This study investigated the improvement effect of a small portion of surfactant on the supercooling and the phase change temperature of TMA 30 wt% clathrate compound when surfactant is added to the clathrate compound. The experiments are carried out under various conditions; the concentration of additive ranges between 0.08~0.12 wt% and the temperature of heat source ranges between -8 and -6$^{\circ}C$. The experimental results show that the phase change temperature with the surfactant of 0.1 wt% is lower by 1$^{\circ}C$ than TMA 30 wt% and the supercooling is reduced by 1$0^{\circ}C$.

This Study has treated the effects of fiber, surfactants, temperature, surfactant concentration, pH, electrolyte, fatty acid contents and mechanical force on the removal of particulate soil from fabric, vacuum cleaner dirt was used as model particulate soil. The fabrics were soiled with mixture of vacuum cleaner dirt and fatty soil, and washed in Terg-O-tometer. The detergency was evaluated by measuring reflectance of a fabric before and after washing. The results were as follows. 1. The fiber type showed a different pattern of soil removal with surfactants. In general, particulate soil removal increased in the following order Acetate>PET. Nylon>Cotton. Particulate soil removal, which is affected by the surfactant type, increased in the following order NPE $(EO)_{10}\leqq$Soap>SLS>DBS>Tween 80. 2. The influence of temperature on the particulate soil removal was very complex because efficiency of removal was varied with surfactant and fiber types. The washing efficiency of NPE $(EO)_{10}$ was highest at around $40^{\circ}C\;and\;60^{\circ}C$ with cotton and PET but the washing efficiency of DBS was the highest at $60^{\circ}C$ with cotton, decreased monotonously with increasing temperature with PET 3. The detergency of particulate soil increased with increasing surfactant concentration at relatively low concentration and then levelled off above some optimum concentration. 4. The removal of particulate soil increased with increasing pH and mechanical force. 5. Effect of electrolyte on the particulate soil removal was depended on the concentration of the surfactant. At low concentration of surfactant, addition of electrolytes improved soil removal but above the some concentration no effect was observed. At high concentration of surfactant, Vie., $0.6\%$ , the maximum washing effect is reached without added electrolyte. These result indicate that added electrolyte only influence the adsorption of surfactant on the soil and fiber 6. Fatty acid content in the soil did not influence on particulate soil removal without regard to surfactants.
A kinetic model for evaluating effects of surfactant on the biodegradation of HOC(hazardous organic chemicals) in soil-slurry systems was developed. The model includes the partition of HOC and surfactant, the dissolved-, micellar-, and sorbed-phase biodegradation, the enhanced solubilization of HOC by surfactant addition, and the mass transfer of HOC. Phenanthrene as HOC and Trition X-100, Tergitol NP-10, Igepal CA-720, and Brij 30 were used in the model simulations. The biodegradation rate was increased even with a small micellera-phase bioavailability. The biodegradation was not greatly enhanced due to decreased aqueous HOC concentration by increasing surfactant dose in both cases with and without micellar-phase bioavailability. The effect of sorbed-phase biodegradation on total biodegradation rate was not highly important compared to aqueous- and micellar-phase biodegradation. The model can be applied for surfactant screening and optimal design of surfactant-based soil bioremediation process.
Partitioning of two hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs), phenanthrene and naphthalene, to kaolinite and sorbed surfactants was studied to evaluate the feasibility of surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) of contaminated subsurface systems. Sorbed surfactant partition coefficients. $K_ss$, showed a strong dependence on the surfactant sorption isotherms at low sorbed surfactant levels $K_ss$ values were at their highest and then decreased with increasing surfactant sorption densities. $K_ss$ values for SDS were always larger than corresponding $K_mic$values. For Tween 80, however. $K_ss$ values $K_mic$ were higher than $K_mic$ values only at the lower sorbed surfactant densities. HOC distribution between immobile and mobile phases varied with surfactant dose distribution coefficients increased initially with increasing surfactant concentrations and then decreased at higher doses. This observation shows directly the competition between sorbed and micellar surfactants for HOC partitioning. Overall results of this study demonstrate that surfactant sorption to the solid phase can lead to increases in HOC retardation in some SER applications. Therefore, before an SER process is selected, appropriate consideration of surfactant sorption and HOC partitioning to immobile versus mobile phases pertinent to a specific subsurface system must be contemplated.

Solubilization and partitioning of naphthalene was investigated in an aqueous system containing soils and surfactants. The environmental behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) was mainly governed by their solubility and partitioning properties on soil media in a subsurface system. In surfactant-enhanced remediation systems, surfactants might be an additional variable. a natural soil ,silica and kaolinite were tested as soil media. two nonionic surfactants, Triton X-100 and Hydropropy1-$\beta$-cyclodextrin (HPCD) were employed for naphthalene solubilization. Naphthalene showed linear on natural soil while non-linear sorption on silica and kaolinite. Soils have higher sorption capacity for Triton X-100 than HPCD indicating Triton X-100 formed ad-micelle on the soil surface. Desorption study showed a hysterysis and reversible desorption. The partitioning coefficient(K$_{D}$) of naphthalene was increased as the concentration of surfactant was increased. (below CMC), however, the coefficient was decreased above CMC. This indicates that naphthalene is partitioned into the micelles and the partition occurs competitively on both ad-micelle and free micelles as surfactant concentration increases. Therefore, the target compounds to be dissolved into aqueous phase in a surfactant enhanced remediation system might be highly partitioned on to the ad-micelle resulting in an adverse effect rather increased solubilization would be achieved.d.

