A Simple Regression Model for Predicting the TC Intensity Change after Landfall over the Korean Peninsula (한반도 상륙 태풍의 강도변화 예측을 위한 단순회귀모형 개발)

  • We developed a simple regression model for predicting the intesity change (central pressure) of major tropical cyclones (TCs) for 24 hours after landfall using 51 TC cases which landed over the Korean Peninsula for 1951-2004. Clusters 1 and 4 with a relatively strong intensity of TC after landfall classified by Choi and Kim (2007) are used to develop a statistical model for the prediction of TC intensity change. Predicting parameters (falling constants) in the regression models $(P_t=P_0+alnt)$ are 6.46 and 10.11 for clusters 1 and 4, respectively. It might be mentioned that there is some feasibility in employing a simple regression model developed in this study for TC intensity change after landfall for operational purpose of TC forecasting compared with RSMC-Tokyo best-track in both TC cases of Clusters 1 and 4 and Ewiniar (0603) case, but the room for improvement of model still remains for further study.

Monitoring of Veterinary Antibiotics in Animal Compost and Organic Fertilizer with CHARM II System

  • Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in animal compost and organic fertilizer can have adverse effect on ecosystem and eventually human health. The main purpose of this research was to evaluate feasibility of Charm II system for monitoring residuals of VAs in animal compost and organic fertilizer. Four different VAs (Tetracyclines: TCs, Sulfonamides: SAs, Macrolides: MLs, and ${\beta}$-lactams: ${\beta}$-LTs) were analyzed and total of 100 samples were monitored. Results reveled that SAs in animal compost showed the highest detection frequency (64%) with exceeded concentration of criteria. However, very low detection frequency (0-12%) for ${\beta}$-LTs was observed in animal compost and organic fertilizer. Depending on physicochemical properties of each VAs, detection frequency of VAs was determined. In conclusion, charm II system can be utilized to screen if residual of VAs is in animal compost and organic fertilizer. Also, more research is necessary to establish standard method for analysis of VAs in complex matrix and to minimize adverse effect of VAs from source to environment.

Engineering of Recombinant Escherichia coli Towards Methanol Sensing Using Methylobacterium extroquens Two-component Systems

  • Five genes (mxbDM, mxcQE and mxaB) are responsible for the transcription of methanol oxidation genes in Methylobacterium strains. Among these, MxbDM and MxcQE constitute the two-component system (TCS) regulating methanol metabolism. In this study, we integrated the methanol-sensing domain of MxbD and MxcQ with the EnvZ/OmpR from Escherichia coli. The domain-swapping strategy resulted in chimeric histidine kinases (HK's) MxbDZ and MxcQZ AM1 containing recombinant E. coli. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to monitor OmpC expression mediated by the chimeric HK and response regulator (RR) OmpR. Further, an ompC promoter based fluorescent biosensor for sensing methanol was developed. GFP fluorescence was studied both qualitatively and quantitatively in response to environmental methanol. GFP measurement also confirmed ompC expression. Maximum fluorescence was observed at 0.05% methanol and 0.01% methanol using MxbDZ and MxcQZ AM1, respectively. Thus the chimeric HK containing E. coli were found to be highly sensitive to methanol, resulting in a rapid response making them an ideal sensor.

Detection of residual antibiotic and sulfonamide agents in emergency slaughtered cattle (절박 도축우의 항생제 및 설파제 잔류 조사)

  • This survey was carried out to detect the residual antibiotics and sulfonamides in emergency slaughtered cattle(n=265) from slaughter houses in Kyeonggi province by EEC 4-plates method, Charm II and HPLC. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Antimicrobial substances were detected from 24 samples(9.1%) by EEC 4-plates method and the detection ratio were highest in summer(13.8%). 2. Twenty-two of the 24 positive samples were classified as sulfonamide(34.4%), TCs(31.3%), $\beta$-lactam(23.5%) and aminoglycoside(9.3%) by Charm II test. 13(59.1%) of the 22 samples contained single agent and 9 samples(40.9%) contained 2 or more agents. 3. Oxytetracycline(27.3%), penicillin G (27.3%) and sulfathiazole(18.2%) were detected in 20 from 22 samples by the HPLC and Charm II test. 4. The residual concentration of oxytetracycline, penicillin G and sulfonamide were 0.29~9.30 ppm, 0.05~9.58 ppm and 0.04~7.59 ppm, respectively and 19 samples(7.2%) were exceeded tolerance levels.

Status and Prospects of Marine Wind Observations from Geostationary and Polar-Orbiting Satellites for Tropical Cyclone Studies

  • Satellite-derived sea surface winds (SSWs) and atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) over the global ocean, particularly including the areas in and around tropical cyclones (TCs), have been provided in a real-time and continuous manner. More and better information is now derived from technologically improved multiple satellite missions and wind retrieving techniques. The status and prospects of key SSW products retrieved from scatterometers, passive microwave radiometers, synthetic aperture radar, and altimeters as well as AMVs derived by tracking features from multiple geostationary satellites are reviewed here. The quality and error characteristics, limitations, and challenges of satellite wind observations described in the literature, which need to be carefully considered to apply the observations for both operational and scientific uses, i.e., assimilation in numerical weather forecasting, are also described. Additionally, on-going efforts toward merging them, particularly for monitoring three-dimensional TC wind fields in a real-time and continuous manner and for providing global profiles of high-quality wind observations with the new mission are introduced. Future research is recommended to develop plans for providing more and better SSW and AMV products in a real-time and continuous manner from existing and new missions.

