A Study on the High Temperature Tensile Property and the Characteristics of Residual Stress in Welds of High Strength Steels (고강도강재의 고온인장특성 및 용접시 잔류응력특징에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, high temperature tensile properties of high strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) were investigated. The three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic analyses were conducted to investigate the characteristics of welding residual stresses in welds of high strength steels on the basis of thermal and mechanical properites at high temperature obtained from the experiment. According to the results, high temperature tensile strength of POSTEN60 steel deteriorated slowly to 10$0^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up, the tensile strength became better because of blue shortness, and it deteriorated radically after reaching to the maximum value around 30$0^{\circ}C$. For the POSTEN80 steel, high temperature tensile strength deteriorated slowly to 20$0^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up the tensile strength became better and it deteriorated slowly to $600^{\circ}C$ after reached to the maximum value around 30$0^{\circ}C$. Strain of high strength steels at the elevated temperature increased radically after the mercury rose to $600^{\circ}C$. The strain hardening ratio of POSTEN60 steel was larger then that of POSTEN80 steel at the elevated temperature as in the case at the room temperature and it became smaller radically after the mercury rose to 40$0^{\circ}C$. An Experimental Study on the Improvement of Fuel Economy according to Coolant and Oil Temperature (냉각수 및 오일의 온도에 따른 연비향상에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, the internal combustion engines have focused on reducing the $CO_2$ gas in order to cope with severe regulations for fuel economy. Therefore, various new technologies have been developed. Among them, cooling system is spotlighted because it has great effect on fuel economy. In this study, we measured the friction losses of engine parts according to engine speed and oil temperature. We also obtained optimized oil temperature which has the minimum friction losses. Then, we selected optimized oil temperature range and gave informations of friction losses for each engine parts. In addition, we analyzed relationship between coolant temperature and oil temperature by using engine performance test system. From this experiment, we obtained the database for relationship between coolant temperature and oil temperature. Then, we found the optimal temperature about engine oil. We analyzed BSFC and exhaust emissions by controlling the high coolant temperture. If we controlled coolant temperature more higher, BSFC has a little difference but exhaust emissions such as THC and CO have reduced. By using these experimental results, we predicted that IC engine have more low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions by optimized cooling control strategy.

  • The criteria such as ASTM recommends that the zero reading process of CPT must be performed in the same temperature condition with underground in order to reduce the effect of temperature. However, this method can not consider the change of temperature occurred during penetration. In this study, ultra small size temperature sensor with 0.5mm in diameter is manufactured to estimate and compensate the effect of temperature by using FBG sensor. The continuous temperature changes are monitored during cone penetration by using FBG temperature sensor installed in cone penetrometer. The temperature compensated tip resistances show the uniform and similar distributions with depth in different with originally measured tip resistance in cohesive soil. This study verifies that the tip resistances measured by previous zero reading method are affected by the change of underground temperature, and suggests the new temperature compensation technique using by FBG temperature sensor.

Design thermal loading for composite bridges in tropical region

  • In the design of bridges, it is important to consider the thermal stresses induced by the non-linear temperature distribution as well as the variation of effective temperature in the bridge deck. To cope with this, design temperature profiles are provided by design codes, which are normally based on extensive research work. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive investigation on the thermal behaviour of bridges in Hong Kong with special emphasis on composite bridges. The temperature distribution in bridges depends primarily on the solar radiation, ambient air temperature and wind speed in the vicinity. Apart from data of the meteorological factors, good estimates of the thermal properties of material and the film coefficients are necessary for the prediction of temperature distribution. The design temperature profiles for various types of composite bridge deck with bituminous surfacing and concrete slab of different thicknesses are proposed. The factors affecting the design effective temperature are also reviewed and suitable values for Hong Kong are proposed. Results are compared with recommendations of the current local code. The method facilitates the development of site-specific temperature profiles for code documents, and it can also be applied to create zoning maps for temperature loading for large countries where there are great climatic differences.

A comparision study on the variation of skin temperature on the adult male. female at environmental temperature (각 환경기온하에서의 성인 남녀의 피부온 비교)

  • With a view to providing basic data for designing male's and female's clothes, healthy males and females(five each) were exposed to three different environmental temperature($20{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$, $28{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$, $32{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$) in the nude. Their adaptation of skin temperature, physiological responses( rectal temperature, blood pressure, pulse rates) and psychological reactions(thermal, comfort and perceptive sweaty sensations) were analyzed as follows; The subjects's skin temperature had a similar look of adaptation, but the stability of skin temperature differed at tha $20{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ and at the $28{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ Males had higher skin temperature at three environmental temperatures, but females showed a higher temperature change at the $20{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ and $28{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ and males at the$32{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ Thus females were more resistant to the cold, while males were more resistant to the heat. As environmental temperature increased, rectal temperature and pulse rates also grew up. Females turned higher in rectal temperature and lower in blood pressure, but both sexes had a normal range of physiological reactions. Even though three environmental temperatures were same changes in thermal sensation at $28{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$and in perceptive sweat sensation at $32{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$, two sexes had the same response in comfort sensation at the three environmental temperatures.

