A total of 501 serum samples were selected from blood samples that were submitted to Department of Veterinary Pathology, Kangwon National University from all provinces in Korea from September 2001 to August 2002. Their sera were examined for antibodies to swine influenza virus subtype H1N1 (SlV H1N1) and porcine repro-ductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) according to the age of pig, season, and herd size using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The seroprevalence of SIV H1N1, PRRSV, and dual infection were 39.12%, 61.48%, and 25.95%, respectively. The seroprevalence of SIV H1N1 according to herd size was not significant differences (p>0.05). The results showed that the PRRSV infection spread widely in swine herds throughout the country.

A pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus strain was isolated from a pig farm in Korea in December 2009. The strain was propagated in and isolated from both the Madin-Darby canine kidney cell line and embryonated eggs. The partial and complete sequences of the strain were identical to those of A/California/04/2009, with >99% sequence similarity in the HA, NA, M, NS, NP, PA, PB1, and PB2 genes. The isolated strain was inactivated and used to prepare a swine influenza vaccine. This trial vaccine, containing the new isolate that has high sequence similarity with the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus, resulted in seroconversion in Guinea pigs and piglets. This strain could therefore be a potential vaccine candidate for swine influenza control in commercial farms.

H1N2 influenza viruses are circulating in pigs worldwide and cause considerable economic losses to the pig industry. We genetically analyzed the genes of our isolates from Korean pigs, and compared the antigenicity of our isolates with swine H1N2 viruses isolated from pigs in the U.S.A. In addition, we serologically surveyed the infection rate of swine H1N2 viruses in pigs. We found that H1N2 isolates from Korean pigs are genetically more related to swine H1N2 viruses isolated from pigs in the U.S.A. than those in European countries. When antigenicity was compared, our isolates were weakly reacted to antibodies against swine H1N2 viruses isolated from pigs in the U.S.A. The serological surveillance using sera from pigs in Korea showed that about 46% was positive for H1N2 viruses. Our results suggest that swine H1N2 viruses are widespread in Korean pigs, and the development of a vaccine against H1N2 viruses may help to control their infection in pigs.
After an outbreak of H1N1 influenza A virus infection in Mexico in late March 2009, the World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert level to phase 6, and to the highest level in June 2009. The pandemic H1N1/A influenza was caused by an H1N1 influenza A virus that represents a quadruple reassortment of two swine strains, one human strain, and one avian strain of influenza. After the first case report of H1N1/A infection in early May 2009, South Korea was overwhelmed by this new kind of influenza H1N1/A pandemic, which resulted in a total of 700,000 formally reported cases and 252 deaths. In this article, clinical characteristics of victims of H1N1/A influenza infection, especially those who developed pneumonia and those who were cared for in the intensive care unit, are described. In addition, guidelines for the treatment of H1N1/A influenza virus infection victims in the ICU, which was suggested by the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine, are introduced.

In this study, we developed a rapid, sensitive and specific reverse-transcriptase loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay for detection of swine influenza viruse (SIV) including major subtypes of swine influenza viruses H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2, and a novel subtype of influenza A virus that accidentally infected in pig population. The RT-LAMP was completed in 40 min at $58^{\circ}C$ and the sensitivity of the RT-LAMP ($1copy/{\mu}L$) was 10-fold higher than conventional reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) ($10copy/{\mu}L$) and the same to real time RT-PCR ($1copy/{\mu}L$). Also, the result of the RT-LAMP can be confirmed without any detection system. Therefore, the RT-LAMP could be a alternative diagnostic method for SIV detection in national SIV monitoring system and clinical diagnostic laboratory in the future.
Since its identification in April 2009, a swine-origin H1N1 influenza A virus (S-OIV) which is a reassortment of gene segments from both North American triple-reassortant and Eurasian swine influenza has been widely spread among humans in unexpected rapidity. To date, each gene segment of the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) outbreak viruses have shown high (99.9%) neucleotide sequence identity. As of July 6, 94,512 people have been infected in 122 countries, of whom 429 have died with an overall case-fatality rate of <0.5%. Most confirmed cases of S-OIV infection have been characterized by self-limited, uncomplicated febrile respiratory illness and 38% of cases have also included vomiting or diarrhea. Standard plus droplet precautions should be adhered to at all times. Tests on S-OIV have indicated that current new H1N1 viruses are sensitive to neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir). However, current less virulent S-OIV may evolve into a pathogenic strain or acquire antiviral resistance, potentially with more severe clinical consequences. Efforts to control these outbreaks would be based on our understanding of novel S-OIV and previous influenza pandemics.

Every year influenza contributes to the death of 72 people in the South korea, 20,000 in the U.S. and perhaps millions worldwide. The swine fever so-called the noble flu A H1N1, a strain of the flu virus, which jumped species and burst into the human population in March and April of this year. The outbreak of 2009 novel H1N1 was the fourth in 100 years. Fortunately, it led to today's comparatively tame swine flu than the vicious 1918, which was original H1N1 pandemic flu virus, killed at least 40 million worldwide in an ongoing pandemic era. Although the 2009 H1N1 which is still in full swing, this global flu epidemic is already teaching scientists valuable lessons about pandemics. Evidence accumulated these days indicates that the 2009 H1N1 was not entirely new to all human immune systems. This article introduces only an outline for our better understanding the basic mechanisms of influenza and the vaccination about longstanding fears of that worst-case scenario engendered pandemic that are paying off today.
Swine influenza is an acute, infectious respiratory disease caused by type A influenza viruses in pigs. In the previous studies, serological surveys have indicated the presence of H3N2 swine influenza virus (SIV) since 1995 in Korea. And the percentage of the antibody-positive rate was 39.12% in the survey determining the prevalence of H1N1 SIV antibodies in 2002. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the sero-prevalence of SIV regard to the age of the pig and the season between June 2004 and May 2005. In this study, a total of 932 sera were used. These sera were randomly selected from blood samples, which were submitted to Department of Veterinary Pathology, Kangwon National University and Department of Veterinary Virology, Seoul National University from June 2004 to May 2005. These sera have been tested by ELISA test kit (IDEXX Lab, USA) for the SIV H3N2, H1N1 respectively. SAS version 9.1 was used for the statistical analysis based on the age of the pig and the season. The overall sero-prevalence of the antibody against H3N2 SIV was 20.82% (194/932). The overall sero-prevalence of the antibody against H1N1 SIV was 37.23% (347/932). The overall dual sero-prevalence of the antibody against H3N2 and H1N1 SIV was 10.62% (99/932). H3N2 has significant difference in statistically regarding the age of the pig and the season (p<0.0001). H1N1 has significant difference in statistically regarding the age of the pig (p<0.0001) but has not significant difference in statistically regarding the season (p=0.5882).
Swine influenza is an acute respiratory disease prevalent in pig-growing areas worldwide. In total, 518 gilt and sow serum samples and 14 litters (66 samples) of aborted fetuses from 37 farms (average of 14 serum samples per farm) in Gyeongbuk Province were collected between September 2010 and May 2011. All samples were examined for antibodies to swine influenza virus (SIV) H1N1 and H3N2 using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The seropositive rates of gilt and sows were 59.8% (310/518) for SIV H1N1, 78.8% (408/518) for H3N2, and 55.6% (288/518) for both subtypes tested. The rate of aborted fetuses was 13.6% (9/66) for H1N1, 9.1% (6/66) for H3N2, and 9.1% for both subtypes. The seroprevalence for H1N1 in gilts and sows was 46.6% (69/148) and 65.1% (241/370), respectively, and that for H3N2 was 78.4% (116/148) and 78.9% (292/370), respectively.
