Ride Comfort Investigation of 1/4 MR Damper Vehicle under Different Tire Pressure (타이어 압력 변화에 따른 1/4 MR 댐퍼 차량의 승차감 고찰)

  • This paper presents ride comfort characteristics of a quarter-vehicle magneto-rheological(MR) suspension system with respect to different tire pressure. As a first step, controllable MR damper is designed and modeled based on both the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial full-size passenger vehicle. Then, a quarter-vehicle suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the MR damper is constructed. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle MR suspension system, vertical tire stiffness with respect to different tire pressure is experimentally identified. The skyhook controller is then implemented for the realization of the quarter-vehicle MR suspension system. Finally, the ride comfort analysis with respect to different tire pressure is undertaken in time domain. In addition, a comparative result between controlled and uncontrolled is provided by presenting vertical RMS displacement.

  • This paper proposes a new type of MR (magentorheological) fluid based suspension system and applies it to military vehicle for vibration control. The suspension system consists of gas spring and MR damper. The nonlinear behavior of spring characteristics is evaluated with respect to the wheel travel and damping force model due to viscosity and yield stress of MR fluid is derived. Subsequently, a military vehicle of 6WD is adopted for the integration of the MR suspension system and its nonlinear dynamic model is establishes by considering vertical, pitch and roll motion. Then, a sky-hook controller associated with semi-active actuating condition is designed to reduce the vibration. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed MR suspension system, computer simulation is undertaken showing vibration control performance such as roll angle and pitch angle evaluated under bump and random road profiles.

  • This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts tue vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.

Estimation of Dynamic Characteristics of Namhae Suspension Bridge Using Ambient Vibration Test (상시진동을 이용한 남해대교의 동특성 평가)

  • The AVT under traffic-induced vibrations was carried out on Namhae suspension bridge in Korea. Mode shapes as well as natural frequencies up to the 15th mode were acquired exactly, and the effect of traffic mass and temperature on measured natural frequencies was investigated. The results from the AVT are compared with those from forced vibration test(FVT) and FE analysis. In the case of long span suspension bridges such as Namhae bridge which has relatively large mass, the results shows that the measured natural frequencies are not affected by vehicle mass. From the results of long-term variation of natural frequencies due to temperature change, it can be said that temperature effect may be predominant to structural demage effect. Therefore, if damage detection methods based on dynamic characteristics of bridges are to be used, the variation should be taken into consideration.

  • Typically, three types of levitation technologies are applied to magnetic levitation systems: electromagnetic suspension, electrodynamic suspension, and hybrid electromagnetic suspension. A Halbach array is a special arrangement of permanent magnets which augments the magnetic field on one side of the device while cancelling the field to near zero on the other side. The application of this Halbach array magnet to the electrodynamic suspension has been recently studied in order to increase the levitation capability. This paper is focused on an analytical method of the magnetic levitation system using Halbach array magnet. The suitability of the proposed method is verified with comparing to the finite element method. In addition, dynamic stability of the magnetic levitation system is discussed. From this study, it is confirmed that the proposed method provides a reasonable solution with less computation time compared to the finite element method and the magnetic levitation system using Halbach array magnet is stable dynamically.

As a first step, front and rear MR dampers are designed and manufactured based on the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial middle-sized passenger vehicle. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the MR dampers, the test vehicle is prepared for road test by integrating current suppliers, real-time data acquisition system and numerous sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscope. Subsequently, the manufactured four MR dampers (two for front parts and two for rear parts) are incorporated with the test vehicle and a skyhook control algorithm is formulated and realized in the data acquisition system. In order to emphasize practical aspect of the proposed MR suspension system, road tests are undertaken on proving grounds: bump and paved roads.   • This paper presents design and control of electronic control suspension(ECS) equipped with controllable magnetorheological(MR) damper for passenger vehicle. In order to achieve this goal, a cylindrical type MR fluid damper that satisfies design specification of a middle-sized commercial passenger vehicle is proposed. After manufacturing the MR damper with design parameters, their field-dependent damping forces are experimentally evaluated and compared with those of a conventional damper. A quarter-vehicle MR ECS system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire, controller and the MR damper is established in order to investigate the ride comfort performances. On the basis of the governing equation of motion of the suspension system, five control strategies(soft, hard, comfort, sport and optimal mode) are formulated. The proposed control strategies are then experimentally realized with the quarter-vehicle MR ECS system. Control performances such as vertical acceleration of the car body and tire deflection are evaluated in frequency domains on random road condition. In addition, performance comparison of WRMS(weighted root mean square) of the quarter-vehicle MR ECS system on random road are undertaken in order to investigate ride comfort characteristics.
