  • Energy, a critical input, is to be efficiently managed via waste heat recovery and energy reuse for the economic viability of a process industry. In particular, cement manufacture demands a huge quantum of energy, for the necessary reactions. Huge amounts of hot effluent gases are generated. Energy recovery from these waste gases is an area that is of contemporary research interest. Now, about 75% of total heat recovery takes place in the riser of the suspension pre-heater system. This article deals with the hydrodynamic and heat transfer aspects of riser typically used in the cement industry. An experimental apparatus was designed and fabricated with provision for the measurement of gas pressure and solid temperatures at different heights of the riser. The system studied was air - chalcopyrite taken in different particle sizes. Acceleration length ($L_A$) determined at different parametric levels was fitted to an empirical correlation: $L_A/d_t=4.91902(d_p/d_t)^{0.10058}(w_s/w_g)^{-0.11691}(u_g{\mu}_g/d_t^2g{\rho}_g)^{0.28574}({\rho}_p/{\rho}_g)^{0.42484}$. An empirical model was developed for Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers using regression analysis: $Nu=0.40969(Re_p)^{0.99953}(Pr)^{0.03569}$.

  • The utilization of waste and industrial byproduct materials, such as blast furnace slag, shales, poor coal and anthracite briquet ash, were investigated as a source of calcareous or argillaceous material in the manufacture of Portland cement. As a slag is similar to cement in chemical compoment and contains about 40∼50% of CaO, it's utilization in cement manufacture should be suitable. The burnability was increased and the heat of clinker formation was decreased by using slag. Some consideration should betaken in the use of large quantity because of sticking in suspension preheater kiln. Suitable quantities of colliery shales and poor coal should be useable in cement manufacture as a argillaceous materials and also its combustible materials should be utilized in cement manufacture. Anthracite briquet ash is also usable as a argillaceous source and it gives good burnability.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the chemical properties of cement kiln dusts, abundantly produced from cement industry as a byproduct, and their effectiveness on rice yield. The field experiment was conducted on the acid paddy soil developed on basalt at Dongsong-Myon, Chulwon-Kun, Gangwon-Do. Two kinds of cement kiln dusts were used ; By Pass (BP) collected from the suspension preheater and Electric Precipitate (EP) from the cottrell electric precipitator. The levels of cement kiln dust applied were 100kg/10a, 200kg/10a and 300kg/10a, and the recommended variety "Nong Back" was adopted for this experiment. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1. The component of cement kiln dusts seems to be quite suitable for liming material. BP has 55% alkalinity, 41.7% of soluble calcium, 9.8% of soluble magnesium and 4.5% of water soluble silicate, while EP has 53.5% alkalinity, 41.7% soluble calcium, 8.3% soluble magnesium and 1% water soluble silicate. 2. The relative effectiveness of cement kiln dust in the soil will be superior due to very fine particle size. EP pass through completely 270 mesh screen, and 95% of BP pass through 150 mesh screen, 68% passing 270 mesh. 3. BP application at the rate of 100kg/10a increased 21% of rice yield as compared with control and EP 15%. It was observed that the affected yield components were increased panicle number per hill, grain number per panicle and 1,000 grains weight. 4. The application of optimum amount (100kg/10a) of cement kiln dusts accelerated the uptake of nutrients by rice plant and increased rice yield. However, the excess amounts (200kg/10a, 300kg/10a) of cement kiln dusts retarded the uptake of nutrients from soil.
