A bidirectional DC-DC converter (BDC) is an indispensable electrical unit for the electric vehicles (EVs). High efficiency, high power density, isolation, light weight and reliability are all essential requirements for BDC. In this paper, a 3 kW BDC for the battery charger of EVs is proposed. The proposed converter consists of a half-bridge structure on the primary side and an isolation transformer and a synchronous rectifier structure on the secondary side. With this topology, minimum number of switching devices are required for bidirectional power flow between the two dc buses of EVs. The easy implementation of the synchronous rectification gives advantages in terms of efficiency, cost and flexibility. The proposed BDC achieves high efficiency when operating in both modes (step-up and step-down). A 3 kW prototype is implemented to verify theoretical analysis and the performance of the proposed converter.

In this paper, optimal control of the fuel cell and design of a high-efficiency power converter is implemented to build a high-priced fuel cell system with minimum capacity. Conventional power converter devices use a non-isolated boost converter for high efficiency while the battery is charged, and reduce its conduction loss by using MOSFETs instead of diodes. However, the efficiency of the boost converter decreases, since overshoot occurs because there is a moment when the body diode of the MOSFET is conducted during the dead time and huge loss occurs when the dead time for the maximum-power-flowing state is used in the low-power-flowing state. The method proposed in this paper is to adjust the dead time of boost and rectifier switches by predicting the power flow to meet the maximum efficiency in every load condition. After analyzing parasite components, the stability and efficiency of the high-efficiency boost converter is improved by predictive compensation of the delay component of each part, and it is proven by simulation and experience. The variation in switching delay times of each switch of the full-bridge converter is compensated by falling time compensation, a control method of PWM, and it is also proven by simulation and experience.
This paper presents a transformer-based reconfigurable synchronous boost converter. The lowest maximum power point tracking (MPPT)-input voltage and peak efficiency of the proposed boost converter, 20 mV and 88%, respectively, were achieved using a reconfigurable synchronous structure, static power loss minimization design, and efficiency boost mode change (EBMC) method. The proposed reconfigurable synchronous structure for high efficiency enables both a transformer-based self-startup mode (TSM) and an inductor-based MPPT mode (IMM) with a power PMOS switch instead of a diode. In addition, a static power loss minimization design, which was developed to reduce the leakage current of the native switch and quiescent current of the control blocks, enables a low input operation voltage. Furthermore, the proposed EBMC method is able to change the TSM into IMM with no additional time or energy loss. A prototype chip was implemented using a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and operates within an input voltage range of 9 mV to 1 V, and an output voltage range of 1 V to 3.3 V, and provides a maximum output power of 37 mW.

This paper focuses on the design and control of a new concept for wind turbines with a planetary gearbox to realize a power split. This concept, where the generated wind power is split into two parts, is to increase the utilization of the wind power and may be particularly suitable for large scale off-shore wind turbines. In order to reduce the cost of the power electronic devices, a synchronous generator, which is driven by the planetary gear, is directly connected to the power grid without electronic converter. A servo drive, which functions as the control actuator, is connected to the power grid by a power electronic converter. With small scale power electronic device, the current harmonics can also be reduced. The speed of the main shaft is controlled to track the optimal tip speed ratio. Meanwhile the speed of the synchronous generator is controlled to stay at the synchronous speed. The minimum rated power of the servo motor and the converter, is studied and discussed in this paper. Different variants of the wind turbine with a planetary gear are also compared. The controller for optimal tip speed ratio and synchronous speed tracking is given.
This study proposes a high-performance current control algorithm for a diode-bridge-type single-phase boost power factor correction (PFC) converter. The conventional asynchronous single-phase current controllers that directly control AC-type current tend to be accompanied by steady-state errors due to their poor dynamic characteristics for the transient-state, which can be attributed to bandwidth limitations and phase delays. In the proposed algorithm, an ideal current control with minimal phase delays and steady-state errors can be achieved by using a virtual DQ synchronous reference frame and by controlling the synchronous reference frame excluding the frequency component in the single-phase system. The performance of the conventional asynchronous single-phase current controller is compared with that of the proposed algorithm through simulation and experiments, and the results have confirmed the superiority of the latter.

In order to match the voltages between high voltage battery stacks and low voltage super-capacitors with a high conversion efficiency in hybrid energy sources electric vehicles (HESEVs), a high ratio bidirectional DC-DC converter with a synchronous rectification H-Bridge is proposed in this paper. The principles of high ratio step-down and step-up operations are analyzed. In terms of the bidirectional characteristic of the H-Bridge, the bidirectional synchronous rectification (SR) operation is presented without any extra hardware. Then the SR power switches can achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on and turn-off during dead time, and the power conversion efficiency is improved compared to that of the diode rectification (DR) operation, as well as the utilization of power switches. Experimental results show that the proposed converter can operate bidirectionally in the wide ratio range of 3~10, when the low voltage continuously varies between 15V and 50V. The maximum efficiencies are 94.1% in the Buck mode, and 93.6% in the Boost mode. In addition, the corresponding largest efficiency variations between SR and DR operations are 4.8% and 3.4%. This converter is suitable for use as a power interface between the battery stacks and super-capacitors in HESEVs.
Single winding self driven synchronous rectification(SWSDSR) scheme is based on an additional winding in the power transformer (auxiliary winding). It allows for maintaining the synchronous rectifiers on even when the voltage in the transformer is zero, which is impossible to do in traditional self-driven approaches. Its technique is verified to improve the efficiency by experiment. In this paper, there are compared self driven synchronous rectification(SDSR) with SWSDSR about the efficiency
In this paper, novel zero-voltage-transition(ZVT) synchronous buck converter of pulse-width-modulation(PWM) method is proposed to utilize auxiliary circuit. In this proposed scheme, designed to operate low output voltage for portable system and applied synchronous scheme to improve efficiency. Also proposed circuit is designed to do soft-switching operation in every switch. In this paper, the circuit operation is explained and analysed, and design guidelines are presented. To verify the availability of the proposed circuit, experiment and simulation is carried out.
The static frequency converter (SFC) systems are used as a method of driving large synchronous machines in many power and industrial plants. In this paper, new control algorithms of SFC systems for starting gas turbo sets are proposed for a four quadrant operation: start-up at standstill; an acceleration up to the speed of the rated voltage; field weakening to reach the rated speed; synchronization to the main alternating current (AC) source; and dynamic braking to stop safely within the rating of the synchronous machine. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms are proper and effective.

This paper presents a high speed synchronous single inductor dual output boost converter using Type-III compensation for power management in smart devices. Maintaining multiple outputs from a single inductor is becoming very important because of inductor the sizes. The uses of high switching frequency, inductor and capacitor sizes are reduced. Owing to synchronous rectification this kind of converter is suitable for SoC. The phase is controlled in time sharing manner for each output. The controller used here is Type-III, which ensures quick settling time and high stability. The outputs are stable within $58{\mu}s$. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a better overall performance. The input voltage is 1.8V, switching frequency is 5MHz, and the inductor used is 600nH. The output voltages and powers are 2.6V& 3.3V and 147mW &, 230mW respectively.