The drag reduction (DR) and heat transfer efficiency reduction (ER) of non-ionic surfactant were investigated as a function of fluid velocity, temperature, and surfactant concentration. An experimental apparatus consisting of two temperature controlled water storage tanks, pumps, test specimen pipe and the piping network, two flow meters, two pressure gauges, a heat exchanger, and data logging system was built. From the experimental results, it was concluded that existing alkyl ammonium surfactant (CTAC Cethyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride) had DR of $0.6{\sim}0.8$ at $1,000{\sim}2,000ppm$ concentration with fluid temperature ranging between $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. However, the DR was very low when the fluid temperature was $70{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. The new amine oxide and betaine surfactant(SAOB Stearyl Amine Oxide + Betaine) had lower DR at fluid temperatures ranging between $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ compared with CTAC. However, with fluid temperature ranging between $70{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ the DR was $0.6{\sim}0.8$ when the concentration level was $1,000{\sim}2,000ppm$.

This study investigates the effect of mixed characteristics of oily soil such as mixed ratio, polarity of oily soil on contact angle of fabric, removal of oily and particulate soil from PET fabric in oily/particulate soil mixed system. The contact angle of fabric in the surfactant solution with suspended oily soil was examined as a fundamental environment of detergency of soil from fabrics. Detergency was investigated as function of mixed ratios of oily/ particulate soil, type of oily soil, surfactants concentration, surfactant type and temperature of detergency in surfactant solution. The contact angle of fabric in surfactant solution sharply increased with mixing nonpolar oily soil; in addition, the contact angle slightly increased with increasing contents of oily soil and decreased with increasing surfactant concentration. The removal of oily and particulate soil from fabric was higher in the solution mixed with polar versus nonpolar oily soil. The detergency increased with increasing surfactant concentration and the increased temperature of surfactants solution that were relatively improved in NPE compared to DBS solutions, The results indicated that the detergency of oily and particulate soil showed a similar trend in oily/ particulate mixed soil systems. The general contact angle of fabric was well related with the detergency of oily and particulate soil in oily/particulate mixed soil system, therefore, the primary factor determining the detergency of soil in oily/particulate mixed soil system may be the contact angle of fabric caused by wettability.
A zwitterionic surfactant shows not only detergency but also mildness effect since it shows characteristics of a nonionic or an anionic surfactant above an isoelectric point, while showing characteristics of a cationic surfactant below an isoelectric point. Therefore, a zwitterionic surfactant can serve as a dual function surfactant by a single molecule through the interconversion of cleaning and softening effects depending on pH variations of the aqueous solution. In this study, physical properties of betaine surfactant such as CMC, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle and viscosity were measured and phase behavior study was performed. Also dual function characteristics of betaine zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by measuring an isoelectric point using QCM(quartz crystal microbalance) and zeta potential measurement. The CMC of betaine surfactant was near $10^{-4}mol/L$ and the surface tension at CMC was about 32 mN/m. The interfacial tension between 1 wt% aqueous solution and n-decane measured by spinning drop tensiometer at pH 2~10 resulted in an increase in interfacial tension until pH 5 and a decrease with pH after 5 and equilibration time showed the similar trend with an increase in pH. The isoelectric point of betaine surfactant measured by QCM experiment was found to exist between 3.0 and 3.3, which is the same as the result determined by zeta potential measurement.
To enhance the washing efficiency of soil polluted by hydrophobic organic compounds, the effects of electrolytes and monomeric organic additives on micelle formation and washing efficiency of mixed surfactant solutions were investigated in this study. The surface tensions and critical micelle concentrations(CMCs) of the single and mixed surfactant solutions[$POE_5$/SDS] supplemented by NaCl were measured to investigate the effects on washing efficiency, and the composition ratios of surfactants and NaCl were optimized for the efficient soil washing system. As the mixing ratio of $POE_5$/SDS was increased to 80%, the mixed surfactant with 0.01M NaCl showed more proportional increase of washing efficiency than the mixed surfactant without any salts. The 3% solution of $POE_5$ and SDS(80%/2o%) with 0.01M NaCl showed the washing efficiency of 90%. However, the washing efficiency was not enhanced by NaCl addition to the single surfactant solution of $POE_5$. The CMC of SDS(0.049%) was higher than that of $POE_5$(0.016%), but the CMCs of mixed surfactants were decreased as the mixing ratio of $POE_5$ was increased. Alcohols having longer chain and branched carbon chain were found to be desirable for the soil washing additives.
A zwitterionic surfactant shows not only detergency but also softening effect since it shows characteristics of a nonionic or an anionic surfactant above an isoelectric point, while showing characteristics of a cationic surfactant below an isoelectric point. Therefore, a zwitterionic surfactant can serve as a dual function surfactant by a single molecule through the interconversion of cleaning and softening effects depending on pH of the aqueous solution. In this study, the dual function characteristics of an amine oxide zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by measuring the zeta potential and the isoelectric point using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). In addition, the physical properties of an amine oxide surfactant such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle and viscosity were measured and phase behavior study was also performed. The isoelectric point of an amine oxide surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was near 7.35 and that obtained by QCM experiment was about 7.4, where both results were found to be close to the value reported in the literature.
