  • The spray structures and distribution characteristics of liquid and vapor phases in non-evaporating and evaporating Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) fuel sprays were investigated using Laser Induced Exciplex Fluorescence (LIEF) technique. Dopants were 2% fluorobenzene and 9% DEMA (diethyl-methyl-amine) in 89% solution of hexane by volume. In order to study internal structure of the spray, droplet size and velocity under non-evaporating condition were measured by Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA). Liquid and vapor phases were visualized at different moments after the start of injection. Experimental results showed that the spray could be divided into two regions by the fluorescence intensity of liquid phase: cone and mixing regions. Moreover, vortex flow of vapor phase was found in the mixing region. About 5㎛ diameter droplets were mostly distributed in the vortex flow region. Higher concentration of vapor phase due to vaporization of these droplets was distributed in this region. Particularly, higher concentration of vapor phase and lower one were balanced within the measurement area at 2ms after the start of injection.

  • Supercharging system was adopted to investigate the influence of boost pressure on operating range and exhaust emissions by using a supercharger at low temperature diesel combustion (LTC) condition in a 5-cylinder 2.7 L direct injection diesel engine. The experimental parameters such as injection quantity, injection timing, injection pressure and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate were varied to find maximum operating range in LTC condition. As a result of adopting increased boost pressure in LTC, wider operating range was achieved compared with naturally aspirated condition due to increased mixing intensity. Increased boost pressure resulted in lower hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions due to increased swirl rate and mixing intensity, which induced complete combustion. Moreover, increased boost pressure in LTC resulted in much lower soot emissions compared with high speed direct injection (HSDI) condition.

  • During the past five decades or so, the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow have been studied extensively because of its great technological and scientific importance. It is well known that the swirling flow improves heat transfer in duct flow. The reason for this is due to the effect of streamline curvature associated with the tangential velocity component. Although many studies have been carried out to investigate the characteristics of the swirling flow in a circular tube. The experimental methods for measuring the velocity components are by hot-wire or LDV (Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry) measuring single point velocity so far. The present study was aimed to analyse the flow characteristics of swirling flow such as time-mean velocity vector, local velocity turbulence intensity and turbulence kinetic energy by using PIV(Particle-Image Velocimetry). The experiment was carried out for four Reynold numbers $1.0\times10^{4}$, $1.5\times10^{4}$, $2.0\times10^{4}$ and $2.5\times10^{4}$ of the measuring area.

  • Two-dimensional, angle-resolved LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) measurements of the turbulent rotating flow field in a confined cylinder have been performed. The configurations of interest are flows between a rotating upper disk with a rod attached by a disk or impeller($\theta$ = 45$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$) and a stationary lower disk in a confined cylinder. The mean flow velocity as well as the turbulent intensity of the flow field have been measured. The results show that the flow is strongly dependent on the position of the impellers or the disk, negligibly affected by the Reynolds number in turbulent flow. It is observed that the mixing effect of the axial flow impeller($\theta$ = 45$^{\circ}$) is better than that of the radial flow impeller($\theta$ = 90$^{\circ}$) or a disk.

  • In order to design a compact urea selective catalytic reduction system, numerical simulation was conducted by computational fluid dynamics tool. A swirl type static mixer and a mixing chamber were considered as mixing units in the system. It had great influence on flow characteristics and urea decomposition into ammonia. The mixer caused flow recirculation and high level of turbulence intensity, and the chamber increased residence time of urea-water-solution injected. Because of those effects, reaction rates of urea decomposition were enhanced in the region. When those mixing units were combined, it showed the maximum because the recirculation zone was significantly developed. $NH_3$ conversion was maximized in the zone due to widely distributed turbulence intensity and high value of uniformity index. It caused improvement of $NO_x$ reduction efficiency of the system. It was possible to reduce 55% length of the chamber and connecting pipe without decrease of $NO_x$ reduction efficiency.

  • The three-dimensional numerical analysis for in-cylinder flow of four-valve engine without intake port has been successfully computed. These computations have been performed using technique of the general coordinate transformation based on the finite-volume method and body-fitted non-orthogenal grids using staggered control volume and covariant variable as dependent one. Computations are started at intake valve opening and are carried through top-dead-center of compression. A k-$\varepsilon$model is used to represent turbulent transport of momentum. The principal study is the evolution of interaction between mean flow and turbulence and of the role of swirl and tumble in generating near TDC turbulence. Results for three different inlet flow configuration are presented. From these results, complex flow pattern may be effective for promoting combustion in spark-ignition engines and kinetic energy of mean flow near TDC is well converted into turbulent kinetic energy.

  • It is well known that the stratified charge combustion has many kind of advantages to combustion characteristics, such as higher thermal efficiency and less CO, NOx levels than conventional homogeneous mixture combustion. Although this combustion can be caused low fuel consumption, it is produced the high unburned hydrocarbon and soot levels because of different equivalence ratio in the combustion chamber. Moreover it has a lot of possibility of low output and misfire if the mixture gas would not be in existence around the spark plug. In this paper, fundamental studies for stratified combustion were carried out using a constant volume combustion chamber. The effect of locally mixture gas distribution according to control the direct injection and premixed injection in the chamber were examined experimentally. In addition, the effects of turbulence on stratified charge combustion process were observed by schlieren photography.

  • A model engine having a flat cylinder head and a piston face and an off-center intake valve is investigated in this analysis. Calculation domain is confined to the half of the cylinder with swirl free inlet velocity condition. Due to the absence of measured inlet conditions, the inlet flowrates during induction period are calculated from overall mass and energy conservation requirements. Finite difference equation for velocity and pressure were solved by modified SIMPLER algorithm, standard k-$\varepsilon$turbulence model and hybrid scheme. From the result of prediction, dimensionless velocity distribution and turbulence intensities are investigated at each crank angle.

  • Coal-burning utilities are facing a major NOx control compliance challenge due to the heavy emission regulation. In response to this challenge, some applicative technologies to effectively reduce NOx are developed and applied in the pulverized coal power plants. One of these is low NOx burner(LNB) equipped with multi-staged air register. In this study, NOx emission rate and flame shapes are investigated with secondary and tertiary air flow conditions in air staged coal burner, and the optimal windows of flow conditions to minimize NOx emission rate are found out. The test conditions treated in this study are the flow rate, swirl direction and intensity and throat injection velocity of secondary and tertiary air.

  • Two measurement techniques of droplet sizing, an imaging technique(PMAS) and a phase-Doppler measurement technique (PDPA), have been compared using a water spray from a pressurized-type swirl nozzle. The result showed that SMD measured by PDPA was larger than that measured by PMAS by about 40 %. Such discrepancy of SMD could be explained by the fact that the light signal intensity used by PDPA can be biased towards larger particles. On the other hand there could be lower opportunity to capture the images of the large particles with PMAS, since the large particles could be out of sight due to their high speed.
