This paper is the first of 2 companion papers which investigate in-cylinder swirl generation characteristics in helical port engine with wide valve angle. Two wide valve-angle engines, which are same ones and have slightly different rig swirl number, were used to compare the characteristics of cylinder-flow. One intake port is deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field during intake stroke. The results show that the intake flow component passing through valve area near the cylinder wall is not negligible in helical port engine with wide valve angle contrary to conventional one. The effect of this velocity component on in-cylinder increases as the swirl ratio rises and intake process progresses. Consequently, this component interferes the formation of in-cylinder swirl flow resulting in lower actual swirl.

Burner of Flat Flame type expects the uniform flame distribution and NOx reduction. The characteristics of Flat Flame Burner become different according to swirl number in the burner throat. Experiments were focused on swirl effect by four types of swirler with different swirl numbers (0, 0.26, 0.6 and 1.24). It shows many different flow patterns according to swirl number using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method. The flow of burner with swirler is recirculated by pressure difference between its center and outside. Recirculated air makes stable in flame, and reduced pollutant gas. In case of swirl number 0, main flow passes through axial direction. As swirl number increased, The backward flow develops in the center part of burner and Flow gas recirculates. This is caused by radial flow momentum becomes larger than axial flow by swirled air and the pressure at center drops against surrounding. As swirl number increases, the radial and axial velocity was confirmed to be larger than low swirl numbers. And turbulence intensity have similar pattern. The CTRZ(Central Toroidal Recirculation Zone) is shown evidently when y/D=1 and S=1.24. The boundary-layer between main flow and recirculated flow is shown that the width is seen to be decreased as swirl number increased.

