Size distribution of suspended particulate materials (SPM) in the coastal waters of eastern Korea was studied using a laser particle size analyzer. Mean particle size (MPS) ranges from 3.69 to 8.40 ${\mu}m$ in surface waters, from 3.38 to 6.43 ${\mu}m$ in mid-depth waters, and from 3.88 to 8.30 ${\mu}m$ in near-bottom waters. For smaller MPS, the size distribution is unimodal, whereas it becomes polymodal as the MPS increases. Particle concentrations increased with the increases in MPS, suggesting that processes of adding larger particles in the waters such as resuspension of bottom sediments are more important in controlling MPS in the area than processes of removing smaller particles such as flocculation of fine particles. Observations of higher MPS near the coast in mid-depth waters, and at the continental slope in near-bottom waters appear to support the above idea. For surface waters with high MPS, mean particle density was noticably low, indicating the importance of biological activities in the formation of suspended particles.

Estimations of dry and wet depositions in Korea and the size distributions of yellow sand above Korea have been carried out using the Eulerian aerosol model with the simulated meteorological data from the SNU mesoscale meteorological model. The estimated particle size distribution in Korea shows a bimodal distribution with peak values at 0.6 pm and 7 pm and a minimum at 2 pm in the lower layer However, as higher up, the bimodal distribution becomes an unimodal distribution with a peak value at 4∼5mm. Among the total amount of yellow sand deflated in the source regions , the dry and wet deposition fluxes were about 92%, and about 1.3∼0.5%, repectively, and the rest(5∼6%) is suspended in the air, Most of dust lifted in the air during the clear weather is deposited in the vicinity of the source regions by dry deposition and the rest undergoes the long -range transport with a gradual removal by the wet deposition processes. Over Korean peninsula, the total amount of yellow sand suspended in the air was about 6∼8% of the emissions in the source region and the dry and wet deposition fluxes were about 0.005∼0.7% and 0.003∼0.051% of the total emitted amount, repectively. It is estimated that 2.7∼8.9 mesa-tons of yellow sand is transported annually over the Korean peninsula with the annual mean dry deposition of 2.1∼490 kilo-tons and the annual mean wet deposition of 1.5∼65 kilo-tons.

