Lean combustion in a SI engine is one of the best solution for the improvement of fuel economy and reduction of pollutant emission. In order to access a lean combustion engine, stable combustion at lean AlF ratio is needed. In this paper, the effect of fuel injection timing on lean misfire limit has been investigated in an MPI engine. To investigate the interaction of injection timing and intake flow characteristics, three different swirl generating SCV(swirl control valve) configurations were considered, and investigated their effects on lean misfire limit and torque at full load operation. Also the effects of spark timing on lean combustion has been investigated. Lean combustion has been examined and the results are reported in this paper. SCV B has been developed to satisfy the requirements of sufficient swirl generation to improve lean combustion and stable performance. It is found that injection timing, spark timing and intake air motion govern the stable lean combustion.

Recently, many researches have been performed to improve performances of the combustion and emission in the D.I.Diesel engine. Especially reduction of the soot formation in tole combustion chamber is the essential to acquire the improvement of the emission performance. These emission of the diesel combustion is effected by the characteristics of air-fuel mixing. Thus, in this study, the distribution of soot in the diesel combustion is measured by LII(laser induced incandescence) and LIS(Laser induced scattering) method. From this experimental results, it is confirmed that the swirl flow intensified by SCV(swirl control valve) is effective on the reduction of soot in the combustion chamber.

This paper studies the effects of intake port configuration on the swirl that is key parameter in the flow field of direct injection diesel engines. In-cylinder flow characteristics is known to have significant effects on fuel air mixing, combustion and emissions. To investigate the swirl flow generated by various intake ports, steady state flow tests were conducted to evaluate the swirl. Helical port geometry, SCV shape and bypass were selected as the design parameters to increase the swirl flow and parametric study was performed to choose the optimal port shape that would generate a high swirl ratio efficiently. The results revealed that a key factor in generating a high swirl ratio was to suitably control the direction of the intake air flow passing through the valve seat. For these purposes, we changed the distance of helical and tangential port as well as installed bypass near the valve seat and the effects of intake port geometry on in-cylinder flow field were visualized by a laser sheet visualization method. From the experimental results, we found that the swirl ratio and mass flow rate had a trade off relation. In addition, the result indicates that the bypass is a effective method to increase the swirl ratio without sacrificing mass flow rate.

Recently, many researches have been performed to improve the performance of the combustion and emission in a D.I.Diesel engine. One of the main factors effect on the characteristics of combustion is the characteristic of air-fuel mixing. Thus, swirl flow has been used widely to improve the air-fuel mixing in a D.I.Diesel engine. Since this swirl flow has interaction with other factors, in this study, the characteristics of the combustion and the flame effected by the swirl flow generated by SCV was investigated. From this experiment, the interactions of the swirl flow and the injection timing made clear. In addition, the effects of swirl and injection timing on the diffusion flame were clarified.

Recently, many researches have been performed to improve the performance of the combustion and emission in a D.I.Diesel engine. And many new techniques have been introduced and developed to reduce NO$_{x}$ and soot exhausted from diesel combustion. Some of these methods have the peculiar injection timing which is not used to traditional timing. To optimize these injection timing, characteristics of swirl flow and interaction of swirl with injection in the diesel engine should be investigated more carefully. Therefore, in this study, 2-zone energy method is adopted for the understanding of swirl flow in condition of moving piston, and then flame visualizations and image process are performed. From these studies, the characteristics of the swirl flow generated by SCV was investigated and the effect of swirl on injection timing was elucidated. As the results, velocity distribution caused by swirl flow increase the space utilization rate of flame plums. And flame plums of weak momentum are remained inside of combustion chamber by the swirl flow.w.
As an engine has a wide range of RPM $(3000\~12000\;RPM)$, variable control system is necessary in order to increase engine performance. SCV has been frequently referred to as a possible way to increase engine performance at low RPM. The purpose of this study is to investigate on the influence of SCV, specially at the range of lower revolution, in a high-speed small engine. Experiments were conducted on 4 Valves SOHC/air-cooling single cylinder engine and SCV shapes have been tested fur swirl intensity, the performance of power, fuel consumption and emission. As a result, we find to use SCV range be below 5000 RPM which fuel consumption decreased $9\%$.

For the purpose of development of a GDI engine, the in-cylinder phenomena, such as the spray behaviors, fuel distributions, unburned fuel, and flame characteristics were investigated in a single cylinder GDI engine. The GDI engine was equipped with a swirl type electronic injector and SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used far the measurements of fuel distributions. The effects of the injector specifications, such as the spray cone angle and the offset angle on the in-cylinder phenomena were investigated. As a result, it was found that the injected fuel collided with the bottom of the bowl and moved upward along the exhaust side wall of piston bowl. This fuel vapor played an important role in the instance of spark ignition. The unburned fuel and flame characteristics were greatly influenced by the injector specifications.

This paper studies the effects of the swirl for the variation of intake port configuration that is key parameters in the flow field of direct injection diesel engines. In-cylinder flow characteristics is known to have significant effects on air-fuel mixing, combustion, and emissions. To investigate the effects of the swirl flow, various rpm(250, 500, 750) and two different intake port were used. And to evaluate the swirl motion in the flow field visualization engine, steady state flow test was conducted. Helical port intake port and SCV(Swirl Control Valve) were selected as the design parameters to increase the swirl flow and parametric study was performed. In the case of non-SCV, intake flow rate and non-dimensional swirl ratio were higher than those of SCV for the swirl head type. So, we could strengthen the swirl in the flow field with the swirl head type and don't using SCV. From the results of steady state flow test, non-swirl head type has the most good advantage for intake flow rate, and also the flow rate could be increased by using the SCV slightly. The effects of the type of engine head on intake air flow capability are dominant with respect to the existence of the SCV. We could measure the qualitative grade of swirl by capturing the scattering signal of microballoon from ICCD camera in the visualization diesel engine.
Soot has a great effect on the formation of PM (Particulate Matter) in D.I. (Direct Injection) Diesel engines. Soot in diesel flame is formed by incomplete combustion when the fuel atomization and mixture formation were poor. Therefore, the understanding of soot formation in a D.I. diesel engine is mandatory to reduce PM in exhaust gas. To investigate soot formation in diesel combustion, various measurements have been performed with laser diagnostics. In this study, the relative soot diameter and the relative number density in a DJ. engine was measured by using LIS (Laser Induced Scattering) and LII (Laser Induced Incandescence) methods simultaneously which are planar imaging techniques. And a visualization D.I. diesel engine was used to introduce a laser beam into the combustion chamber and investigate the diffusion flame characteristics. To find the optimal condition that reduces soot formation in diesel combustion, various injection timing and the swirl flow in the cylinder using the SCV (Swirl Control Valve) were applied. From this experiment, the effects of injection timing and swirl on soot formation were established. Effective reduction of soot formation is possible through the control of these two factors.

For the Purpose of understanding the mixing phenomena of a GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, the spray behaviors and fuel distributions were investigated in a single cylinder transparent GDI engine. The experimental engine is a swirl type GDI engine with a SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used for the measurement of the fuel distributions. The effects of SCV opening angles and the injector specifications on the fuel distribution characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the SCV opening angle had a great effect on the fuel distributions in the late stage of compression process by changing the flow fields in the combustion chamber.
