  • The paper presented the seismic performance of T-stiffener moment connections for use in steel moment-resisting frames. The connections were strengthened by welding the vertical and horizontal clement of the T-stiffener to the beam flange and column f1ange. Finite clement analysis and experiments were conducted to determine the behavior of T-stiffener-reinforced connections. The results of the finite element analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the T-stiffener, whose horizontal element lengthened to mitigate local stress concentrations of the beam flange on the horizontal stiffener. Full-scale specimens were also tested cyclically to study hysteresis behavior. The main parameters used were the ratio of the T-stiffener to beam strength and the shape of the horizontal element. As the length of the horizontal element increased, the deformation capacity of the connections enhanced. Likewise, all specimens behaved according to the Ramberg-Osgood curve and showed stable hysteresis behavior.

  • This study was programmed to fabricate a beam-to-column connection that is limited to a steel-welded moment connection with full-scale members, using SN steel. A cyclic seismic test was conducted of the nine specimens that were fabricated by choosing the test variable for the weld access hole geometry, connection design method, and RBS. From the test results, failure modes, the moment-drift behavior, and the strain distribution were provided. From the specimen material properties, the beam's nominal plastic flexural capacity and classified qualified connection as a special moment flame were calculated. By analyzing the skeleton part and the baushinger part, a range of strength-raising effects, and deformation ratios were provided, with which the seismic performance of the specimens were evaluated. The test results showed that the specimens eliminated their weld access holes that demonstrated higher seismic performance than the specimens' existing weld access holes, and that the WUF-W connection that was reinforced by the supplemental fillet weld around the shear tap that was fastened by five bolts demonstrated superior seismic performance.

  • The maximum butt-joint gap size in $CO_2$ laser beam welding of SAPH steel plates with different thicknesses and its bending formability were studied. In the range of the gap size$\geq$0.1mm, the optimal butt welding speed was faster than that of no gap (air gap) condition. This behaviour was independent on the difference of thickness at any combination. Also, the allowable gap size in steel plates with different thicknesses was larger than with same thicknesses. In the range of $T/T_0$(bead shape) $\geq$ 0.8, good bending formability was obtained at any combination of thickness. The formability was improved by reducing the hardness in weld bead using pre-heating process. Finally, FEM result of the laser beam welded underframe with different thicknesses was compared to that of the conventional spot welded underframe.

  • Dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15(mm) diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(KS SCM440) to carbon steel(KS S45C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond of area and H.A.Z and microstructure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat treated(PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to 100% of the S45C base metal under the condition of all heating time. Optimal welding conditions were n=2,000(rpm), $P_1=60(MPa),\;P_2=100(MPa),\;t_1=4(s),\;t_2=5(s)$ when the total upset length is 5.4 and 5.7(mm), respectively. The peak of hardness distribution of the friction welded joints can be eliminated by PWHT. Two different kinds of materials are strongly mixed to show a well-combined structure of macro-particles without any molten material and particle growth or any defects.

  • In this study, the residual stress fields of multi-pass welded were analyzed by FEA under various geometrical conditions. In order to estimate the effects of pipe geometries on residual stress distribution, welding processes of each model were performed under the same heat cycles. And then, the influence of cutting off the weld bead on the residual stress redistribution was also estimated. From the results, in the range of t/D=0.05, axial residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were linearly decreased with pipe diameter increase. On the other hand, hoop residual stresses were not influenced by them. And both axial and hoop residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were increased with pipe diameter increase. But, when t/D was smaller than 0.05, they were converged in the nearly same value. The maximum residual stresses were generated at around HAZ. It in therefore necessary to consider them in welding design, strength evaluation, and analysis of fracture characteristics.

  • On this study, $CO_2$ gas, net of Ar gas, and mixed gas in solid wire(AWS ER 70S-6) and flux cored wire(AWS E71T-1) were used to weld on Mild steel(SS400). After the progress, the status changes of the welds in Mild steel(SS400) were investigated with compositional changes. For stable experiments, welding was conducted using the automatic feeder. Radiation testing, hardness testing, chemical composition analysis and penetrated cross-section were measured. Through these experiments, shapes of penetrated cross-section, chemical composition changes, and weld defects according to the variation of welding gas were known. Weld defects and weld cross-sectional shapes by the variation of the welding voltage were also detected.

  • Weld overlay is one of the residual stress mitigation method which arrest crack. An overlay weld sued in this manner is termed a preemptive weld overlay(PWOL). PWOL was good for distribution of residual stress of dissimilar metal weld(DMW) by previous research. Because range of overlay welding is wide relatively, residual stress distribution on PWR is affected by welding sequence. In order to examine the effect of welding sequence, PWOL was applied to a specific DMW of KORI nuclear power plant by finite element analysis method. As a result, the welding direction that from nozzle to pipe is better good for residual stress distribution on PWR.

  • Steel members have advantages of resisting torsion and axial compression. In design, residual stresses at the welded joint of T-shape steel pipes are one of the most important points to be considered. In this paper, characteristics of residual stresses of welded joints are clarified by carrying out 3D non-steady heat conduction analysis and 3D thermal elastic-plastic FE-analysis. According to the results, the production mechanism of residual stresses at the welded joint of T-shape steel pipe is clarified. In this paper, circumferential stresses depended on thermal histories but axial and radial stresses were more dependent on geometrical shape than thermal histories. Residual stresses in the axial direction on the lower part of pipe member were tensile, controlled by geometrical shape. However, in case of middle part, residual stresses in all the directions were controlled by thermal histories.

  • The fracture toughness of subcritical HAZ in the hot strained weldments of two structural steels(SB 41 and SA 537) has been investigated by COD test method and metallurgical study. The obtained results are summarized as follows; 1. The hot straining embitterment of subcritical HAZ depends on the hot straining amounts of notch tip, and the transition temperature( $T_{tr}$ ) increases with the accumulated hot straining amounts(.SIGMA. vertical bar .delta.$_{t}$vertical bar). 2. The fracture toughness of subcritical HAZ depends on materials and microstructure. The transition temperature( $T_{tr}$ ) of subcritical HAZ in SB 41 is almost same as that of parent material, however in SA 537 the temperature is higher than that of parent and lower than that of transformed HAZ. 3. The subcritical HAZ in SA 537 shows a higher toughness at small amounts of hot straining (.SIGMA. vertical bar .delta. $_{t}$vertical bar<0.3mm).mm).

  • Dissimilar joining of AI 6013-T4 alloys and austenite stainless steel was carried out using friction stir welding technique. Microstructures near the weld zone and mechanical properties of the joint have been investigated. Microstructures in the stainless steel side and AI alloy were depended on the thermo-mechanical condition which they received. TEM micrographs revealed that the interface region was composed of the mixed layers of elongated stainless steel and ultra-fine grained AI alloy and intermetallic compound layer which was identified as the $Al_{4}Fe$ with hexagonal close packed structure. Mechanical properties were lower than those of 6013 AI alloy base metal, because tool inserting location was deviated to AI alloy from the butt line, which resulted in the lack of the stirring.
