  • A high speed data link capability is one of the critical factors in determining the performance of the spaceborne SAR system with high resolution because of the strict requirement for the real-time data transmission of the massive SAR data in a limited time of mission. In this paper, based on the data link model characterized by the spaceborne small SAR system, the high rate multi-channel data link module is designed including link storage, link processor, transmitter, and wide-angle antenna. The design results are presented with the performance analysis on the data link budget as well as the multi-mode data rate in association with the SAR imaging mode of operation from high resolution to the wide swath. The designed data link module can be effectively used for the spaceborne and airborne applications which requires to expand the high speed data link capability.

  • The Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) is a high spatial resolution, visible imaging sensor which collects visible image data of the earth's sunlit surface and is the primary payload on KOMPSAT-l. The purpose of the EOC payload is to provide high resolution visible imagery data to support cartography of the Korean Peninsula. The EOC is a push broom-scanned sensor which incorporates a single nadir looking telescope. At the nominal altitude of 685Km with the spacecraft in a nadir pointing attitude, the EOC collects data with a ground sample distance of approximately 6.6 meters and a swath width of around 17Km. The EOC is designed to operate with a duty cycle of up to 2 minutes (contiguous) per orbit over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset. The EOC has no pointing mechanism of its own. EOC pointing is accomplished by right and left rolling of the spacecraft, as needed. Under nominal operating conditions, the spacecraft can be rolled to an angle in the range from +/- 15 to 30 degrees to support the collection of stereo data. In this paper, the status of EOC such as temperature, dark calibration, cover operation and thermal control is checked and analyzed by continuously monitored state of health (SOH) data and image data during the mission life of 3 years. The aliveness of EOC and operation continuation beyond mission life is confirmed by the results of the analysis.

  • SeaBeam2000, a multibeam echo sounder, is a new generation seabed mapping system of which a single swath covers an angular range of -60.deg. to 60.deg. from the vertical direction with 121 beams. It provides high-density and high-quality bathymetric data along with sidescan acoustic data. The purpose of the research is to develop a system for processing multibeam underwater acoustic and bathymetric data using digital signal processing techniques. Recently obtained multibeam echo sounder data covering a survey area in the East Sea of Korea ($37{\circ}$.00'N to $37{\circ}$30'N and $129{\circ}$40'E to $130{\circ}$30'E) are preliminarily processed using the developed system and reproduced in the raster image format as well as three dimensionally visualized form.

  • Multibeam Echosounder system is the latest technology of a hydrographic survey utilized in producing an electronic nautical chart, obtaining a DEM with high precision, making a moving image by Swath surveying a wide area. As a fundamental study for improving the precision of MBES, we compared and analyzed measurements of DGPS and Motion sensor, and studied for the dynamic characteristics of vessel's movements. DGPS was installed in front and in the rear and on both side or the vessel and surveyed. The receiving precision of surveyed GPS results was obtained to the satisfactory extent that was possible to valuate the accuracy of Motion sensor as 0.0016$^{\circ}$ of the roll value and 0.0009$^{\circ}$ of the pitch value. The relationship between the values of heading, pitch, and roll in Motion sensor and the data of DGPS was proportional correlation. In addition, it is considered that deviations by elements like rapid turning and vibration of the vessel will be occurred, although the correlation of each deviation according to each amount or change is proportional. It is suitable that GPS installs in the central line of the vessel that is less affected than other places by waving because the amount of change in the tide level obtained from GPS survey and the value of heave are similar with the values taken by Motion sensor, and the velocity of GPS is different from installed places. The accuracy of the final result from MBES could be affected by the values of gyro and Motion sensor inputted to MBES processor because there were intervals of 15s and 13s of receiving time in gyro and Motion sensor respectively compared with the real-time measurements of DGPS.

  • With increasing demands of high speed transportation, recently a lot of high speed marine vehicles, such as SWATH, semi-planing craft, planing craft, hydrofoil craft, SES and so on, have been paid attention especially in high speed region over the Froude number 0.5. The resistance characteristics of the vehicles should be experimentally evaluated in the towing tank. At the Seoul National University, a light-weight cantilever type towing carriage was devised and installed in the towing tank. Wireless measurement devices were also provided for appropriate data acquisition during high-speed towing tests. With the new carriage system, a series of model tests were performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of a stepped planning hull in the towing tank and the resistance performances of the hull are introduced in this report.

  • MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) is a main payload of KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite)-II which will be launched in 2004. MSC will perform his mission with the GSD(Ground Sample Distance) of 1m, swath width of 15km and spectral range of 450nm~900nm at the altitude of 685km. MSC consists of three main subsystems. One is EOS(Electro-Optics Subsystem), another is PMU(Payload Management Unit) and the other is PDTS(Payload Data Transmission Subsystem). There is an SBC(Single Board Computer) in the PW to control all the other units and SBC software performs the interface with spacecraft and control all MSC sub-units. SBC software consists of a lot of tasks and manages them with the time criticalness. All tasks are designed to be scheduled and executed at the predetermined time in order to make sure that the mission of MSC system is achieved successfully. In this paper, the real-time task scheduling of the SBC software will be described and analyzed.

  • KOMPSAT -2 equipped with an optical telescope(MSC) will be launched in this year. It can take images of the earth with push-broom scanning at altitude 685Km. Its resolution is 1m in panchromatic channel with a swath width of 15 km After the MSC is tested and the performance is measured at instrument level, it is installed on satellite. The image passes through the electro-optical system, compression and storage unit and fmally downlink sub-systems. This integration procedure necessitates the functional test of all subsystems participating in the image chain. The objective of functional test at satellite level(Quick Look test) is to check the functionality of image chain by real target image. Collimated moving image is input to the EOS in order to simulate the operational environments as if KOMPSAT -2 is being operated in orbit. The image chain from EOS to data downlink subsystem will be verified through Quick Look test. This paper explains the Quick Look test of KOMPSAT -2 and compares the taken images with collimated input ones.
