Geophysical Surveys for Mapping of the AMD Contaminant Channels at an Abandoned Mine (폐광산의 AMD 오염영역탐지를 위한 지구물리탐사)

  • Geophysical surveys (electrical resistivity, self-potential, and magnetic methods) and streamwater sample analysis have been carried out at a site of tailings of waste deposits in an abandoned mine, Jangpoong, which is situated in Kowesan-Gun, Chungbuk-Do. The research was aimed at investigating the suitability of the various geophysical methods for detection of AMD (acid mine drainage) paths, and ultimately mapping of preferred AMD flow channels by incorporating the water sample analysis. Electrical resistivity section from the dipole-dipole line represents the low-resistivity zone trending northwest toward the stream nearby. The positions of the resistivity anomalies for AMD channels are well correlated to the ones from the various geophysical surveys. In addition they correspond to the sites of the higher peaks for the pH, EC, heavy metal content for the water sample data.

An Interpretation of Hydrogeologic Structure Using Geophysical Data from Chungwon Area, Chungcheongbuk-Do (물리탐사자료를 이용한 수리지질구조 해석 -충청북도 청원지역)

  • A set of geophysical survey results over an area in Bookil-myun, Chungwon-Gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do is presented; resistivity logging, d.c. sounding, dipole-dipole resistivity, and controlled-source magnetotelluric (CSMT) surveys. These surveys were chosen in this research for the estimation of the basement depth and the delineation of the hydrogeologic structure over the survey area. The results provide an optimal input to a hydrogeologic modeling analysis using the strategies built in GIS software. A total of 14 lines of dipole-dipole resistivity surveys, 25 stations of d.c. sounding and 6 stations of CSMT sounding were performed. In addition 10 boreholes were chosen for resistivity logging to correlate the logs to the surface data. A quantitative information on the hydrogeologic structure over the area is provided by synthesizing the results from various geophysical data and attribute layers are constructed by utilizing a GIS software Arc/ Info. The constructed layers match well to the hydrogeologic structures, which were outlined from the drilling data. The methodology tested and adopted in this study would be useful for providing a more reliable input to the hydrogeologic model setup.

High-resolution seismic reflection surveying at paved areas using an S-wave type land streamer

  • High-resolution S-wave reflection surveying has been successfully conducted on paved areas using a Land Streamer originally designed by the author. The main feature of the Land Streamer tool is the non-stretch woven belt on which geophone units are mounted to form a multichannel geophone array similar to a marine streamer. Because it is easily towed by a vehicle or by hand, the tool leads to high performance in field measurements and resultant cost-effectiveness of high-resolution reflection surveys. Although each geophone unit is coupled to the pavement through a metallic baseplate instead of being firmly planted in the ground, the Land Streamer tool provides comparatively clean data, unaffected by traffic noise even on the pavement. Thus, the tool is capable of expanding the opportunity for S-wave reflection surveys in urban areas where many surfaces are paved and traffic noise is severe. A series of high-resolution S-wave reflection surveys on paved areas delineated detailed structures of surface layers shallower than 60 m, and proved the wide applicability of the tool to engineering, environmental applications, and earthquake disaster prevention projects.

Very-Far Remote Reference Magnetotelluric Surveys across the Hemispheres

  • 2-D MT surveys at the Century mine in Australia have been performed with very far remote reference in Esashi, Japan as well as Gregory Downs, which are roughly 6400 km and 80 km apart from the field site, respectively. Long period pulsations observed in this survey generally showed dominant $H_x$ polarization than $H_y$; $H_x$ component is more than 3 times stronger than $H_y$ component. Polarity reversal in magnetic field pointing east ($H_y$ component) has also been observed in long period pulsations, while $H_x$ component remain coherent between the hemispheres. Though $H_x$ component shows relatively good coherency than $H_y$ component between the hemispheres at frequencies lower than 0.01 Hz, it seems rather too far to be used as a remote reference for ordinary MT frequency band.

  • The present status of utilizing statistics and problems in the era of information and localization are summarized and the developing process in a computerized survey is investigated. Also, characteristics and development plans of the internet surveys to come, which can substitute for telephone surveys, are discussed. We introduced small area estimation for producing the local statistics and suggested the standardization of statistics of improve statistics use and avoid misunderstanding in various areas of studies.