Comparative Study of Maximum Temperature Condition in Green Space (녹지 조건에 따른 최고기온의 비교연구)

  • In this study, we observed air temperature to make clear that land coverage condition and forest form has a certain relationship to air temperature in a day in various green space. And with revolution analysis, interpreted relationship of air temperature distribution in the green space, of land coverage rate and air temperature, of volume of tree and temperature. With this experimental result, propose green plan, taking into consideration lower effect of air temperature. In this result lower zone is formed in forest and water area, higher zone is done in paved surface and barren ground. And arbor+subarbor area, water area sur-rounded forest and small river is formed relative lower air temperature. In my opinion to promote efficiency lower air temperature area, it is need to make water area surrounded forest, to make forest form lower air temperature 2∼3 layer forest. Lower air temperature effect is in order of arbor, subarbor, shrub and is proportioned increasing of tree.

  • There are numerous studies on relations between sleep and environmental factors such as noise, illumination and thermal conditions. Sleep is affected by the thermal environment. This study describes influence of thermal environment on skin temperature, sleep patterns and body movements using physiological and psychological measurements. The results are as follows: 1) The fluctuations of room temperature during sleep appeared skin temperature variations. The more room temperature is high, the more skin temperature is high in 22$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$, 30$^{\circ}C$. 2) A significant relation between body movement and skin temperature was found within room temperature. Under room temperature conditions of 22$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$, 30$^{\circ}C$, there were significantly higher rates of body movement in the room temperature(30$^{\circ}C$). 3) Uncomfortable after sleep in thermal environment is mostly under high temperature(30$^{\circ}C$), and they are about fatigue due to not enough sleeping. 4) The degree of indoor thermal temperature with sufficient sleeping is in 22.8 ∼ 27.8$^{\circ}C$.

Virtual Simulation of Temperature Distribution throughout Beef Packages with Time-temperature Indicator (TTI) Labels

  • If the time-temperature indicator (TTI) experienced a different temperature than the accompanied packaged food, influenced by heat transfer between the TTI, package, and ambient air, TTI would incorrectly predict the food quality changes with temperature. Temperature distributions of a finite slab with different sizes, representing beef packaged with TTI, were estimated by the finite element method (FEM). The thermal properties of the beef and TTI, such as heat capacity, density, and heat conductivity, were estimated from the relevant equations using their chemical compositions. The FEM simulations were performed for three cases: different locations of TTIs on the beef, different thicknesses of beef, and non-isothermal conditions of ambient air. The TTIs were mounted in four different locations on the beef. There was little difference in temperature between four locations of the TTI on the package surface. As the thickness of the slab increased, the temperature of the TTI changed faster, followed by the corner surface, as well as middle and bottom parts, indicating the possible error for temperature agreement between the TTI and the slab. Consequently, it was found that any place on the package could be selected for TTI attachment, but the package size should carefully be determined within a tolerable error of temperature.

Effect of Solution Temperature on the Cavitation Corrosion Properties of Carbon Steel and its Electrochemical Effect

  • In the open system (vessel and pipe), the maximum corrosion rate of carbon steel at ca. 80 ℃ was obtained due to the decrease of dissolved oxygen by increasing the solution temperature. Effect of temperature on the cavitation damage can be explained through several mechanisms. Moreover, when cavitation occurs on the surface of metal and alloys, whether cavitation is erosion or corrosion is still controversial. This work focused on the effect of solution temperature on the corrosion of carbon steel under cavitation in an open system, Tests were performed using an electrochemical cavitation corrosion tester in 3.5% NaCl solution and the effect of solution temperature of carbon steel was discussed. Cavitation corrosion rate can be increased by cavitation, but when the temperature increases, a dissolved oxygen content reduces at a very high speed and thus the maximum cavitation corrosion temperature changed from 80 ℃ to 45 ℃. Below the maximum cavitation temperature, the electrochemical effect was more dominant than the mechanical effect by increasing temperature, but over the maximum cavitation temperature, the mechanical effect was more dominant than the electrochemical effect by increasing temperature.
