  • Compensating characteristics of a voltage sag/swell compensator utilizing single-phase matrix converter is examined. First, system configuration and operation for both voltage sag and swell are described. Next, in order to suppress pulsations of the source voltage, a countermeasure using low pass filter and all pass filter is introduced. Then, compensating characteristics of the compensator are investigated for R-L load by simulation. Finally, the validity of the simulated results is confirmed by the experimental results.

  • In this paper, a new single phase voltage sag/swell compensator using direct power conversion is introduced. A new compensator consists of input/output filter, series transformer and direct ac-ac converter, which is a single-phase back-to-back PWM converter without dc-link capacitors. Advantages of the proposed compensator include: simple power circuit by eliminating dc-link electrolytic capacitors and thereby, improved reliability and increased life time of the entire compensator; simple PWM strategy to compensate voltage sag/swell at the same time and reduced switching losses in the ac-ac converter. Further, the proposed scheme is able to adopt simple switch commutation method without requiring complex four-step commutation method commonly required in the direct power conversion. Simulation results are shown to demonstrate the advantages of the new compensator and PWM strategy.

  • Based on a thermohydraulic estimation of the level swell and shrinkage of the nuclear steam generators, a fuzzy logic controller is designed and tested to handle the problem of controlling the level swell and its restoration. The estimation is used to form an artificial system which is nearly the opposite of the level swell and shrinkage and a PD type controller is designed to control this system. This controller is added to a PI type ordinary fuzzy logic controller to form the proposed controller which is tested through various experiments on a scaled-down steam generator. It is found to perform efficiently so that the divergence of the level to a low limit can be avoided.

  • A new simplified topology for a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) based on direct converter with a reduced number of switches is presented. The direct converter is fabricated using only three bi-directional controlled switches. The direct converter is connected between the grid and center-tapped series transformer. The center-tapped series transformer is used to inject the compensating voltage synthesized by the direct converter. The DVR can properly compensate for long-duration, balanced, and unbalanced voltage sag and swell by taking power from the grid. The switches are driven by ordinary pulse width modulation signals. Simulation and hardware results validate the idea that the proposed topology can mitigate sag of 50% and swell of unlimited quantity.

  • In this paper, a new single phase voltage sag/swell compensator using direct power conversion is proposed. A new compensator consists of input/output filter, series transformer and direct ac-ac converter, which is a single-phase back-to-back PWM converter without dc-link capacitors. Advantages of the proposed compensator include: simple power circuit by eliminating dc link electrolytic capacitors and thereby, improved reliability and increased life time of the entire compensator; simple PWM strategy or compensating voltage sag/swell at the same time and reduced switching losses in the ac-ac converter. Further, the proposed scheme is able to adopt simple switch commutation method without requiring complex four-step commutation method that is commonly employed in the direct power conversion. Simulation and experimental results are shown to demonstrate the advantages of the new compensator and PWM strategy. A 220V, 3kVA single-phase compensator based on the digital signal processor controller is built and tested.

  • Juvenile and transitional-juvenile wood samples from loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) were immersed in water to investigate longitudinal and tangential swelling properties. Increment cores from twenty-six loblolly pine trees were sampled at breast height (1.37 m). Earlywood rings 5 and 9 were separated from the core, extracted, oven-dried and immersed in water at room temperature. The variance in longitudinal swell was significant for ring 5 compared to ring 9 (p = 0.001). It was found that tangential swell might predict longitudinal swelling of juvenile wood at ring 9 but not at ring 5. Poor correlation in ring 5 suggests that swelling response in younger juvenile wood may differ. The swell response at ring 5 did not follow the shrinkage models discussed in the literature while ring 9 adhered to the expected curve.

  • When ESS(Energy Storage System) is under normal operation, island situation can be occur because of grid accidents. When island operation occur, the system mode switches in to UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) mode to supply stabled load power. To decide island operation, checking grid magnitude or frequency is general. But regulation for sag and swell is required. In this paper, it proposes grid connection error detection algorithm for UPS operation when sag and swell occurs in grid, and analyzed by simulation.