A lot study of convection heat transfer on internal flow has been extensively conducted in the past decades using of high specific surface area, increasing heat transfer coefficient, swirling flow and improving the transport properties. This study concerned with the application of a tangential slot swirl generator for improving heat transfer in a horizontal circular copper tube. The Al particles(about $100{\sim}130{\mu}m$) was employed for this experimental work. 3D PIV(particle image velocimetry) technique has employed to measure velocity profiles of Al particles with and without swirl flow. The copper tube is heated uniformly by winding of a heating coil for heat transfer work, having a resistance of 9 ohm per meter. Experiments are performed in the Reynolds number range of 6,800~12,100 with swirl and without swirl using Al particles. Experimental data for comparison of Nusselt number is presented that of with swirl and without swirl along the test tube for the Reynolds numbers. The Nusselt number is improved with increasing of Reynolds numbers or swirl intensities along the test tube. The Nusselt number with swirl flow is about 60.0% to 119.0% higher than that obtained by the Dittus-Boelter equation.
A general purpose program for the analysis of flows in a gas turbine combustor is developed. The program uses non-staggered grids based on finite volume method and the cartesian velocities as primitive variables. A flow inside the C-type diffuser is simulated to check the boundary fitted coordinate. The velocity profiles at cross section agree well with experimental results. A turbulent diffusion flame behind a bluff body is simulated for the combustion simulation. Simulated results show good agreement with experimental data. Finally, a turbulent flow with swirl in a gas turbine combustor was simulated. The results show two recirculating region and simulated velocity fields agree well with experimental data. The distance between two recirculating regions becomes shorter as swirl angle increases. Swirl angle changes angular momentum and streamlines in flow fields.
The Objective of this study is to investigate the effect of internal swiller angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio of nozzle on spray characteristics for application of spray system in micro fabrication process. The macro-spray characterictics such as the spray angle and breakup process were obtained by photographs illustrating atomization. The micro-spray characteristics such as droplet size and axial velocity were measured by using PDA with swirler angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio. The swiller angles were $13.5^{\circ},\;27^{\circ},\;and\;40.5^{\circ}$. The swirl chamber aspect ratios were 1.2, 1.6, and 2.0. It was found that the smaller swirl chamber aspect ratio was, the larger axial velocity and drop size were.
The Twin-fluid Swirl Nozzles are used in many parts of the industry to produce homogeneous spray. This study is to investigate the effects of outer air swiller and inner water swiller on atomization of liquid.. The experiment was carried out with increasing air-flow rate at constant liquid-flow rate and with changing outer air swiller angle and inner water swiller angle. A Particle Dynamics Analyzer(PDA) was used to measure drop size, mean and ms values of axial velocity, number density and Sauter mean diameter(SMD). The axial mean velocity and SMD of droplets were measured along the center line and radial directions. It was found that the higher air flow-rate resulted in the smaller Sauter mean diameter of liquid spray and the higher axial mean velocity of droplets. This experimental results will be conveniently used for the preliminary design stage of twin-fluid nozzle development.
Fluid properties which are most commonly used to evaluate spray atomization characteristics, are important because they affect velocity and size distribution of droplets. The purpose of this study was to incorporate the significant characteristics in atomization process of industrial etching spray and how each of them affects the design of precise pressure-swirl nozzles. The experiment was carried out with different viscosity and density of fluid. The macro characteristics of liquid spray, such as the spray angle and shape were captured by PMAS and the micro characteristics of liquid spray, such as droplet size and velocity were obtained by PDA. The mean velocity and SMD of droplets were measured along axial and radial direction. It was found that the higher viscosity and density resulted in the larger SMD and the lower mean velocity of droplets.
Spacer grid with mixing vane had been widely used in nuclear reactor core. One of the main feather of spacer grid with mixing vane was that strong swirl flow was formed after the spacer grid. The swirl flow not only changed the bubble generation in the near wall field, but also affected the bubble behaviors in the center region of the subchannel. The interaction between bubble and the swirl flow was one of the basic phenomena for the two phase flow modeling in fuel assembly. To obatin better understanding on the bubble behaviors in swirl flow, full three dimension numerical simulations were conducted in the present paper. The swirl flow was assumed in the cylindral calculation domain. The bubble interface was captured by Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The properties of saturated water and steam at different pressure were applied in the simulation. The bubble trajectory, motion, shape and force were obtained based on the bubble parameters captured by VOF. The simulation cases in the present study included single bubble with different size, at different angular velocity conditions and at different pressure conditions. The results indicated that bubble migrated to the center in swirl flow with spiral motion type. The lateral migration was mainly related to shear stress magnitude and bubble size. The bubble moved toward the center with high velocity when the swirl magnitude was high. The largest bubble had the highest lateral migration velocity in the present study range. The effect of pressure was small when bubble size was the same. The prelimenery simulation result would be beneficial for better understanding complex two phase flow phenomena in fuel assembly with spacer grid.

Swirling flows inside a swirl mixing chamber are investigated for simple configuration where swirl is produced by a tangential entry type swirl generator. The flow downstream of the swirl generator has been quantified by measurements two velocity components and their corresponding mean values along axial and radial direction using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). The mass flow rate of the tangential entry is increased in order to study their effect on the flow field. From the measurement profile of velocity and vorticity, flow mixing characteristics in a swirl mixing chamber are evaluated.

Flow characteristics of a round jet with swirl number of 0.17 have been investigated using a hot -wire anemometry in the initial region within 10D(exit diameter). Swirl effects were observed by comparing centerline flow characteristics, similarities and turbulent budgets of a swirl jet and a free jet, respectively. To obtain similarity of the radial profiles mean velocity and higher moments were measured at the vertical pl anes, located at 2.5, 5.0, 7.5D, 10D, respectively. The centerline velocity characteristics were also measured. It is turned out that similarities of mean and Reynolds stress are established. The jet boundary has wider width than that of a free jet and the shear stress also becomes stronger. In addition the centerline decay becomes faster than that of the free jet, indicating that the swirl induces more entrainment in the initial region of the swirl Jet by transferring the axial mean kinetic energy into the swirl energy and, therefore, has wider boundary, compared with that of free jet.
