Objectives : We search the contents about Bi disease in Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經), to analyze the significance of Bi disease, etiopathogenisis and pathogenesis of Bi disease, treatment of Bi disease. Methods : We find that the key feature of Bi disease is joint pain induced by impatency of Qi and blood. Exterior and interior etiological factors are involved in, such as exogenous evil of cold and dampness, emotional disorders, intemperance of taking food, dysfunction of yingqi and weiqi, strong or weak constitution, etc. Results : The important pathogenesis are invaded by exogenous evil because of deficiency, disharmony of yingqi and weiqi and disharmony of five viscera. The key points of treatments are the individual concerned therapy and climate concerned therapy, selecting the acupoint according to the differentiation of symptoms and signs. Conclusions : The combined therapy should be used such as acupuncture and moxibustion, hot application of medicine, massage, Daoyin, outside apply, etc. These supply the theory foundation for etiological factor, pathogenesis, syndrome and treatment, and to direct the diagnosis and treatment of Bi disease later generations.

Objectives: There are many unknowns surrounding Jeong-Jo's death. To better understand Jeong-Jo's death, we closely inspected his medical records from the 20 days before his death in The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄) and Seungjeongwon Ilgi (承政院日記), Understanding medical treatment before death, we can correctly trace the cause of Jeong-Jo's death. Methods: According to The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄) and Seungjeongwon Ilgi (承政院日記), we examined his medical records between June 14 and June 28 of 1800, as to the change in chief complaint, cold and heat, thirst, syndrome differentiation, the opinions of Jeong-Jo, and the opinions of doctors, The original work, The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty and Seungjeongwon Ilgi were provided by NIKH (The National Institute of Korean History). The Korean translation of The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty was also provided by NIKH. Seungjeongwon Ilgi (original work written in Chinese characters) was directly translated into Korean by the study author. Results: 1. Jeong-Jo's is likely to have died of septicemia caused by an abscess on his back. 2. The cause of Jeong-Jo's death could be stroke due to hypertension, mental stress, and 'Wha (火) disease' Conclusions: The dominant view that Jeong-Jo was murdered by poison is not likely.

Background/Aims: Aplastic anemia is defined as pancytopenia (anaemia, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia) result from aplasia of the bone marrow. Many studies have shown that survival rate of aplastic anemia is 50-60% with immunomodulation therapy. In Korea, there is a lack of research considering oriental herbal medicine with aplastic anemia. Methods: It was compared and analyzed that recently several experimental or clinical reports of oriental herbal medicine on aplastic anemia. Results and Conclusion: The oriental herb of Panax ginseng radix, Cprdonopsis pilosula radix, Astragalus membranaceus radix, Atractylodes marcrocephala. Cervi Cornu Parvum, Epimedii Herba, Boshniakiae Herba, Morindae Radix, Angelicae gigantis Radix, Cascutae Semen, Lycii Fructus, Polygoni Multiflori Radix potently stimulated hematopoietic stem cell activity, Response rate to oriental herbal medicine of aplastic anemia was 30-60% and effect rate of aplastic anemia was 73-93%, Bian zheng Lun zhi(辨證論治 treatment according to syndrome differentiation) which based on Shen xu(腎虛) is presumed to approach highest degree effect in response rate.

Clinical symptoms of herpes zoster include red rash, burning pain, tingling or extreme sensitivity in the affected area, usually limited to one side of the body. There might be a fever or a headache. The pain of acute herpes zoster may be severe, but it is usually temporary. Some of old patients are likely to develop postherpetic neuralgia. We treated a 73 year-old male patient who had severe pain and a headache after acute herpes zoster. In the point of Differentiation of Syndromes(辯證), this subject was diasgnosed as wind-heat syndrome(風熱證) and was administered Bangpungtongsung-san. For the purpose of making the pain easier, we used the western medication as well. After six days of treatment, pain and the other symptoms improved. Besides postherpetic neuralgia dissipated. Based on this experience, both oriental medicine and western medicine have a good effect on acute herpes zoster.

Objectives : Assuming That the Characteristic of Meridian System Has Been Similar to This of Electric Potentials in Human Body and That Measurements of Electric Potential at Well and Sea Points in Branches of the Twelve Meridians Will Be Representative of Measurements of the Twelve Meridians, to Measure the Electric Potentials in Healthy Volunteers(HG), Patients Diagnosed As a Cerebral Infarction(CG), a Arrhythmia(AG), a Other Intervertebral Disc Disorder(IG), and a Joint Disorder(JG), and Then to Find Out the Characteristic of Biophysical Meridian System, Finally to Compare with the Results of the Electric Potential in Those Groups. Methods : We Selected Who HG Were Diagnosed by a Blood Test, Urine Examination and Differentiation of Syndromes by Five Viscera among Volunteers, CG by CT and Wind-Syndrome Caused by Hyperactivity of the Liver-Yang, AG by EKG, CT, and Deficiency or the Heart Blood, IG by X-ray or CT and Pain in Waist, and JG by X-ray and Knee Pain. Their Electric Potential of Well and Sea Points in the Meridians Were Measured by hysiograph. Results and Conclusions : Measurements Were Analyzed by Factor Analysis, Analysis of Variance, and Logistic Regression Model, We Obtained That Most of the Results, In Conclusion, Hold Good for the Classical Meridian Doctrine.

