  • Tumble flow test rig has been used as the useful tool in the developing intake system because major flow pattern induced by intake port of DOHC engine is tumble. Angular momentum of in-cylinder tumble flow can not be directly measured by impulse torque meter in the test rig like that of in-cylinder swirl flow due to rotational axis of the flow. Therefore the adaptor to transform tumble to swirl flow must be adapted in the test rig. In this study, using the commercial CFD code STAR-CD, we studied the effects on measured results due to the variation of the major design variables in the adaptor, tube length(L), tube diameter(D) and cylinder height(H). The effect of the attached angle($\theta$) of the test head to the adaptor also was simulated.

  • To optimize the stationary components in the multistage centrifugal pump, the effects of the return vane profile on the performances of the multistage centrifugal pump were investigated experimentally, taking account of the inlet flow conditions for the next stage impeller. The return vane, whose trailing edge is set at the outer wall position of the annular channel downstream of the vane and which discharges the swirl-less flow, gives better pump performances. By equipping such return vane with the swirl stop set from the trailing edge to the main shaft position, the unstable head characteristics can be also suppressed successfully at the lower discharge. Taking the pump performances and the flow conditions into account, the impeller blade was modified so as to get the shock-free condition where the incidence angle is zero at the inlet.

  • As a second part of the comparison study, microscopic features of an air-assisted fuel injector(AAFI) and a high-pressure swirl injector (HPSI) were characterized. They consist of the internal spray structure in terms of fuel mass and drop diameter, the overall atomization performance with respect to operating parameters and the drop size distribution. Large droplets are concentrated in around the head part of a spray field of the HPSI, while in the case of the AAFI, they were distributed in the tail part. Although the AAFI showed the better atomization performance, the feasible ranges of operating parameters such as injection and ambient pressure were found to be wider in the HPSI. Drop size distribution of the AAFI sprays was more dispersed than that of the HPSI. Drop size distribution of the AAFI sprays was more dispersed than that of the HPSI. However, at the well-atomized condition, it appeared to be very uniform.

  • This paper is the second investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In the previous work, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation might cause serious problems. In this study, intake valve angle is selected as a main parameter for the assessment because the main flow direction to cylinder governed by this angle has the strongest influence on the in-cylinder flow pattern. For this purpose, four heads, which have the different angle, are prepared and the flow characteristics are estimated both by the conventional impulse swirl meter and a particle image velocimetry at 1.75 times bore position apart from the cylinder head, which is widely used plane in the steady flow measurement. The results show that both of the eccentricity and the velocity profile distort the flow characteristics when using the ISM at 1.75 plane, however, the effects of two factors act in the opposite direction. In addition, the profile's influence is much greater than that of the eccentricity.

  • The spatial fuel vapor distribution of the homogeneous charge by a 6-hole injector was examined in a optically accessed single cylinder direct injection spark ignition(DISI) engine. The effects of in-cylinder charge motion, and fuel injection pressure, and coolant temperature were investigated using a planar LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique. It was confirmed that the in-cylinder tumble flow played a little more effective role in the spatial fuel vapor distribution than the swirl flow during the compression stroke at 10 mm and 2 mm planes under cylinder head gasket and the increased fuel injection pressure activated spatial distributions of the fuel vapor. In additions, richer mixtures were concentrated around the cylinder wall by the increase of the coolant temperature.

  • An experimental study of in-cylinder of flow and combustion characteristics in two gasoline engines of different intake ports which are denoted as original port and masked shroud head (MSH) ports is presented. The flows generated by the MSH and the original port are invest- igated by laser Doppler velocimeter(LDV) under steady flow and motoring (non-firing) condit -ions. Combustion characteristics with different swirl levels produced by two intake ports are analyzed by combustion pressure measurement and statistical calculation. The swirl inside the cylinder of the MSH port engine is found to be much higher than the original port, and the MSH has a large eddy motion of cylinder diameter size. Using ensemble average method to valuate engine turbulence under motoring condition, the MSH port engine is shown to have h -igher turbulence intensity than the original port, so that the effect of the MSH port on fast burn is shown. Also the cyclic variations of peak pressure and the reaching time in the MSH port are apparently reduced.

  • The flow field inside a cylinder of four-valve Sl engine was investigated quantitatively using a three-dimensional Laser Doppler Velocimetry system, to determine how stroke changes affect the flow field. The purpose of this work was to develop quantitative methods which correlate in-cylinder flows to engine performance. For this study, the sane intake manifold, engine head, cylinder, and the piston were used to examine the flow characteristics in different strokes. Quantification of the flow field was done by calculating three major parameters which are believed to adequately characterize in cylinder motion. These quantities were TKE, tumble and swirl ratios. The LDV results reveal that flow patterns are similar, the flow velocities scale with piston speed but another parameters such as TKE, and tumble and swirl numbers are not the same for different stroke systems.

  • A computer program was developed to predict swirling steady axisymmetric turbulent flows by extending TEACH Code. It was applied to a reciprocating engine cylinder with a intake valve on the flat head. Flows were assumed to be steady and swirling. Effects of Reynolds number, the valve lift, and the swirl ratio on flow patterns and turbulence were investigated numerically. Flow patterns were reasonably predicted in comparison with experimental results. Length of the recirculation zone was shortened with increasing valve lifts and swirl ratios. Static pressure distributions show maximum value near the reattachment point of the incoming circular jet and minimum value near the maximum width of the valve attached recirculation zone.

  • Urban sewer systems are designed to operate in open-channel flow regime and energy loss at square manholes is usually not significant. However, the energy loss at surcharged manholes is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the head loss associated with manholes, especially in surcharged flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change the manhole inner profile(CASE I, II, III, and IV) and the invert types(CASE A, B, C) were installed for this study. The experimental discharge was $16{\ell}/sec$. As the ratio of b/D(manhole width/inflow pipe diameter) increases, head loss coefficient increases due to strong horizontal swirl motion. The head loss coefficients for CASE I, II, III, and IV were 0.46, 0.38, 0.28 and 0.37, respectively. Side covers increase considerably drainage capacity at surcharged square manhole when the ratio of d/D(side cover diameter/inflow pipe diameter) was 1.0. The head loss coefficients for CASE A, B, and C were 0.45, 0.37, and 0.30, respectively. Accordingly, U-invert is the most effective for energy loss reduction at surcharged square manhole. This head loss coefficients could be available to evaluate the urban sewer system with surcharged flow.
