  • The computational fluid dynamics was carried out to evaluate turbulent models on the swirling flow of a gun-type gas burner(GTGB) according to the mesh size. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used for a steady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional numerical analysis. In consequence, the velocity magnitude from the exit of a GTGB and the flowrate predicted by the turbulent models of MP k-${\varepsilon}$, Realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ and RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ agree with the results measured by an experiment very well. Moreover, the turbulent kinetic energy predicted by the turbulent model of standard k-${\varepsilon}$ with mesh type C only agrees with the experimental result very well along the radial distance. On the other hand, the detailed prediction of the information of swirling flow field near the exit of a GTGB at least needs a CFD analysis using a fairly large-sized mesh such as a mesh type C.

  • The flow and combustion patterns have been investigated inside the gasoline engine cylinder with the swirl or tumble flow, whereas the air flow characteristics, which are generated in the part of intake system before entering into the intake manifold, have not been known completely. It is necessary to analyze the flow field in the intake system consisting of air rater, throttle valve and intake manifold. The throttle valve, used to control the intake air flow rate, is important because it makes various mass flow rate and flow patterns. Three-dimen-sional How characteristics such as velocities, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stresses are measured by the hot wire anemometer at the exit of the throttle valve with the variation in the valve opening angle($15^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$) and the Reynolds numbers (45000, 70000 and 140000). There are a lot of changes in flow characteristics at $75^{\circ}$ due to the large recirculation flow comparing with those of the other cases, and the streamwise velocity is especially enforced strongly below the valve shaft. The other component velocities are relatively large near the centerline parallel to the valve shaft. The effects of the Reynolds number on the flow field are not severe.

  • Three dimensional numerical calculation carried out to investigate the eccentricity effect of intake valve on the in-cylinder flow fields for the intake stroke and the compression stroke. During the intake stroke, a corner vortex in the vicinity of the valve exit interacted strongly with a toroidal vortex in the case of axisymmetric valve. But a weak interaction between the corner vortex and the toroidal vortex occurred due to the eccentricity of the valve in the narrow region between valve and cylinder wall in the case of offset valve. During the compression stroke, it was found that a solid body rotation was maintained in the radial-circumferential plane in the case of axisymmetric valve. But a weak secondary vortex was formed in the radial-circumferntial plane in the case of offset valve, because of the interaction between swirl flows and inward flows towards cylinder axis. The calculated turbulence intensity presented a similar trend with the experiental results but, in spite of using the modified k-.epsilon. model, it was found that the qualitative difference between the numerical results and experimental results was large in the region where the velocity gradient is substantial.

  • In this paper, the heat loss to the constant volume vessel wall was investigated using instantaneous heat flux sensor, schlieren visualization, pressure rise curve. And the heat loss characteristics of plasma jet ignition were compared with conventional spark ignition. In case of plasma jet ignition, the flame kernel moves toward the center of combustion vessel in the initial period of combustion, and the flame surface spread out to the vessel wall. However, in case of conventional spark ignition, the flame surface contact with combustion vessel wall in the initial period of combustion. As a result, heat loss in the combustion duration for conventional spark ignition increase faster than that of plasma jet ignition. And the combustion enhancement rate of plasma jet ignition is higher than that of conventional spark ignition, and it was found that the heat loss rate is inversely proportional to the combustion enhancement rate.

  • The numerical study on behavior of impinging spray from high-pressure swirl injector under various ambient temperatures was performed by using spray vaporization model and spray-wall impingement model implemented in modified KIVA code, and these spray models were estimated by comparison with experimental results. To compute the spray-wall impingement process, the Gosman model, which is based on the droplet behavior after impingement determined by experimental correlations, was used. The modified Abramzon and Sirignano model, that includes the effects of variable thermodynamic properties and non-unitary Lewis number in the gas film, was adapted for spray vaporization process. The exciplex fluorescence measurements were also conducted for comparison. The experimental and numerical analysis were carried out at the ambient pressures of 0.1 MPa and at the ambient temperature of 293 K and 473 K, and the spray characteristics, such as spray-wall impingement process, gas velocity field, SMD and vapor concentration, were acquired. It was found that the impinging spray develops active and SMD is small at vaporization conditions.

