this paper an attempt has been made to build a customerized setup of Pulse TIG welding based on through review of Pulse TIG welding parameters. The cost associated for making automated TIG is found to be low as compared to SPM (Special Purpose machines) available in the market.
In recent years, A PWM Converter or Switched Mode Converter with high power factor and sinusoidal input current have got widespread studied. But, Almost all of studies is based on linear load. This paper reports on research aimed at achieving high power factor and sinusoidal input current waveform for electronic arc welder, which has nonlinear dynamic characteristics. It is shown that simulation result yield its property.
In this paper, the inverter TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding system with high power efficiency by means of pulse current control of welding process is presented. In TIG welding, pulse current control is utilized in order to attain less apatter and high welding performance. The four factors which determine the welding performance of the pulse current are frequency, base current, peak current, and peak current duty current, and peak current duty ratio. In this paper, we analyze these factors should be controlled to achieve minimum power input. To demonstrate the practical significance of our results, we present some experimental results as well as simulation results.
Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is commonly used in industries that require airtightness, watertightness, oiltightness, and precision. It is a non-consumable welding method that is commonly used for the welding of non-ferrous metals, but it can be used to weld most metals. The methods of TIG welding can be divided into three types. The first, manual welding is done directly on the metal by a welder with a torch. The second, semi-automatic welding, gets help from a material supplying machine, but it is conducted by a welder. Lastly, automated welding is conducted fully by a machine during its process and operation. Depending on the selection of electrode, the amount of heat that is applied to the base material and the electrode rod changes and makes the shape of welded parts different. A direct-current positive electrode was used for this study. Through the change of shielding gas type on a structural steel (SS-400) that is commonly used in industry, the composition and shape changes in welded parts were detected after welding. The heat-affected area, hardness value, and tensile strength were also identified through hardness testing and tensile testing. In this study, it was found that the higher hardness value of the heat-affected is, the weaker the tensile strength becomes.
It is generally used the boost converter for the welding machine using fuel cell. But this type generates the duplicate loss between boost converter and inverter. As a result, the whole efficiency is lower than conventional inverter arc welder and the cost is expensive due to additional switching device. Therefore, we proposed the inverter rectification type DC-DC converter with boost converter function in fuel cell based TIG welder. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated on a 1.2kW fuel cell stack based experimental prototype circuit.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the exposure to ozone and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) generated during welding work at a shipyard and recommend respiratory protective equipment(RPE) adequate against these hazards. Method: Ozone was collected for about 30 minutes at two-minutes intervals using a direct reading instrument, specifically an ozone analyzer(Serinus 10, Ecotech, Australia). TVOCs were collected for about 30 minutes at three-minute intervals using a portable GC (Alpha 115, Synspec BV, the Netherlands), and were determined simultaneously by area sampling at the welding plume closest to the welder's breathing zone. The total measurements were 162 for ozone($CO_2$ welding 47, TIG 60, stick 55), and 136 for TVOCs($CO_2$ 65, TIG 50, stick 21). Based on these measurements, a literature survey was conducted to assess the adequacy of RPE. Results: Relative to Korean OEL, measurements above STEL 0.2 ppm were 23.4% for $CO_2$, 63.3% for TIG and 14.5% for stick welding. There were significant differences(p=<0.0001) among welding types. Compared with ACGIH peak exposure of 0.4 ppm for ozone, which is not applied in Korea, $CO_2$ welding exceeded it by 10.6%, TIG by 40.0% and stick by 7.3%. Although it was not feasible to compare them directly since there are no Korean OEL, TVOCs had very high levels similar to the concentrations before moving into a new apartment and about 10-20 times the indoor air quality recommendations for some individual measurements. Conclusions: As ozone removal RPE has been recommended in welding environments for a long time(Lunau, 1967), this fact was demonstrated based on the results of the on-site work environment measurements(ozone and TVOCs). In conclusion, for all welding at a shipyard, gas/vapor and particulate combination RPE are recommended. If this is not possible, it should at least be present for TIG welding.
