Shear thickening is an intriguing phenomenon in the fields of chemical engineering and rheology because it originates from complex situations with experimental and numerical measurements. This paper presents results from the numerical modeling of the particle-fluid dynamics of a two-dimensional mixture of colloidal particles immersed in a fluid. Our results reveal the characteristic particle behavior with an application of a shear force to the upper part of the fluid domain. By combining the lattice Boltzmann and discrete element methods with the calculation of the lubrication forces when particles approach or recede from each other, this study aims to reveal the behavior of the suspension, specifically shear thickening. The results show that the calculated suspension viscosity is in good agreement with the experimental results. Results describing the particle deviation, diffusivity, concentration, and contact numbers are also demonstrated.
Metal bonded rubber spring is used in primary suspension component of the high speed train. The aim of this study is to establish a finite element analysis technique for the metal bonded rubber spring. Some theoretical analyses were performed on the hyperelastic behavior in rubber material and test are carried out to acquire the constants in strain energy function for it. Also, finite element analysis were executed to evaluate the design parameter and behavior of deformation and stress distribution using by the commercial finite element code.

Durability of rubber dust cover in the ball joint for automotive suspension parts were analyzed by FEM and compared with experimental data. Upper open area of ball joint is sealed by dust cover for preventing outflow of the lubricating oil and intrusion of send, dust, water, etc. This rubber cover undergoes repeated loadings such as tension and compression while the car is running. Analysis about rubber material needs to consider every kinds of nonlinearities arise in finite element analysis, which are geometric nonlinearity due to large displacement and small strain, materially nonlinearity and nonlinear boundary condition such as contact. So in the study, the deformation behavior of dust cover was analysed by using the commercial finite element program MARC. This program could solve these kinds of nonlinear analysis accurately. Finite element model of dust cover is considered as 3-dimensional half model based on 2-dimensional axisymmetric model. Material property of rubber was modeled by Ogden model and input data for calculation takes form uniaxial tension test of rubber specimen, The final object of the study is obtaining the design specification of dust covers and the result of analysis should be a useful data to design of rubber
Hybrid composite strut tower was designed to prevent permanent deformation of upper mount by the impact from the uneven road. When exceeding energy absorption capacity of tire and suspension systems, residual impact is delivered to upper mount. Especially, in case of using high-rigidity suspension system for high driving performance, the conventional strut tower can be easily deformed due to reduction of energy absorption capacity of suspension systems. In this study, optimal design of hybrid composite strut tower which made of back-up metal and carbon fiber reinforced composite was suggested by using finite element analysis, and low velocity impact test was performed to investigate their dynamic characteristics. Also, 3D measuring and ultra c-scanning methods were carried out to diagnose damages in the strut towers.

This paper develops the flexible computational model of a heavy truck by interfacing the frame modeled as a flexible body to the heavy truck's computational model composed of rigid bodies. The frame is modeled by the finite element method. Three torsional modes and three bending modes of the frame are considered for the interface of the heavy truck's computational model. The actual vehicle test is conducted off road with a velocity of 20km/h. The vertical accelerations at the cab and front axle are measured in the test. For the verification of the developed computational model, the measured vertical acceleration profiles are compared with the simulation results of the heavy truck's flexible computational model. E grade irregular road profile of ISO is used as an excitation input in the simulation. The verified flexible computational model is used to compare the vibration characteristics of a front suspension system having a multi-leaf spring and that having a tapered leaf spring. The comparison results show that the front suspension having a tapered leaf spring has a higher vertical acceleration at the front axle but a lower vertical acceleration at the cab than the suspension system having a multi-leaf spring.

In recent engineering, the designer has become more and more dependent on the computer simulations such as FEM(Finite Element Method) and BEM(Boundary Element Method). In order to optimize such implicit models more efficiently and reliably, the meta -modeling technique has been developed for solving such a complex problems combined with the DACE(Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments). It is widely used for exploring the engineer's design space and for building approximation models in order to facilitate an effective solution of multi-objective and multi-disciplinary optimization problems. Optimization of a train suspension is performed according to the minimization of forty -six responses that represent ten ride comforts, twelve derailment quotients, twelve unloading ratios, and twelve stabilities by using the Kriging model of a train suspension. After each Kriging model is constructed, multi -objective optimal solutions are achieved by using a nonlinear programming method called SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming).

In this paper, the vibration for a pickup actuator is described by mathematically analyzing its suspension configuration and motion, confined to lateral and torsional directions of suspensions. In order to prove the accuracy of this result, it is compared to a finite element analysis. Also it is shown that modal frequencies can be modified by changing design parameters in mathematical motion expressions.
The flutter stability of long-span suspension bridges during erection can be more problematic and more susceptible to be influenced by many factors than in the final state. As described in this paper, numerical flutter stability analyses were performed for the construction process of Zhongdu Bridge over Yangtze River using the commercial FE package ANSYS. The effect of the initial wind attack angle, the sequence of deck erection, the stiffness reduction of stiffening girders, the structural damping, and the cross cables are discussed in detail. It was found that the non-symmetrical sequence of deck erection was confirmed to be aerodynamically favourable for the deck erection of long-span suspension bridges and the best erection sequence should be investigated in the design phase. While the initial wind attack angle of $-3^{\circ}$ is advantageous for the aerodynamic stability, $+3^{\circ}$ is disadvantageous compared with the initial wind attack angle of $0^{\circ}$ during the deck erection. The stiffness reduction of the stiffening girders has a slight effect on the flutter wind speed of the suspension bridge during erection, but structural damping has a great impact on it, especially for the early erection stages.
A long suspension bridge is often located within a unique wind environment, and strong winds at the site seldom attack the bridge at a right angle to its long axis. This paper thus investigates the buffeting response of long suspension bridges to skew winds. The conventional buffeting analysis in the frequency domain is first improved to take into account skew winds based on the quasi-steady theory and the oblique strip theory in conjunction with the finite element method and the pseudo-excitation method. The aerodynamic coefficients and flutter derivatives of the Tsing Ma suspension bridge deck under skew winds, which are required in the improved buffeting analysis, are then measured in a wind tunnel using specially designed test rigs. The field measurement data, which were recorded during Typhoon Sam in 1999 by the Wind And Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) installed on the Tsing Ma Bridge, are analyzed to obtain both wind characteristics and buffeting responses. Finally, the field measured buffeting responses of the Tsing Ma Bridge are compared with those from the computer simulation using the improved method and the aerodynamic coefficients and flutter derivatives measured under skew winds. The comparison is found satisfactory in general.

This paper presents optimal design of controllable magnetorheological suspension unit for a tracked vehicle. As a first step, a double-rod type MR suspension unit is designed on the basis of the Bingham model of commercially available MR fluid, and its damping characteristics are evaluated with respect to the intensity of the magnetic field. Subsequently, the governing equation of motion of the MR suspension system featuring the MR valve is established. Then, the optimization problem to find optimal geometric dimensions of the MR supension unit is formulated by considering an objective function which is related to damping torque and control energy. The first order optimization method intergrated with a commercial finite element method(FEM) software is adopted to obtain optimal solution of the system. The performance characteristics of the optimized MR susepnsion unit is then evaluated and compared with initial one.
