Combustion and fuel distribution characteristics of heavy duty engine with the liquid phase LPG injection(LPLI) were studied in a single cylinder engine, Swirl ratio were varied between 1.2, 2.3, and 3.4 following Ricardo swirl number(Rs) definition, Rs=2.3 showed the best results with lower cycle-by-cycle variation and shorter burning duration in the lean region while strong swirl(Rs=3.4) made these worse for combustion enhancement. Excessive swirl resulted in reverse effects due to high heat transfer and initial flame kernel quenching. Fuel injection timings were categorized with open valve injection(OVI) and closed valve injection(CVI). Open valve injection showed shorter combustion duration and extended lean limit. The formation of rich mixture in the spark plug vicinity was achieved by open valve injection. With higher swirl strength(Rs=3.4) and open valve injection, the cloud of fuel followed the flow direction and the radial air/fuel mixing was limited by strong swirl flow. It was expected that axial stratification was maintained with open-valve injection if the radial component of the swirling motion was stronger than the axial components. The axial fuel stratification and concentration were sensitive to fuel injection timing in case of Rs=3.4 while those were relatively independent of the injection timing in case of Rs=2.3.

Spray angle of dual swirl injector is established according to the velocity ratio at orifice exit. Due to the internal mixing at recess and lack of correlation for the combined two fluid injection, prediction of spray angle is very difficult. This study deal with experimental work and numerical simulation on spray angle with different recess length. Among the multiphase flow models, the VOF model was selected to simulate the spray angle. Feasibility of numerical analysis are confirmed by comparing the results with the experimental data, and the effect of recess on spray angle are analyzed for single and combined spray case.
The stability of a rotor-bearing system supported by swirl-controlled hybrid journal bearing with pair-type angled injection orifices is investigated for improvement of the whirl frequency ratio by allowing effective control of the tangential flow inside the bearing clearance, i.e., by achieving more freedom in controlling strength and direction of the supply tangential flow inside the bearing clearance. It is suggested that the system instability can be improved through the change of bearing dynamic characteristic parameters with the swirl control. The orifice diameter $d_0$ and recess injection angle $\alpha$ along with combinations of swirl/anti-swirl supply pressures and directions (3.0~3.0 MPa, 4.0~2.0 MPa, 2.0~4.0 MPa) are selected for design parameters for swirl-controlled effective factors dependent on journal speeds (3000, 9000, 15000, 21000 rpm). It has been found that the orifice diameter $d_0$ shows strong effects on effective maneuverability of direct-stiffness and direct damping values, while recess injection angle $\alpha$ results in substantial effects on the magnitude and direction of cross-stiffness. Specifically, recess injection parameters which are functions of angle of orifice feeding flow and recess dimensions showed very feasible effect on the stability control of swirl-controlled rotor-bearing system.

Experimental and numerical studies have been done to examine the effects of excess air ratio and tertiary air swirl number on the formation characteristics of NOx in a pilot scale combustor adopting a multi-air staged burner. In numerical calculation the mathematical models for turbulence, radiation and nitric oxide chemistry were taken into account. The radiative transfer equation was solved using the discrete ordinates method with the weighted sum of gray gases model. In the NOx chemistry model, the chemical reaction rates for thermal and prompt NOx were statistically averaged using a probability density function. The results were validated by comparison with measurements. For the experiment, a 0.2 MW pilot multi-staged air burner has been designed and fabricated. Using the numerical simulation developed here, a variation of thermal and prompt NOx formation was predicted by changing the excess air ratio and tertiary air swirl number. As the excess air ratio increased up to 1.9, the formation of the total as well as thermal NOx at exit increased while the prompt NOx decreased. The formation of thermal NOx was more affected by concentration of $O_2$ and $N_2$ than gas temperature. When the tertiary air swirl number increased, the formation of the total as well as the prompt NOx slightly decreased.

