In this study, a radiation and a diffraction problems of a floating body in two-layer fluids were solved by the Numerical Wave Tank(NWT) technique in the frequency domain. In two-layer fluids, two different wave modes exist and the hydrodynamic coefficients can be obtained separately for each mode. The two-domain Boundary Element Method(BEM) in the potential fluid using the whole-domain matrix scheme was used to investigate the characteristics of wave forces, added mass and damping coefficients. The effects of the ratio of density and water depth in the lower domain were also evaluated and compared with given references.
Inversion of multi-mode surface-wave phase velocity for shallow engineering site investigation has received much attention in recent years. A sensitivity analysis and inversion of both synthetic and field data demonstrates the greater effectiveness of this method over employing the fundamental mode alone. Perturbation of thickness and shear-wave velocity parameters in multi-modal Rayleigh wave phase velocities revealed that the sensitivities of higher modes: (a) concentrate in different frequency bands, and (b) are greater than the fundamental mode for deeper parameters. These observations suggest that multi-mode phase velocity inversion can provide better parameter discrimination and imaging of deep structure, especially with a velocity reversal, than can inversion of fundamental mode data alone. An inversion of the theoretical phase velocities in a model with a low velocity layer at 20 m depth can only image the soft layer when the first higher mode is incorporated. This is especially important when the lowest measurable frequency is only 6 Hz. Field tests were conducted at sites surveyed by borehole and PS logging. At the first site, an array microtremor survey, often used for deep geological surveying in Japan, was used to survey the soil down to 35 m depth. At the second site, linear multichannel spreads with a sledgehammer source were recorded, for an investigation down to 12 m depth. The f-k power spectrum method was applied for dispersion analysis, and velocities up to the second higher mode were observed in each test. The multi-mode inversion results agree well with PS logs, but models estimated from the fundamental mode alone show f large underestimation of the depth to shallow soft layers below artificial fill.

It is very important to detect and evaluate the surface or subsurface flaws because of their influences on mechanical properties of materials. Rayleigh wave and creeping wave are commonly used for the detection of surface and subsurface flaws. These techniques, however, have following problems. Each amplitudes are remarkably affected by the surface condition and evaluation of echo pattern is usually difficult because shear wave mode propagate in the material at the same time. On the other hand, surface SH-wave which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface layer is an attractive technique for the surface or subsurface material characterization and this technique is useful to solve the problems mentioned above. In this paper, The stability and transmission coefficient of SH waves through a viscous fluid layer is theoretically studied and simulated. Its results agreed well with the theoretical expectation for the experimental verification. These experimental results show that viscosity of couplants, thickness of couplant and surface roughness are closely related to transfer efficiency in surface SH angle beam method.
Surface wave techniques are widely used as non-invasive method for geotechnical site characterization. Field surface wave data are collected and analyzed using different processing techniques to generate the dispersion curves, which are further used to extract the shear wave velocity profile by inverse problem solution. Characteristics of a dispersion curve depend on the subsurface layering information of a vertically heterogeneous medium. Sometimes soft layer can be found between two stiff layers in the vertically heterogeneous media, and it can affect the wave propagation dramatically. Now most of the surface wave techniques use the fundamental mode Rayleigh wave propagation during the inversion, but this may not be the actual scenario when a soft layer is present in a vertically layered medium. This paper presents a detailed and comprehensive study using finite element method to examine the effect of soft layers which sometimes get trapped between two high velocity layers. Determination of the presence of a soft layer is quite important for proper mechanical characterization of a soil deposit. Present analysis shows that the thickness and position of the trapped soft layer highly influence the dispersion of Rayleigh waves while the higher modes also contribute in the resulting wave propagation.

This paper describes a theoretical model and acoustic analysis of hysteresis of contacting surfaces subject to compression pressure. Contacting surfaces known to be nonlinear and hysteretic is considered as a simple spring that has a complex stiffness connecting discontinuous displacements between two solid contact boundaries. Mathematical formulation for 1-D interfacial wave propagation between two contacting solids is developed using the complex spring model to derive the dispersion relation between the interface wave speed and the complex interfacial stiffness. Existence of the interface wave propagating along the hysteretic interface is studied in theory and discussed by investigating the solution to the dispersion equation. Unlike the linear interface without hysteresis, there can exist only one distinct mode of interface waves for the hysteretic interface, which is anti-symmetric motion. The anti-symmetric mode of interface wave propagates with the velocity faster than the Rayleigh surface wave but less than the shear wave depending on the interfacial stiffness. If the contacting surfaces are compressed so much that the linear interfacial stiffness is very high, the hysteretic stiffness does not affect the interface wave velocity. However, it has an effect on the speed of interface wave for a loosely contact surfaces with a relatively low linear stiffness. It is also found that the phase velocity of anti-symmetric wave mode converges to the shear wave velocity in despite of the linear stiffness value if the hysteretic stiffness approaches 0.5.

