TCSC Nonlinear Adaptive Damping Controller Design Based on RBF Neural Network to Enhance Power System Stability

  • In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive damping controller based on radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), which can infinitely approximate to nonlinear system, is proposed for thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC). The proposed TCSC adaptive damping controller can not only have the characteristics of the conventional PID, but adjust the parameters of PID controller online using identified Jacobian information from RBFNN. Hence, it has strong adaptability to the variation of the system operating condition. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is tested on a two-machine five-bus power system and a four-machine two-area power system under different operating conditions in comparison with the lead-lag damping controller tuned by evolutionary algorithm (EA). Simulation results show that the proposed damping controller achieves good robust performance for damping the low frequency oscillations under different operating conditions and is superior to the lead-lag damping controller tuned by EA.

  • This paper deals with decentralized control scheme and its application to multi-machine power systems. Decentralized control scheme has several practical advantages, because power system has geographically distributed characteristics. In this paper, decentralized observer-based optimal Power System Stabilizer(PSS) and Thyristor-Controlled Series Capacitor(TCST) controller are designed and tested in WSCC 9 bus system with one TCSC installed. Simulation results show that the proposed decentralized controller has satisfactory performances comparable to the centralized controller. In addition, using modal analysis, this paper shows that the proposed decentralized controller significantly affects only one pair of eigenvalues which have high participation with each generator, while slightly affects other eigenvalues. This result indicates that the application of the decentralized control scheme to enhance power system dynamic stability via excitation control have potential advantages because each low-damped mode occurs dominantly by each decentralized subsystem.

  • Now days, voltage stability is well recognized as an important problem. It is well known that voltage stability is influenced by the characteristics of load. Up to present, voltage stability researches were done by the static load modeling, but it is needed that the precise analysis by the view point of dynamic load modeling. In this paper, with induction motor as dynamic load, I show the voltage collapse mechanism followed by load increase. Then I propose the protective method of voltage collapse by using TCSC.

  • FACTS devices, such as the Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) and Static Var Compensators (SVC), can help increase system load margin to improve static voltage stability. In power systems, because of the high cost and the effect value, the optimal placement for FACTS devices must be determined. This paper investigates the use of the series device (SVC) and the parallel device (TCSC) from the point of load margin to increase voltage stability. It considers the sensitivity of load margin to the line reactance and eigenvector of the collapse. The study has been carried out on the IEEE 14 Bus Test System to verify the validity and efficiency of the method. It reveals that incorporation of FACTS devices significantly enhance load margin as well as system stability.

  • FACTS concept is the control of power flow and increase of the loading on existing lines to the thermal limuts. This paper focuses on the ability of the thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) to stabilize the disturbed power systems. The result shows the potential benefit of the TCSC in addition to the role of controlling the steady state power flow. In order to show the effectiveness of controlled series capacitor, power system dynamic model is augmented and the effect of the SC into the power system dynamics is included. As a control algorithm, Linear Optimal Control theory is applied.

  • This paper presents an analysis for improving the power transfer capability in transmission lines caused by the movable load charging of electric vehicles (EVs). EVs are expected to be used more widely and replace gas fuel vehicles in the near future due to the shortage of fossil fuels and for environmental preservation. Movable load charging of EVs could lead to the convergence of transferred power flow and overloading conditions in transmission lines in a specific area of a power system, which is conventionally based on estimated fixed load capability. To analyze these conditions, the New England Test System was divided into four regions based on the load characteristics, and different charging scenarios were considered. In these scenarios, the regional power load was highly increased to 31% based on the standard charging capacity of an EV. As a solution to the overloading problem of transmission lines, a TCSC was installed serially on the overloaded line to directly control the transferred power under limited line capability (100% load capability). The simulation showed that the application of a few TCSCs could efficiently and economically control the line capability problem caused by movable load charging of EVs.

Congestion Management in Deregulated Power System by Optimal Choice and Allocation of FACTS Controllers Using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm

  • Congestion management is one of the technical challenges in power system deregulation. This paper presents single objective and multi-objective optimization approaches for optimal choice, location and size of Static Var Compensators (SVC) and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors (TCSC) in deregulated power system to improve branch loading (minimize congestion), improve voltage stability and reduce line losses. Though FACTS controllers offer many advantages, their installation cost is very high. Hence Independent System Operator (ISO) has to locate them optimally to satisfy a desired objective. This paper presents optimal location of FACTS controllers considering branch loading (BL), voltage stability (VS) and loss minimization (LM) as objectives at once using GA. It is observed that the locations that are most favorable with respect to one objective are not suitable locations with respect to other two objectives. Later these competing objectives are optimized simultaneously considering two and three objectives at a time using multi-objective Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithms (SPEA). The developed algorithms are tested on IEEE 30 bus system. Various cases like i) uniform line loading ii) line outage iii) bilateral and multilateral transactions between source and sink nodes have been considered to create congestion in the system. The developed algorithms show effective locations for all the cases considered for both single and multiobjective optimization studies.

  • The control strategy for damping analysis of STATCON is derived based on an energy function of the power system equation. The center-of-angle(COA) coordinated system by a simple equivalent physical system is used and the control law for this system is induced for FACTS devices as TCSC and STATCON. Damping results from the transient performance simulations carried out on the model system.

Optimal Location of FACTS Devices Using Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization Hybrid with Simulated Annealing

  • This paper describes a new stochastic heuristic algorithm in engineering problem optimization especially in power system applications. An improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) called adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO), mixed with simulated annealing (SA), is introduced and referred to as APSO-SA. This algorithm uses a novel PSO algorithm (APSO) to increase the convergence rate and incorporate the ability of SA to avoid being trapped in a local optimum. The APSO-SA algorithm efficiency is verified using some benchmark functions. This paper presents the application of APSO-SA to find the optimal location, type and size of flexible AC transmission system devices. Two types of FACTS devices, the thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) and the static VAR compensator (SVC), are considered. The main objectives of the presented method are increasing the voltage stability index and over load factor, decreasing the cost of investment and total real power losses in the power system. In this regard, two cases are considered: single-type devices (same type of FACTS devices) and multi-type devices (combination of TCSC, SVC). Using the proposed method, the locations, type and sizes of FACTS devices are obtained to reach the optimal objective function. The APSO-SA is used to solve the above non.linear programming optimization problem for better accuracy and fast convergence and its results are compared with results of conventional PSO. The presented method expands the search space, improves performance and accelerates to the speed convergence, in comparison with the conventional PSO algorithm. The optimization results are compared with the standard PSO method. This comparison confirms the efficiency and validity of the proposed method. The proposed approach is examined and tested on IEEE 14 bus systems by MATLAB software. Numerical results demonstrate that the APSO-SA is fast and has a much lower computational cost.

Dynamic Characteristic Analysis of SSSC Based on Multi-bridge PAM Inverter

  • This paper proposes a static synchronous series compensator based on multi-bridge inverter. The proposed system consists of 6 H-bridge modules per phase, which generate 13 pulses for each half period of power frequency. The dynamic characteristic was analyzed by simulations with EMTP code, assuming that it is inserted in the 154-kV transmission line of one-machine-infinite-bus power system. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental works using a scaled model. The proposed system does not require a coupling transformer for voltage injection, and has flexibility in expanding the operation voltage by increasing the number of H-bridge modules.