  • Deep surveys at mid-infared through submillimeter wavelengths indicate that a substantial fraction of the total luminosity output from galaxies at high redshift (z > 1) emerges at wavelengths 30 - 300${\mu}m$. In addition, much of the star formation and AGN activity associated with galaxy building at these epochs appears to reside in a class of luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs), often so heavily enshrouded in dust that they appear as 'blank-fields' in deep optical/UV surveys. Here we present an update on the state of our current knowledge of the cosmic evolution of LIGs from z = 0 to z $\~$ 4 based on the most recent data obtained from ongoing ground-based redshift surveys of sources detected in ISO and SCUBA deep fields. A scenario for the origin and evolution of LIGs in the local Universe (z < 0.3), based on results from multiwavelength observations of several large complete samples of luminous IRAS galaxies, is then discussed.

  • NASA, NSF and USGS jointly conducted LIDAR surveys to acquire numerous surface points with high densities over the Antarctic Dry Valleys and its vicinity. The huge set of the points unusually includes many blunders, retaining large variation of the point densities. Hence, to reduce the undesirable effects due to these characteristics and process the huge number of points with reasonable time and resources, we developed an efficient, robust, nearly automatic approach to DEM generation. This paper reports about the application of this approach to generating high-resolution precise DEMs from the Antarctic LIDAR surveys and the evaluation of their accuracy.

Implications of full-scale building motion experience for serviceability design

  • While there are a number of guidelines used throughout the world in the assessment of acceptability of tall building accelerations, none are based on systematically conducted surveys of occupant reaction to wind-induced motion. In this study, occupant response data were gathered by both a self-reporting mechanism and by interviewer-conducted surveys in control tower structures over a period of four years. These two approaches were designed in conjunction with experimental psychologists to ensure unbiased reporting. The data allowed analysis of perception thresholds and tolerability at different building frequencies and in different wind climates. The long-term nature of the studies also allowed an investigation of the causes and effects of adaptation to building motion. As the surveys were designed to allow multiple use during single storms, the effects of exposure duration were investigated. A final exit survey was conducted at the primary survey location to investigate views of the acceptability of wind-induced motion and the factors underlying these views. The findings of the field studies indicate that none of the currently used acceleration guidelines address all of the factors that contribute to occupant dissatisfaction. An alternative framework for assessing acceleration acceptability is proposed.

  • The study identifies the importance of informational and legislative support in ensuring gender equality. It determines the relevance of gender inequality, the main problem, which is confirmed by research and statistical information. The study aims to determine the methods of collecting information and legal regulation of gender issues and the possibility of solving them by public authorities. The main methods of gathering information are census surveys, questionnaires, surveys on public service websites, work with local communities, surveys in nursing homes and orphanages, special survey programs, and election polls. The paper considers the legal regulation of gender inequalities at the international, state, local and organizational levels. According to the analysis of the problem of gender inequality, it is established that the problem is practically eliminated in many developed countries, while countries with low incomes face gender inequality constantly.

Proposal to Revise the Screening Test for Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Close Contacts at Elementary Schools in Korea

  • The 2018 National Guideline for Tuberculosis Control, which was published by the Korea Centers for Diseases Prevention and Control (KCDC), mandates conducting an epidemiological survey among close contacts of active tuberculosis patients at public institutions such as schools. In the procedure for these surveys, the tuberculin skin test (TST) is mandated as the screening test for latent tuberculosis infection in elementary school students. However, several guidelines recommend using the interferon-gamma releasing assay (IGRA) for contacts aged over 5 years with a Bacillus Calmette-$Gu{\acute{e}}rin$ vaccination history. The main reason for this is that IGRA has a higher specificity and lower false positive rate than TST. In addition, IGRA requires only a single visit to draw blood and the results are available within 24 hours. These advantages could promote cooperation from both parents and students in conducting these surveys. Thus, these findings regarding the benefits of IGRA for surveys of close contacts at elementary schools should be incorporated into the KCDC guideline.