In this study, the flow and combustion characteristics of flat flame burner with twirler were investigated. There are several factors that define the characteristics of burner. Among them, the experiments was focused on swirl effect by four types of twirler in terms of flow structure, distribution of temperature and emission characteristics. In PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) experiment, the less of swirl number, axial flow is dominant at the center. As swirl number increases, the flow develops along the burner tile and backward flow becomes stronger at center. From the combustion characteristics, as long as combustion load increases, blow-off limit was improved. But at the higher swirl number, the limit is decreased. At swirl number 0, the temperature is shown typical distribution of long flame burner. but swirl number increases, the temperature distribution is uniform in front of round tile. Therefore, the temperature distribution is coincided with flow structure. As excess air ratio increases, NO concentrations are high. But high swirl number gives rise to become low NO concentrations. The flame characteristics are comprised in wrinkled laminar-flame regime according to turbulence Reynolds number(Rel) and Damkohler number(Da).
For two engine design parameters; compression ratio and intake swirl ratio, measurement of concentrations of hydrocarbon species has been made as a function of various air-fuel ratio in order to investigate the ozone formation of HC emissions from LPG fuel. Higher compression ratio gave lower SR values due to larger aIkan species and higher BSR values because of larger NMHC generation. Swirl ratio did not affect HC emissions and ozone formation. For ${\lambda}=1.1{\sim}1.2$, higher SR values resulted from the species of aIken which has higher MIRs were highly produced. Leaner mixture showed lower SR values due to the increase of the aIkan which has a lower MIR.
Experiments were conducted in a large-scale Ward-type tornado simulator to study tornado-like vortices. Both flow velocities and the pressures at the surface beneath the vortices were measured. An interpretation of these measurements enabled an assessment of the mean flow field as well as the mean and fluctuating characteristics of the surface pressure deficit, which is a manifestation of the flow fluctuation aloft. An emphasis was placed on the effect of the aspect ratio of the tornado simulator on the characteristics of the simulated flow and the corresponding surface pressure deficit, especially the evolution of these characteristics due to the transition of the flow from a single-celled vortex to a two-celled vortex with increasing swirl ratio.

Natural gas is one of the promising alternative fuels because of the abundant deposits and the cleanness of emission gas. CNG has a lot of merits except lower burning speed has a slow disadvantage. One way to overcome the disadvantage is to raise a turbulence intensity. We give various intake for changing turbulence intensity in the cylinder by three kinds of swirl control valve with a way to raise a turbulence intensity. In the present study, a $1.8\ell$ conventional gasoline engine is modified to use a CNG as a fuel instead of gasoline. We try to virify combustion and emission characteristics in each engine parameters. Parameters of experimentation are equivalence ratio, spark timing and intake flow change. The results of this study are as swirl flows. In the case of adding swirl flow, burning speed and torque are increased. But NOx and THC concentration are increased a little respectively.

Gas flow characteristics within the cylinder is important factors in impoving lean combustion stability. This paper shows the effects of various flow fields generated by a swirl control valve(SCV) on combustion process in a 4-valve spark ignition engine. An impulse swirl/tumble meter was used to elucidation the steady-state flow characteristics, and a rotating grating type LDV was developed to measure the mean velocity and tunbulence intensity in relation to the crank angle. These methodologies were applied to clarify the correlation between gas flow characteristics and combustion stability at a lean air fuel ratio. An analysis of the correlation revealed the gas flow conditions required to optimize a lean-burn system.
The objective of this research is to determine generally applicable design principles for the development of internally staged combustion devices. Utilizing a triple annulus combustor, air staged commercial propane flame configuration are studied. For this triple air staged combustor, the angular momentum weighted by it's swirl number and air distribution ratio was observed to be the critical criteria. An internal recirculation zone which develops on the centerline of the flame immediately downstream of the burner entraps the fuel into a fuel rich eddy. Then sufficient heat must he transferred from the flame via radiation to the chamber heat transfer surfaces, such that when the second air is introduced, peak flame temperatures are suppressed. It is experimentally found out that the total NOx emission level in this type of burner is lower than 0.75g/kg.
