A PIV Measurement on Flow Characteristics of Intakes within a Sump in a Pump Station (펌프장의 흡입수조내 흡입관의 유동특성에 관한 PIV 측정)

  • The head-capacity curves for pumps developed by the pump manufacturer are based on tests of a single pump operating in a semi-infinite pool with no nearby walls or floors and no stray currents, Hence, flow into the Pump suction is symmetrical with no vortices or swirling. Pump station designers rely on these curves to define the operating conditions for the pump selected. But various constraints such as size, cost, and limitations on storage time require walls, floors, and pump intakes to be close proximity to each other. From this background, the authors are carrying out a systematic study on the flow characteristics of intakes within a sump found in pump stations. Model pump intake basin is designed and PIV is adopted as a measuring tool to capture the instantaneous flow patterns. Special attention is paid to investigate the flow patterns near the free surface, side-wall and back-wall due to different clearances from back-wall to vertical in take pipe. Moreover, the locations and vorticities of the various types of vortices that were found in the examinations are discussed.

  • The engine combustion is one of the most important processes affecting performance and emissions. One effective way to improve the engine combustion is to control the motion of the charge inside a cylinder by means of optimum induction system design, because the flame speed is mainly determined by the turbulence at compression(TDC) process in S.I. engine. It is believed that the tumble and swirl motion generated during intake stroke breaks down into small-scale turbulence in the compression stroke of the cycle. However, the exact nature of this relationship is not well known. This paper describes the tumble flow measurements inside the cylinder of a 4-valve S.I. engine using laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) under motoring(non-firing) conditions. This is conducted on an optically assesed single cylinder research engine under motored conditions at an engine speed of 1000rpm. Three different cylinder head intake port configurations are studied to develop a better understanding the tumble flow generation, development, and breakdown mechanisms.

Therefore, flow into the pump intake is with no vortices or swirling. However, pump station designers relying on these curves to define the operating conditions for the pump selected sometimes meet the reductions of capacity and efficiency, as well as the increase of vibration and additional noise, which were caused by air-entered flow in the pump station. From this background, the authors are carrying out a systematic study on the flow characteristics of intakes within a sump of pump station model. Multi-intake sump model with anti-submerged vortex device basin is designed and the characteristics of submerged vortex is investigated in the flow field by numerical simulation. In this study, a commercial CFD code is used to predict the vortex generation in the pump station accurately. The analysed results by CFD show that the vortex structure and effect of anti-submerged vortex device are different at each pump intake channel.

  • The development of high-pressure sub-scale combustion chambers is described. A total of four high-pressure sub-scale combustion chambers having either a detachable structure of the mixing head and the chamber or a single welded regenerative cooling structure have been developed. The sub-scale combustion chambers have a chamber pressure of 70 bar and propellant mass flow rate of 5.1~9.1 kg/s. The propellant mass flow rate and the recess number of the injector were changed for the improvement of combustion performance and they were validated through hot firing tests. The design and manufacturing techniques of regenerative cooling channel and film cooling to be applied to the full-scale combustion chamber were adopted through the present development and verified.

  • This paper describes an improved design model that can be used to configure a non-contact pneumatic device to turn a large sheet at the in-line system. For rotational moving in the conveyor system, the conventional method is to turn the system itself. The improved non-contact pick-up system mainly uses 8 pairs of L-shaped latches and 12 swirl type heads. It is positioned above the upward air flow table. This system performs the non-contact gripping and side-edge contact support in the vertical and rotational directions to hold the self-weight of a large flat sheet. A non-contact air head can exert a sufficient gripping ability at 4N lower than the standard working pressure. The side latches support 60% of the lifting force required. Through structural and flow analysis, the working conditions were simultaneously considered in accordance with the deflection and flatness of the glass.

  • Conceptual design results of a thrust chamber for a 7 tonf-class liquid rocket engine of KSLV-II 3rd stage were described. The engine system for KSLV-II 3rd stage is pump-fed system, the thrust chamber has vacuum thrust of 6.9 tonf, vacuum specific impulse of 336.9 sec, chamber pressure of 70 bar, nozzle expansion ratio of 94.5, total propellant mass flow rate of 20.5 kg/s, mixture ratio(O/F) of 2.45. The thrust chamber consists of mixing head with 90 coaxial swirl injectors and regeneratively combustion chamber cooled by kerosene.

Effect of Combustion Chamber Design on Combustion Stability Characteristics of a Full-scale Gas Generator (연소실 설계에 따른 실물형 가스발생기의 연소 안정성 특성)

  • Effects of combustion chamber design on combustion stability characteristics of a full-scale gas generator were studied experimentally. Thirty seven double-swirl injectors with recess number of 1.5 were distributed in the injector head, which significantly influences combustion performance. The characteristics of combustion stability were inspected by the parametric variations such as changing length and diameter of the combustion chamber and installing a turbulence ring. The experimental result shows that as the effective length of the combustion chamber decreased, an instability frequency took place in a high-frequency region, and the amplitude of the dynamic pressure generally diminished and could be reduced to the unharmful level. However, the dynamic pressure fluctuation in the region of longitudinal resonant frequency could not be suppressed perfectly.

  • Combustion characteristics of full-scale gas generators were studied experimentally by changing the injector number installed at the injector head. Three full-scale gas generators were utilized; they have same total mass flow rate but mass flow rates per injector are different. Thirteen, nineteen and thirty seven injectors, which have internal-mixing and double-swirl characteristics, are distributed in injector heads, respectively. The results showed that pressure fluctuations in the gas generators with 13 and 19 injectors didn't occur around longitudinal resonant frequency, however longitudinal-mode pressure fluctuation appeared slightly in the gas generator with 37 injectors. As the number of injectors increased, deviations of temperature distribution in the combustion chamber decreased gradually, but the damage of injector LOx posts became a little severe.

  • Development of a small gas-turbine combustor for 100㎾ class APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) has been performed. This combustor is a reverse-annular type and has a tangential swiller in the liner head to improve the fuel/air mixing and flame stability. Three main and three pilot fuel injectors of the simplex pressure-swirl type are used. The performance target at the design condition includes a turbine inlet temperature of l170k, a combustion efficiency of 99%, a pattern factor of 30%, and an engine durability of 3000 hours. Under developing the combustor, we conducted the performance test of our first prototype(TS1) with some variants. As a result of the test, the performance targets of the combustor are satisfied except that the pattern factor is about 4% higher than the target value. Therefore, the second prototype(TS2) was redesigned and the performance test was conducted with the critical focus on the pattern factor and the exit mean temperature. We adopted TS2 four variants to check the improvement of the pattern factor. As a result, the pattern factors of several variants were satisfied with the performance target. Finally, the TS2A variant was chosen as a final combustor fur our APU model.
