  • In order to improve the crane-hook's performance and service life, we formulate a multi-criteria shape design problem considering practical conditions. The structural weight, the displacement at specified points and the induced matrix norm of stiffness matrix are adopted as the evaluation items to be minimized. The heights and widths of cross-section are chosen as the design variables. The design variables are expressed in terms of shape functions based on the Gaussian function. For this multi-objective optimization problem with three items, we utilize a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, that is, the multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). As a common feature of obtained solutions, the side views are tapered shapes similar to those of actual crane-hook designs. The evaluation item values of the obtained designs demonstrate importance of the present optimization as well as the feasibility of the proposed optimal design approach.

  • Intense excimer laser irradiation of polymer films results in expansion and the following contraction , recovering ithe initial flat surface. The morphological dynamics is meausred directly by nanosecond time-resolved interferometry for polystyrene(PS), polyurethane, and polyimide films. The expansion proceeds with a speed of a few nm/ns , while the contraction depends upon the polymer ; very low contraction for PS, rapid 2 component shrinking for polyurethane, and rapid monotonous decay for polymide. These characteristic behavior are considered from viewpoints of interpenetrating structures of polymers, glass-rubber phase transitioni, thermal diffusion, and photothermal mechanism.

  • Novel citric acid based Ti, Nb and Ta precursors that are highly stable in the presence of water were developed. No alkoxides of Ti, Nb and Ta were utilized in the preparation, instead much less moisture-sensitive metallic Ti, NbCl5 and TaCl5 were chosen as starting chemicals for Ti, Nb and Ta, respectively. The feasibility of these chemicals as precursors is demonstrated in the powder synthesis of BaTi4O9, Y3NbO7 and LiTaO3. The water-resistant Ti precursor was employed as a new source of water-soluble Ti in the amorphous citrate method, and phase pure BaTi4O9 in powdered form was successfully synthesized at 800 ?. The Pechini-type polymerizable complex method using the water-resistant Nb and Ta precursors was applied to the synthesis of Y3NbO7 and LiTaO3, and both the powder materials in their pure form were successfully synthesized at reduced tempera-tures, viz. 500-700 ?. The remarkable retardation of hydrolysis of these water-resistant precursors is explained in terms of the partial charge model theory.

  • The excitation wavelength dependence of laser ablation dynamics of an azobenzene-containing urethane-urea copolymer film was investigated by measuring the laser fluence dependence of etch depth, transient absorbance change at each excitation wavelength, and transient absorption spectra. Moreover expansion/contraction dynamics was studied by applying nanosecond time-resolved interferometry. The threshold was determined at several excitation wavelengths from etch depth measurement, while time-integrated absorbance was obtained under excitation conditions. The photon energy required to remove the topmost of surface layer of the film did not .depend on excitation wavelength, and the penetration depth of excitation pulse dominated the etch depth. When the excitation wavelength was longer than 500 nm, permanent swelling was clearly observed but not for shorter wavelength excitation. In the latter case, photoisomerization occurred during excitation and the following photoreduction may play an important role. On the basis of the observations made in this study, a photochemical and photothermal mechanisms can explain mostly the short and long wavelength excitation results, respectively.

  • Stannite is mainly found in hypothermal ore deposits, whereas mawsonite and stannoidite occur characteristically with bornite and chalcopyrite in subvolcanic (xenothermal) ore deposits. Mawsonite always shows the replacement on the rims of stannoidite grains or along the grain boundaries of stannoidite, bornite and chalcopyrite. In the Tada mine, Japan, the following mineral assemblages of the Cu-Fe-Sn-S minerals were observed. 1) bornite-stannoidite; 2) stannoidite-chalcopyrite; 3) stannite-chalcopyrite; 4) bornite-mawsonite-stannoidite; 5) bornite-stannoidite-chalcopyrite; 6) mawsonite-stannoidite-chalcopyrite; 7) stannoidite-stannite-chalcopyrite; 8) bornite-mawsonite-stannoidite-chalcopyrite The heating and D.T.A. experimental results indicate that natural stannoidite containing 3 weight percent of zinc decomposes to bornite, stannite and chalcopyrite at above $500^{\circ}C$, whereas zinc-free synthetic stannoidite is stable up to $800^{\circ}C$. The stability temperature of zincian stannoidite depends on the zinc content. Mawsonite is stable at temperatures below $390^{\circ}C$ and decomposed to stannoidite, bornite and chalcopyrite above it. According to the sulfur fugacity determination by the electrum tarnish method the univariant assemblage of mawsonite, bornite, stannoidite and chalcopyrite requires a higher sulfur fugacity than that of bornite, stannoidite and chalcopyrite assemblage.

