Binary Nature Revealed in Circumstellar Spiral-Shell Patterns

  • With the advent of high-resolution high-sensitivity observations, spiral patterns have been revealed around several asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Such patterns can provide possible evidence for the existence of central binary stars embedded in outflowing circumstellar envelopes. It is, however, not generally recognized that the binary induced pattern, vertically extended from the orbital plane, exhibits a ring-like pattern with an inclined viewing angle. I will first review the binary-induced spiral-shell patterns on the AGB circumstellar envelopes with the effect of inclination angle with respect to the orbital plane, of which large inclination cases reveal incomplete ring-like patterns. I will describe a method of extracting such spiral-shell from the gas kinematics of an incomplete ring-like pattern to place constraints on the characteristics of the (unknown) central binary stars. This first success may open the possibility of connecting the ring-like patterns commonly found in the AGB circumstellar envelopes and in the outer parts of (pre-)planetary nebulae and pointing to the conceivable presence of central binary systems, which may give a clue for the onset of asymmetrical planetary nebulae.

항공기 지연시간을 고려한 제주국제공항 활주로 연간용량 산정 (Estimation of Annual Runway Capacity for Jeju International Airport Considering Aircraft Delays)

  • 계속되는 항공수요 증가와 국지적인 기상요인으로 제주국제공항은 우리나라 공항가운데 가장 높은 항공기 지연율을 보이고 있다. 현재의 항공수요 증가추세를 감안할 때 이러한 제주국제공항의 항공기 지연현상은 앞으로 더욱 악화되어 공항의 처리능력 한계에 다다를 것으로 예상된다. 공항의 처리능력을 가늠할 수 있는 활주로의 연간용량 산정은 장래 공항계획 수립을 위한 필수적인 작업이다. 하지만 현재 실무에서는 FAA에서 제시한 산정식을 적용하여 연간용량을 산정하고 있으나, 변수에 대한 명확한 정의가 이루어지고 있지 않아 사용자의 해석에 따라 상이한 결과값이 도출될 가능성이 있으며, 항공기의 지연이 고려되지 않는다는 점에서 실무적 제약이 내재되어 있다. 이러한 실무적 한계를 개선하기 위한 방법으로, 본 논문에서는 미시적 항공교통 시뮬레이션 모형을 활용하여 활주로를 이용하는 항공기의 평균 지연시간을 측정하고, 이를 기준으로 제주국제공항 활주로의 일일용량을 분석, 최종적으로 연간용량을 산정하는 방법을 소개하였다. 또한, 시뮬레이션 모형구축 및 검증을 위한 자료수집, 분석과정과 검증결과를 설명하였다. 제주국제공항의 일일용량 및 연간용량 분석 결과, 각각 약 460회, 약 169,000회로 산정되었다.

CONSTRAINING THE MAGNETIC FIELD IN THE ACCRETION FLOW OF LOW-LUMINOSITY ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI

  • Observations show that the accretion flows in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) probably have a two-component structure with an inner hot, optically thin, advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) and an outer truncated cool, optically thick accretion disk. As shown by Taam et al. (2012), within the framework of the disk evaporation model, the truncation radius as a function of mass accretion rate is strongly affected by including the magnetic field. We define the parameter ${\beta}$ as $p_m=B^2/8{\pi}=(1-{\beta})p_{tot}$, (where $p_{tot}=p_{gas}+p_m$, $p_{gas}$ is gas pressure and $p_m$ is magnetic pressure) to describe the strength of the magnetic field in accretion flows. It is found that an increase of the magnetic field (decreasing the value of ${\beta}$) results in a smaller truncation radius for the accretion disk. We calculate the emergent spectrum of an inner ADAF + an outer truncated accretion disk around a supermassive black hole by considering the effects of the magnetic field on the truncation radius of the accretion disk. By comparing with observations, we found that a weaker magnetic field (corresponding to a bigger value of ${\beta}$) is required to match the observed correlation between $L_{2-10keV}/L_{Edd}$ and the bolometric correction $k_{2-10keV}$, which is consistent with the physics of the accretion flow with a low mass accretion rate around a black hole.