Urticaria is classified as Eunjin in Oriental Medicine. The intrinsic causes include digestive system disorder, food poison, parasite, female reproductive health problem, nervous breakdown, and disorder of endocrine hormone. The extrinsic sources include all kinds of insect bites or stings, medications, pollen, dirt, and toxic smells. Some unknown sources also produce urticaria. The urticaria that lasts for more than six weeks, is categorized as chronic urticaria which is not very different from acute urticaria that occurs rapid but for a short period. The chronic urticaria may come every day, and its symptoms can even get worse at irregular or regular intervals. The cycle is hard to predict. It could be weeks or years. In clinical treatments, the syndromes of patient's chronic urticaria with cerebral hemorrhage have been analyzed and identified as follows: The diagnosis by asking the patient's case history showed that the root cause was retention of food resulting from dysfunction of the spleen and stomach. First, Pyeongwisan was dosed. From the syndrome differentiation with four diagnostic methods, we diagnosed the symptoms as Poong yoel (wind-heat). Then, Hyeongbangpaedocksangamibang was prescribed to get very effective results.

Objectives : Through the analyze of formative factor of time sense and the vital movement temporal rhythm in Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經). Methods : We find out the principle and methods of Chronomedicine and Health Preserving in Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經), and this finding will direct the life nurturing for later generations. We find that time sense had been established in Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經), which had yin-yang and five elements characteristic. Results : There have temporal rhythm of functions of zang-fu viscera, meridian and collateral, qi and blood. Based on the theory of correspondence between human body and natural environment, established principle of health maintenance about based on yin and yang, temporal rhythm of visceral qi. Conclusions : Established health maintenance methods based on time such as adjusting-spirit according to time, regular daily life, dietary regimen according to time, needling and moxibustion according to time. These methods will guide syndrome differentiation and therapeutic method and Medication which based on suitable time.

Blastomyces dermatitidis is a dimorphic fungus that causes the systemic pyogranulomatous disease known as blastomycosis. Blastomycosis most often involves the lungs, skin, and may involve nearly every organ in the body. It is difficult, however, to diagnose blastomycosis in the early stage of pulmonary disease because clinical manifestations are varied from subclinical infection to acute respiratory distress syndrome. Since blastomycosis is often accompanied by granulomatous inflammation in histopathologic findings, differentiation from other etiologic diseases is important. We report a case of a 45-year-old male with pulmonary blastomycosis who had been misdiagnosed with tuberculosis for 3 months.

In review of "invigorating spleen and supplementing qi" of clinical and experimental studies on malignant tumor, we obtained the conclusions as follows 1. Asthenic splenic qi is an important factor in mutation, occurrence and development of tumor. 2. The anti-tumor mechanism of "invigorating spleen and supplementing qi" is improvement of immune suveillance, controling cell proliferating period and enhancing body metabolism. 3. "Invigorating spleen and supplementing qi" is often used with "nourishing kidney" or "expelling pathogen" for treating cnacer. 4. In experimental studies, "invigorating spleen and supplementing qi" has effects on inhibiting occurrence and development of tumor, protecting mutation, inhibiting recurrence and metastasis, immune activity, enhancing metabolism, promoting bone marrow hemopoietic cell proliferation, increasing anti-tumor effect and protecting normal cells. 5. In clinical studies, "invigorating spleen and supplementing qi" has effects on prolonging the survival period of cancer patients, improving clinical symptoms and quality of life of cancer patients, degrading the side effects of western therapie(operation, chemotherapy and radiotherapy). 6. "Invigorating spleen and supplementing qi" is an extensive discipline of syndrome differentiation used to inhibit occurence, development, recurrence and metastasis.

Objectives : This study was aimed to review the trend of dementia clinical studies in Korean Oriental Medicine and to suggest better clinical studies. Method : We collected 26 papers on dementia clinical studies in the internet site OASIS using the keyword 'Dementia'. Then we analyzed them. Results : There were 26 clinical study papers that were published between 1996 and 2010. Observational studies account for 61% of total clinical studies, whereas experimental studies account for only 31%. Effects of treatment in experimental studies was evaluated mainly by MMSE-K and K-DRS. Treatment period of experimental studies was longer than 100days. Conclusions : High quality experimental studies like randomized clinical trial(RCT) and intervention studies which use syndrome differentiation(辨證) have not yet been published. It is necessary to research and develop duration of treatment effect and tools for evaluating treatment effects.