  • In this study, combustion fields of the end-burning hybrid combustor with tangential oxidizer injectors are examined. Momentum ratio of oxidizer is used as a main parameter to analyse the combustion efficiency with temperature, pressure, swirl velocity and mixture fraction field. It was found that as momentum ratio decreases the overall combustion efficiency is enhanced with the pressure field being insensitive to momentum ratio keeping quasi-uniform distribution. Irrespective to the momentum ratio, annular hot region commonly occurred in the upper combustion chamber where this phenomenon was left for a future improvement to be followed.

  • A spray-wall impingement process of a hollow-cone fuel spray from the high-pressure swirl injector in the Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine were experimented and calculated at various wall geometries. The Linearized Instability Sheet Atomization (LISA) & the Aerodynamically Progressed Taylor Analogy Breakup (APTAB) model and the Gosman model were applied to model the breakup and the wall impingement process of the hollow-cone fuel spray. The numerical modelings were implemented in the modified KIVA code. The calculation results of spray characteristics, such as a spray development process and a radial distance after wall impingement, compared with the experimental results by the Laser Induced Exciplex Fluorescence (LIEF) technique. The droplet size distribution and the ambient gas velocity field, which are generally difficult to obtain by the experimental methods, were also calculated and discussed. It was found that the radial distance after wall impingement and Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) decreased with increasing a cavity angle.

  • Analysis and control of intake charge motion such as swirl and tumble are very important factors in improving the gasoline engine performance. In this paper, single-frame PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) is used to investigate intake tumble patterns in a steady flow test rig of gasoline engine with dual-intake-valve and pent-roof combustion chamber. Intake tumble pattern is quantified in accordance with blockage ratio of TIV (tumble intensifying valve) with single- frame PTv.The view of the instantaneous 2-D velocity field gives a realistic understanding of in-cylinder flow field. Thus it is confirmed that PTV is a effective tool in engine design. In conventional port, two tumble structures appear clearly, and the larger one is observed under the exhaust valve side and the smaller is right below the intake valve side. The larger vorticity is observed in TIV port, thus it is concluded that TIV have an effect on intensified tumble motion in cylinder flow.

  • The spray characteristics according to the recess length of the GCSC injector and the change of momentum flux ratio(MFR) of the gas and the liquid have been examined through high pressure cold flow test using a high pressure chamber. The liquid in this experiment was water, and the gas was nitrogen. The spray images were taken by a back-lit strobe imaging technique. Results showed that the spray was a wide hollow cone at the lower MFR(liquid velocity was fixed) and the spray became a narrow solid cone as the MFR was increased. And the injector with short recess length produced a narrow solid cone at the higher MFR.

  • The present study has been carried out to analyze the flow characteristics of a heat recovery steam generator with the change of inlet flow conditions by using numerical flow analysis. The inlet of HRSG corresponds the outlet of gas turbine exit and the flow after gas turbine has strong swirl flow and turbulence. The inlet flow condition of HRSG should be included the exit flow characteristics of gas turbine. The present numerical analysis adopted the flow analysis result of gas turbine exit flow as a inlet flow condition of HRSG analysis. The computational flow analysis result of gas turbine exit shows that the maximum axial velocity appears near circular duct wall and the maximum turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate exist relatively higher gradient region of axial velocity. The comparison of flow analysis will be executed with change of inlet turbulent flow condition. The first case is using the inlet turbulent properties from the result of computational analysis of gas turbine exit flow, and the second case is using the assumed turbulent intensity with the magnitude proportional to the velocity magnitude and length scale. The computational results of flow characteristics for two cases show great difference especially in the velocity field and turbulent properties. The main conclusion of the present study is that the flow inlet condition of HRSG should be included the turbulent properties for the accurate computational result of flow analysis.
