  • It is more important than ever to have talent with innovative capacities for sustainable agriculture and rural areas, but adolescents's interest in and understanding of agriculture and rural areas is very low. Therefore, this study analyzed the experiences of participants in the Agriculture Career Exploration Activities Program. and suggests strategies to improve and revitalize agricultural education based on these findings. First, Institutions and facilities that run agricultural education programs need opportunities for self-checks. Second, it is necessary to develop various contents and its distribution channels to enable the experience related to it in daily life. Third, it is important to provide experience in the middle school curriculum, which requires the use of a system such as the Free Semester System. Fourth, education and promotion to parents and teachers is also important, as it has a direct impact on youth's perception of it.

  • The directions and tasks of rural planning system can be accessed by the three view points of planning theory that are value formation, mean identification and effectuation. The concept of rural planning in Korea have been confronted with many problems and need to make new paradigm being able to develop depressed rural area. The highest valve in rural planning have been changed from economic development oriented to environmentally sound and sustainable development oriented. Also, the strategy of rural development have been changed rapidly. The growth pole theory and agricultural economic development strategy have been replaced by the urban-rural linkage theory and multi-sectoral development strategy including economic. social and spatial development. In recent, The implementation instruments for rural development focus on the participation of residence in rural area.

  • This study aims to explore a biological interpretation of farming practices mentioned in 'Sallimgyeongje(山林經濟)', an agricultural literature published in late 18C, in order to substantiate its scientific practicality and suggest the sustainable direction of modern agriculture. First, the research revealed that weeds and pests were effectively controlled by interspecies interactions such as allelopathy, mutualism, and interplanting. Second, qualified seeds were selected without dependence on chemical treatments by using specific gravity and cold water immersion. Third, the literature proposed plowing methods based on the properties of the soil, which implicated an establishment of healthy landscape mosaic by imitating the succession and introducing the moderate disturbance. Fourth, the genotypes of 37 native rice varieties were speculated based on six phenotype standards, and some of them are expected to have high nutritional value and abiotic stress resistance.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop planning technique for low carbon rural village planning. planning techniques (169 cases : waterside Technique 87, inland Technique 82) were extracted through a various previous studies and literature. planning techniques of 43 cases for low carbon rural village have been developed by the importance validity evaluation for planning techniques using the Delphi Method. Developed techniques can be utilized to plan low carbon rural village for Sustainable Rural Development. In addition, these techniques will be able to contribute to recognition of the need about low carbon rural village and the development of national green strategy.

  • Ecologically sustainable means of development is the point to support environmental homeostasis. One of our roles is to find bio-degradable resources that can be substituted for petroleum-based products to effectively abide by the natural viability. To counter the issues of deforestation and preserve biodiversity, it is necessary to produce a non-wood crop that can fulfill the requirement for raw material from which several products can be produced. Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), a member of the family Malvaceae, is showing sufficient potentiality along this road-map. Due to its rich fiber content, it has been used extensively in various fields for long, probably as early as 4,000 BC. At present, kenaf has been used as provider of paper, plastics, fiber glass, biofuel, activated carbon and epoxy composite. This obviously catch one's attention towards its capability to replace petroleum-based products as a whole. Moreover, the plant shows considerable relevance in decreasing pollutants by virtue of its enormous absorption capacity. These multiple applications of kenaf justify its credibility to be the best resource for the better world. The paper presents an overview on its numerous uses reported in the literature that we have investigated and its great potential as a valuable multipurpose crop.

  • The development of composting techniques is essential to the low input sustainable agriculture. This paper resents an evaluation of composting system, compost materials, aeration & temperature effects, compost maturity , and operational concerns for compost utilization. The composting of organic waste is markedly affected by the nature of the feedstock and the operational temperature employed for the process. These two major parameters are critically examined in this paper, with references to the decomposition of the organic waste. Future research should concentrate on the indications of stability and environmental problems.

  • Since 1995, agropolitan cities have been created, in order to pursue the balanced development between urban cities and its surrounding rural counties. However, the inequality of regional level that was caused by indiscreet development has become the ever-serious problems recently. Therefore, this study aims to analyze regional characteristics and patterns for setting up the sustainable spatial planning. Firstly, the regional characteristics were summarized by five factors; development-oriented factor, agricultural factor, living environmental factor, rice growing, fruit gardening factor. The regional patterns were classified with five patterns using cluster analysis; orchard farming, farming of medium and small size, small stagnation, under urbanization, mixed urban-rural properties, and industry of southeastern seashore. Accuracy of the results by discrimination analysis showed that pattern II, V, and VI were confidence level of 100%, but the others had nearly 90% confidence level.

  • In recent years, there have been a lot of severe flood and drought disasters and the rural environment have been worsened due to rapid industrialization and urbanization in the river basins of Korea. To prevent such disasters and to improve environment in the era of climate change, Korean Government carried out 110 projects to heighten irrigation dam in the rural area. The study has been carried out to evaluate the heightening work of the irrigation dam for the supply of reserved water and to derive optimal scheme to allocate the water resource for irrigation, domestic demand and environmental conservation as well as to contribute for the rural development in sustainable way. The study is focused on the Seoam Irrigation Dam which has been constructed in 2005 to be connected with the new Gami Reservoir which has been constructed since 2010. In addition, it was studied the contribution effect of the reservoirs for the adjacent comprehensive rural development projects which have been executed by local government. In the study, the principles and visions of sustainable development which have been derived by International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage is applied to estimate the sustainability of the irrigation dams in line with the adjacent comprehensive rural development projects. The project is estimated that the water resource in the reservoirs shall be used integratedly in cooperation with various stakeholders not only to conserve water environment but also to increase productivity of agricultural goods and ecological tour in the rural area.

  • Because of human population growth, longer lifespans, and climate change, there is growing concern around world to produce enough food and feed. Insects are regarded as an alternative with high potential because the production of insects demands limited amounts of water and land, and they can add value to low-value by-products. Insects have high levels of crude protein, lipids and minerals. The relative amount of protein can vary substantially, with crude protein content ranging from 23% to 76%, depending on insect species. Their amino acid composition is good and protein digestibility is high. Insect to be a significant sustainable source as a replacement of ingredients such as soya or fishmeal in the feeds of terrestrial livestock or fish. This review provides an overview of nutritional value of insect in animal feed and challenges required to develop a sustainable, safe, and affordable insect farming industry.

  • As a result of the rapid industrialization in Korea, dismantlement of traditional rural villages and sharp decreases in rural populations have been common phenomena in rural areas in Korea. Recently, some rural villages have made efforts to revitalize their villages particularly with emphasis on the sustainable development of the village. Mundang village is one of the good examples of rural village revitalization. Residents of the village established centennial plan for the sustainable village with the help of the experts. The paper introduces the summary of the planning process and plan itself.