The x-ray fluorescence(XRF) is one of the most convenient and widely used techniques for analyzing trace elements in ambient particulate matters. The objects of the study were to estimate the optimum exposure time using the XRF, to investigate the distributions of heavy metal levels in particulate matters, and finally to study seasonal variation for the concentrations of total suspended particulate matters(TSP) and size fractionated particulate matters. The suspended particulate matters had been collected by a cascade impactor having 9 size fragnated stages for 3 years(Dec. 1988 to Nov. 1991) in Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus. The particulate matters were then collected on each stage by membrane filters. The weight concentrations were determined by the XRF system. Thus, seasonal variations and relationship between concentration and particle size could be investigated. Resulting distribution was bimodal with the coarse and the fine particle groups minimum occurring around 2.1 to 3.3 $\mu$m as an aerodynamic diameter. To determine optimum exposure time of the XRF for various trace inorganic elements, membrane filters and the NIST standard filters were extensively studied. Using a statistical technique, optimum exposure time was estimated for each trace element and overall elements. The time was then determined as 20 seconds for the XRF system. The concentration of TSP was 123.9$\mum/m^3$ on an arithmatic average. The levels of each inorganic metal were Si 2420.0ng/$m^3$, Fe 977.1ng/$m^3$, and so on. The Pb. Zn, and Cu abounded in the fine mode group, while Ca, Fe, Si, Al, and K in the coarse group. Marked seasonal variation of TSP and metal concentrations was observed. The concentration of heavy metals in the fine mode was highest in winter : on the other hand, that in the coarse mode was highest in spring.
In this study, temperature, turbidity, suspended paniculate matter (SPM) distribution and mineral characteristics were investigated to explain spatial distribution of the turbid-water environment of Yongdam reservoir in July, 2005. Six stations were selected along a longitudinal axis of the reservoir and sampling was conducted in four depths of each station. Water temperature was showed the typical stratified structure by the effects of irradiance and inflow. Content of inorganic matter in suspended particles increased with the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) due to the reduction of ash-free dry matter (AFDM). Turbidity ranged from 0.6 to 95.1 NTU and the maximum turbidity value of each station sharply increased toward downstream from upstream. The high turbidity layers were located at the depth between 12~16 m. Particle size ranged from 0.435 to $482.9{\mu}m$. day and silt-sized particles corresponded 91.9~98.9% and 1.1~8.0% in total numbers of SPM, respectively. Turbidity showed high correlations with clay (r=0.763, p<0.05) and silt content (r=0.870, p<0.05).Inorganic matter content (r=0.960, p<0.01) was more correlated with turbidity than organic matter (r=0.823, p<0.05). Mineral characterization using x-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalyzer demonstrated that the major minerals contained in the SPM were kaolinite, illite, vermiculite and smectite. As results of this study, surface water discharge as well as small size of the SPM were suggested as long-term interfering factors in settling down the turbid water in the reservoir.
Coastal water including estuaries has distinctive environmental characteristics where sediments are transported and deposited by flowing river water, providing an environment in which fluid mud layers can be formed. Acoustic method is mostly used to detect or monitor the fluid mud layer. However, since sound propagating in this layer suffers severe attenuation, it is important to estimate the accurate attenuation coefficient for various concentrations of fluid mud layer for the successful use of the acoustic method. In this paper, measurement results of attenuation coefficient for 3.5, 5, and 7.5 MHz ultrasounds were presented. The measurements were made in a small-size water tank in which suspended sediment samples with various sediment concentrations were formed using kaolinite powder. The results were compared to the model predictions obtained by attenuation coefficient model in which the mean grain size (called as Mass-median-diameter, D50) was used as input parameter. There were reasonable agreements between measured attenuation coefficients and model outputs predicted using the particle range of D50 ${\pm}20%$. The comparison results imply that although the suspended sediments consist of various-sized particles, sound attenuation might be greatly influenced by amount of particle with a size which has a larger attenuation than that of any particle in the suspended sediments for the frequency used.
Total suspended particles were collected and size-fractionated by an Andersen high-volume air sampler at Chungang University located near the Han River, Seoul, Korea, during the period form March, 1986 to August, 1986 and from March, 1987 to February, 1988. The concentrations and the particle size distributions of anions such as chloride, nitrate and sulfate were determined by ion chromatography. The averages of concentrations were $125.43\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1986 and $189.19\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1987 for total suspended particles (TSP), $2.12\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1986 and $4.14\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1987 for chloride, $4.39\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1986 and $5.95\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1987 for nitrate and $11.98\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1986 and $19.29\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in 1987 for sulfate. Size distribution of TSP was found to be generally bimodal. Chloride exhibited a seasonal variation in the distribution; fine particles were predominant in the winter whereas the concentration of coarse ones was almost same through four seasons. Nitrate showed a distribution similar to that of chloride. Such variation was less significant for sulfate. For chloride and nitrate, the relationship between the monthly averaged distribution pattern and air temperature was analyzed in terms of fine fraction (FF). The FF decreased with increasing air temperature.
Total suspended particulate (TSP) in the atmosphere was collected and size-fractionated by Andersen high volume air sampler for the past two years (Mar. 1987-Feb. 1989) in Seoul. The concentrations of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals were determined to investigate the atmospheric concentrations, seasonal variations and its relationship with the size distribution of suspended particulate matter. The arithmetic mean concentration of total suspended particulate was $229.48\;{\mu}g/m^3$. The concentrations of heavy metals were $2971.94\;ng/m^3$ for Fe, $767.75\;ng/m^3$ for Zn, $765.80\;ng/m^3$ for Pb, $218.40\;ng/m^3$ for Cu, $129.91\;ng/m^3$ for Mn, respectively. And the concentration of PAHs were $3.23\;ng/m^3$ for benzo(a)pyrene, $2.71\;ng/m^3$ for benzo(k)fluoranthene, $4.53\;ng/m^3$ for benzo(ghi)perylene, respectively. The mass-size distribution of TSP was lowest in the particle size range $1.1-3.3\;{\mu}m$ increased as the particle size increased or decreased. But PAHs, Pb and Zn abounded in particles below $2.0\;{\mu}m$, while Fe and Mn abouned in particles above $2.0\;{\mu}m$. TSP and its chemical compositions showed the seasonal variations. The concentrations of anthrophogenic origin like TSP, PAH and heavy metals in the fine particles were highest in winter and lowest in summer. PAH and Ph analyzed showed significant correlations with each other and with TSP concentration in fine particles, indicating that the particles in which they are contained have a similar behavior in the atmosphere.
In the present study, a numerical simulations are investigated in a stirred solid/liquid system by using Eulerian multi-phase model. The transient flow field of liquid phase and distribution of solid particles are predicted in stirred tanks consisting of 4-pitched paddles impeller and baffles. The effects of number and width of baffles on the mixing time and the quality of solid suspension in a stirred tank are presented numerically. The result shows that the mixing time decreases as the width and number of baffles increase.

In the present study, numerical simulations were performed in a stirred solid/liquid system by using Eulerian multi-phase model. The transient flow field of liquid and distribution of solid particles were predicted in the stirred tank with pitched paddle impeller and baffles. The Frozen rotor method is adopted to consider the rotating motion of the impeller. The effects of number and width of baffles on the mixing time and the quality of solid suspension in the stirred tank are presented numerically. The result shows that the mixing time decreases as the width and number of baffles increase. The present numerical methodology can be applied to optimizing mixing condition of industrial mixer.