In this paper, we proposed the dual-mode stepped impedance ring resonator bandpass filter for MMIC (Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuit) applications using the dielectric-supported air-gapped microstrip line (DAML). The ring resonator fabricated by surface micromachining technology. This filter consists of a DAML resonator layer and a CPW feed line. The DAML ring resonator is elevated with $10{\mu}m$ height from GaAs substrate surface. This bandpass filter is $1-{\lambda}g$ type stepped impedance ring resonator including dual-mode resonance. From the measurements, we obtained attenuation of over 15 dB and insertion loss of 2.65 dB at the center frequency of 97 GHz. Relative bandwidth is about 12 % at 97 GHz. Furthermore, the proposed bandpass filter is useful to integrate with conventional MMICs.
Sapphire resonators with $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) endplates have provided a way to realize extremely high quality factor due to the extremely low dielectric loss of sapphire and conductive loss of YBCO films, which enables to measure the low surface resistance of superconductor films at microwave frequencies. We present microwave properties of HTS sapphire resonators designed for measuring the surface resistance of HTS films at millimeter-wave frequencies by using the two-resonance mode dielectric resonator method. Despite enhanced surface resistance ($R_S$) of YBCO films due to the quadratic frequency dependence of the $R_S$, the unloaded quality factor ($Q_0$) of the $TE_{021}$ mode sapphire resonator still appears to be well above $1\;{\times}\;10^6$ at a mm-wave frequency of 38 GHz at 10 K. However, it appears that the $TE_{012}$ mode $Q_0$ is unexpectedly low despite that the corresponding resonance peak looks uncoupled with parasitic modes. We discuss possible reasons for the unexpected results using the surface resistance at the $TE_{021}$, $TE_{012}$, and $TE_{011}$ mode frequencies.
The objective of this study is to examine the nonlinear fluid characteristics near and inside a moonpool in various sea conditions. We estimate the flow of the free surface in a moonpool taking into account the viscosity effect and the hydrodynamic forces that affects a moonpool and hull through CFD calculations. The comparison of horizontal forces per wave length shows that the hydrodynamic force is greater for the long wave length than short wave length, and the greatest hydrodynamic force acts on the moonpool when the wave length is equal to the ship's length. The horizontal force decreases as the wave amplitude decreases, and the hydrodynamic force acting on the moonpool in ${\lambda}=LBP$ is 10 times that in ${\lambda}=LBP/3$. The free surface demonstrates the piston mode, in which it oscillates up and down while remaining essentially flat, and the rise of the free surface level increases as the wave length increases. We can assume that the hydrodynamic force acting on the moonpool increases owing to the effect of a strong vortex for ${\lambda}=LBP$ and owing to the rise of the free surface level for ${\lambda}=LBP{\times}2$.
Time series of suspended sediment concentration, surface elevation and velocity were measured and analysed to investigate the role of waves and the predominance of infra-gravity wave component for sediment suspension phenomena in the surf zone. For the investigation in detail, we adopted the cross spectral analysis method between suspended sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave, and ensemble average analysis method about long-period wave component, which is dominant to sediment suspension in the measurement point. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1)The relationship between suspended sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave is stronger for the long-period standing wave components(about 60s and 30s where the nodal point of the first mode and the anti-nodal point of the second mode are located at the measurement point, respectively) than the long wave components(about 100s), which have the most energetic power, 2) and also, it is cleared that suspended sediment concentration is increased in the case of the phase, the velocity components of the first mode long-period standing wave(60sec) were accelerated toward on-shore direction, that is, the water surface in offshore side is higher than on-shore side.
In this paper surface acoustic wave beam track changers using symmetric multistrip coupler are designed on the basis of the perturbation theory, and its characteristics are studied. SAW beam track changers, which have the configuratio of the periodic array of metal strips, are designed with the following specifications ; the number of strips : 140, the strip period: 0.25λ, the ratios of the strip width to the period a/p: 0.5, 0.375, 0.25, respectively, and approximately consistent with the theoretical values, and also the bulk wave mode and the 2nd-order effects are suppressed by these track changers.