Vehicle Longitudinal Velocity Estimation on Inclined Road (경사진 노면에서의 차량의 종 속도 추정)

  • On-line and real-time information of the longitudinal velocity is the essential factor for the Advanced Vehicle Control Systems such as ABS(Anti-lock Brake System), TCS(Traction Control System), ESC (Electronic Stability Control) etc. However, the longitudinal velocity cannot be easily measured or calculated during braking maneuvering. A new algorithm is presented for the estimation of the longitudinal velocity with the measurements of the vehicle longitudinal/lateral acceleration, steering angle and yaw rate. The algorithm is designed utilizing the Extended Kalman Filter based on the 3 degree of freedom vehicle model. In order to compensate for the biased sensor signal on the inclined road, the inclined angle is also estimated. The performance of the proposed estimation algorithm is evaluated in field tests.

  • Loyalty is a bonus point that a customer earns in reward of purchasing goods of a shop or a manufacturer. The management of loyalty such as issuing, accounting, reimbursing is carried out by the loyalty system. Traditional loyalty systems were proprietary. As a result, the systems are not interoperable with each other. However, our loyalty system allows a group of merchants join together and use the same IC card to operate their own loyalty programs. Data and counters can be shared or totally isolated, using secret codes and keys. The loyalty pool system communicates with the loyalty service providers over the Internet and performs the management of loyalty in fully automated manner. This paper describes the functional architecture and internal behavior of the loyalty pool system along with the communication protocols.

The Impact of the Knowledge Management Strategic Alignment on the Innovation of Manufacturing Firms (기업전략과 지식경영 전략의 연계가 제조기업의 혁신에 미치는 영향)

  • This study empirically investigated the effects of knowledge management(KM) strategic alignment on the KM activities as well as the product and process innovation of manufacturing firms. Based on the framework, which employs the usage levels of target costing systems(TCS) and information technology(IT) infrastructure, four types of KM strategies were identified and proposed:mixed, explorative, exploitative and negative strategies. In this research, these four types of KM strategies were empirically validated. According to the results of this study, it was found that when a explorative KM strategy is aligned with a low-cost strategy, KM activities are activated and the degree of a process innovation is increased. It was observed that in the case of the alignment between a differentiation strategy and a exploitative KM strategy, both KM activities and the level of a product innovation are enhanced. The results also demonstrated that for the enhancement of both a process and a product innovation through the activation of KM activities, a mixed KM strategy must be aligned with a composite business strategy, which focuses on a low-cost as well as a differentiation strategies. Accordingly, it is concluded that the KM activities and the levels of the product and process innovation can be activated or improved with the alignment of the KM strategies and business strategies.

  • 전력 계통은 발전설비, 송전설비, 변전설비, 배전설비 등으로 크게 나눌 수 있다. 전력계통을 구성하는 이런 설비들을 원격 감시하고 제어하는 시스템을 전력자동화 시스템이라고 한다. 이런 전력자동화 시스템은 국내 전체 에너지의 수요, 공급, 수송을 제어하는 에너지 관리시스템(EMS : Energy Management System), 송전 및 변전설비의 감시제어를 담당하는 송변전소 감시제어 시스템(SCADA : Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), 배전계통의 실비관리 및 운영을 담당하는 배전자동화시스템(DAS : Distribution Automation System), 수용가의 계량기를 원격으로 읽어오는 원격검침시스템 (AMR : Automatic Meter Reading) 통으로 구성되어 있다. 국내에서 운용중인 배전자동화 시스템은 배전선로에 설치되어 있는 개폐기만을 원격 감시 및 제어 하는 보편적인 시스템이다. 한편, 2005년도 전력IT 국가 전략과제로 수행하고 있는 배전지능화 시스템 개발 과제에서는 변전소부터 배전계통과 수용가까지의 모든 전력 설비에 대한 원격감시제어가 가능한 시스템을 배전지능화 시스템이라고 정의하고 이의 개발을 추진하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 ABB, SIEMENS, GE와 같은 국외의 배전 자동화 시스템들을 소개하고, 배전지능화 시스템에서 목표로 하고 있는 GIS 기반 위에서 고 저압 배전설비를 관리하고, SCADA, DAS, GIS(Geographic Information System), AMR, TCS(Trouble Call System) 등 배전지능화 시스템의 중앙제어장치가 갖추어야 하는 주요 기능들에 대해 기술하고자 한다.

The Effects of Typhoon Initialization and Dropwindsonde Data Assimilation on Direct and Indirect Heavy Rainfall Simulation in WRF model

  • A number of heavy rainfall events on the Korean Peninsula are indirectly influenced by tropical cyclones (TCs) when they are located in southeastern China. In this study, a heavy rainfall case in the middle Korean region is selected to examine the influence of typhoon simulation performance on predictability of remote rainfall over Korea as well as direct rainfall over Taiwan. Four different numerical experiments are conducted using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, toggling on and off two different improvements on typhoon in the model initial condition (IC), which are TC bogussing initialization and dropwindsonde observation data assimilation (DA). The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory TC initialization algorithm is implemented to generate the bogused vortex instead of the initial typhoon, while the airborne observation obtained from dropwindsonde is applied by WRF Three-dimensional variational data assimilation. Results show that use of both TC initialization and DA improves predictability of TC track as well as rainfall over Korea and Taiwan. Without any of IC improvement usage, the intensity of TC is underestimated during the simulation. Using TC initialization alone improves simulation of direct rainfall but not of indirect rainfall, while using DA alone has a negative impact on the TC track forecast. This study confirms that the well-suited TC simulation over southeastern China improves remote rainfall predictability over Korea as well as TC direct rainfall over Taiwan.
