  • A three-level sustain circuit with six-switches for an ac plasma display panel (AC-PDP) drive is proposed. The proposed circuit features half the voltage stresses of sustain switches and clamp diodes and significantly reduced power losses compared with those of the conventional ones. This circuit, realizable with reduced cost of the semiconductor devices, gives a significant improvement in the power efficiency, essential for the design of a drive circuit for the AC-PDP. A comparative analysis and experimental results we presented to show the validity of the proposed sustainer circuit.

  • We have developed a new driving method named TROPHY(Talented Role-playing Technology with Dual Polarity sustainer in Hybrid Mono board). In this method, the sustain voltage is partially compared to the conventional method and the number of power sources is reduced by voltage level unification during the reset, address and sustain period. The hybrid mono board was especially developed to implement those technologies. Through this, we can lower the cost with the TROPHY compared to the conventional one. It is a suitable technology to improve the reliability of circuit and image sticking problem. We can also reduce the number of driving boards and the EMI problem compared with those of the conventional method.

  • The characteristics of the sustain-driving circuit were examined in this paper. The sustain-driving circuit is in charge of the most important part of PDP driving because it manages most of the power consumption in the PDP. A couple of gatedriving circuits for the sustain-driving circuit were introduced in this paper, and a new driving circuit was also proposed. This new circuit is more cost-effective and has a simpler PCB layout compared to the conventional one. Some additional driving advantages were noted as well.

  • A cost-effective magnetic-coupled AC-PDP sustain driver with low switching loss is proposed. The transformer reduces current stress in the energy recovery switches which affects circuit cost and reliability. The turns-ratio can be used to adjust the sustain pulse slopes which affect gas discharge uniformity. Dividing the recovery paths prevents abrupt changes in the output capacitance and thereby switching losses of the recovery switches is reduced. In addition, the proposed circuit has a more simple structure because it does not use the recovery path diodes which also afford a large recovery current. By reducing the current stress and device count in the energy recovery circuit, the proposed driver may have decreased circuit cost and improved circuit reliability.

  • AC PDP has disadvantages that power consumption and sustain voltage are high. An energy recovery circuit for AC PDPs with reduced sustain voltage was proposed to solve these disadvantages. However, the circuit has disadvantage that the switching elements are performed hard switching at the start point of discharge and sustaining region. The reason is that the panel voltage is lower than sustain voltage at that point. In this paper, we propose the improved driving method that switching devices are operated with ZVS by using CIM(Current Infection Method) also at that point. CIM region is designed by theoretical circuit analysis. Finally, the validity of the proposed driving method is verified by the simulations and experimentation.

  • In this paper, a novel energy recovery circuit for AC PDPs(Plasma Display Panels) with reduced sustain voltage is proposed to improve the performance of conventional circuits such as TERES(TEchnology of REciprocal Sustainer). In the TERES circuit, the sustain voltage is the half of general sustaining driver for AC PDPs, however, there is no energy recovery circuit. In the proposed circuit, the efficiency is heightened by installing in energy recovery circuit and the loss of switching device is reduced by performing the zero voltage switching or zero current switching. Although the energy recovery circuit is added, the number of active switching elements of the proposed circuit is the same as that of the TERES circuit. The operations of the proposed circuit are analyzed for each mode and its validity is verified by the simulations and experimentation.

  • This paper presents a new sustain driver employing energy recovery function to minimize power losses transpired during the operation of plasma display panel. The proposed circuit uses the resonance between the equivalent capacitance of panel and an external inductor to provide/recover energy to/from the panel. The proposed circuit can save the system cost compared with the conventional one, and has high-performance in energy recovery. To verify the validity of the proposed circuit, we implemented experiments based on 7.5 inch AC-PDP.

  • An efficient sustain driver and a useful reset circuit composition technique are proposed for plasma display panel drive. The proposed sustain driver uses a series resonance between an external inductor and a panel to recover the energy dissipated by a capacitive displacement current of PDP. It consists of four switching devices, an inductor, and external capacitors, which supply sustain voltage sources. Although the amplitude of an input voltage source is twice as high as that of conventional sustain drivers, average voltage stress imposed on power switching devices is nearly same in their values. Moreover, the input voltage source can be directly applied for the use of a reset voltage source. Owing to this scheme, the proposed sustain driver and the embedded reset circuit have a simple configuration. The operational principle and design example are given with theoretical analyses. The validity of the proposed drive system is verified through experiments using a prototype equipped with a 7.5-inch-diagonal AC plasma display panel.