  • To transmit users' intentions that vary with each person, intuitive and hi-directional interactions between users and a computer are necessary. We considered these interactions by dividing them into two spaces, physical space and informational space. Informational space supports human thinking process by arranging and visualizing much information. Physical space reproduces the real world where various restrictions exist to virtual space. From the viewpoint of three aspects - contents model, kansei model and context model - we defined the style of the interaction between user and multimedia database. In this paper, for the purpose of examining the way to realize the interaction based on these models, we developed interior design coordination support system and garden coordination system, and then evaluated them.

  • Galvanic corrosion tests of Zn/steel couples were conducted in 1 M NaCl and $1M\;MgCl_2$ solutions to investigate the impact of magnesium ion on corrosion behavior of the couples. Two types of Zn/steel couples were used for measurements of open circuit potential (OCP) and galvanic current. From the results of OCP transient of Zn/steel couples, the corrosion potential in $1M\;MgCl_2$ was a more positive value than that in 1 M NaCl during the sacrificial dissolution of Zn. However, earlier increase of OCP of the couples in $1M\;MgCl_2$ solution indicates that the sacrificial dissolution rate of Zn in $1M\;MgCl_2$ was enhanced more than that in 1 M NaCl, agreeing with the results on transients of galvanic current. This result is due to that cathodic reaction on the steel surface of the Zn/steel couple was enhanced in $1M\;MgCl_2$ by the occurrence of hydrogen evolution reaction.

  • We performed distal bypass and free flap transfer in a single-stage operation to repair an extensive soft tissue defect in an ischemic foot of an 84-year-old woman. The nutrient artery of the free flap was anastomosed to the bypass graft in an end-to-side manner. Subsequently, the bypass graft became occluded on several occasions. Although intravascular and surgical interventions were performed each time, the bypass graft eventually became completely occluded. However, despite late occlusion of the nutrient artery, the free flap has remained viable and the patient is ambulatory. The time required for a transplanted free flap to become completely viable without a nutrient artery is likely longer for an ischemic foot compared with a healthy foot. However, the exact period of time required is not known. A period of month was required in our patient. We report this case to help clarify the process by which a free flap becomes viable when applied to an ischemic foot.

  • Owing to our rapidly aging society, accessibility evaluation to enhance the ease and safety of access to indoor and outdoor environments for the elderly and disabled is increasing in importance. Accessibility must be assessed not only from the general standard aspect but also in terms of physical and cognitive friendliness for users of different ages, genders, and abilities. Meanwhile, human behavior simulation has been progressing in the areas of crowd behavior analysis and emergency evacuation planning. However, in human behavior simulation, environment models represent only "as-planned" situations. In addition, a pedestrian model cannot generate the detailed articulated movements of various people of different ages and genders in the simulation. Therefore, the final goal of this research was to develop a virtual accessibility evaluation by combining realistic human behavior simulation using a digital human model (DHM) with "as-is" environment models. To achieve this goal, we developed an algorithm for generating human-like DHM walking motions, adapting its strides, turning angles, and footprints to laser-scanned 3D as-is environments including slopes and stairs. The DHM motion was generated based only on a motion-capture (MoCap) data for flat walking. Our implementation constructed as-is 3D environment models from laser-scanned point clouds of real environments and enabled a DHM to walk autonomously in various environment models. The difference in joint angles between the DHM and MoCap data was evaluated. Demonstrations of our environment modeling and walking simulation in indoor and outdoor environments including corridors, slopes, and stairs are illustrated in this study.
