We developed a novel polarization filter to separate linearly polarized waves from elliptically polarized waves in an infinite homogeneous medium and at the free surface using methods of multicomponent complex trace analysis. Sensitivity to filter parameters were examined using synthetic data simulating particle motions in a homogeneous medium. For known amplitude ratios of horizontal-to-vertical components of P and Rayleigh waves $C_L$ and $C_R$, respectively, the polarization filter precisely removes Rayleigh waves. Errors in the vertical and horizontal components of the filtered results increase with the ratio $C_R$/$C_L$ and the product $C_R$.$C_L$, respectively. The vertical component errors also increase rapidly as the ratios of applied-to-modeled values of $C_L$ and $C_R$ ($C_L'$/$C_L$ and $C_R'$/$C_R$) decrease, and are sensitive to $C_R'$/$C_R$ and $C_L'$/$C_L$ for small and large incidence angles, respectively. Errors of the filter are exactly the same for shear waves when the incidence angle is the supplementary of P-wave incidence angle.

Generally, for conventional 3-D Hall sensor it is general that the sensitivity for $B_z$ is about 1/10 compared with those for $B_x$ or $B_y$. Therefore, in this work, we proposed 3-D Hall sensor with new structures. We have increased the sensitivity about 6 times to form the trench using anisotropic etching. And we have increased the sensitivity for the $B_z$ by 80 % compared with those of $B_x$ and $B_y$ using deposition of the ferromagnetic thin films on the bottom surface of the wafer to concentrate the magnetic fluxes. Sensitivities of the fabricated sensor with Ni/Fe film for $B_x,\;B_y$, and $B_z$ were measured as 361mV/T, 335mV/T, and 286mV/T, respectively. It has also showed sine wave of Hall voltages over a $360^{\circ}$ rotation. A packaged sensing part was $1.2{\times}1.2mm^2$. The measured linearity of the sensor was within ${\pm}3%$ of error. Resolution of the fabricated sensor was measured by $1{\times}10^{-5}T$.
Cement composites subjected to high-velocity projectile shows local failure and it can be suppressed by improvement of flexural toughness with reinforcement of fiber. Therefore, researches on impact resistance performance of cement composites are in progress and a number of types of fiber reinforcement are being developed. Since bonding properties of fiber with matrix, specific surface area and numbers of fiber are different by fiber reinforcement type, mechanical properties of fiber reinforced cement composites and improvement of impact resistance performance need to be considered. In this study, improvement of flexural toughness and failure reduction effect by impact of high-velocity projectile have been evaluated according to fiber type by mixing steel fiber, polyamide, nylon and polyethylene which are have different shape and mechanical properties. As results, flexural toughness was improved by redistribution of stress and crack prevention with bridge effect of reinforced fibers, and scabbing by high-velocity impact was suppressed. Since it is possible to decrease scabbing limit thickness from impact energy, thickness can be thinner when it is applied to protection. Scabbing of steel fiber reinforced cement composites was occurred and it was observed that desquamation of partial fragment was suppressed by adhesion between fiber and matrix. Scabbing by high-velocity impact of synthetic fiber reinforced cement composites was decreased by microcrack, impact wave neutralization and energy dispersion with a large number of fibers.

Organic insulating materials which are utilized as insulating materials for the low voltage show unique carbonization characteristics when they are carbonized by a leakage current. Therefore the use of the carbonization characteristics makes it possible to examine the electrical fire which is caused by a leakage current flowing on the surface of the organic insulating material. In order to understand such carbonization characteristics, in this paper, experiments have been done to carbonize typical organic insulating materials such as phenol resin, PVC, and acrylic resin, and the carbonization patterns and the IR absorption spectrum of specimens have been analyzed. According to the analysis of the carbonization patterns, the phenol resin shows the so-called 'spider-leg' carbonization pattern due to a thermosetting property. In contrast to the phenol resin, the thermoplastic property makes it difficult to observe a clear carbonization pattern to verify carbonizing causes on the surfaces of PVC and acrylic resins. In this case, the IR absorption spectrum can be analyzed to examine the specimen carbonized by a leakage current. The analysis result shows that absorption peaks appear at the wave numbers of $3,400[cm^{-1}]$ and $1,618[cm^{-1}]$, which can be an important factor to verify the carbonizing causes.

In order to investigate the velocity structure of the southern part of the Korean peninsula, exploded seismic signals were recorded for 120 s along a 294-km WNW-ESE line and 150 s along a 335-km NNW-SSE line in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Velocity tomograms were derived from inverting first arrival times. One-dimensional velocity models derived by joint analyses of teleseismic receiver functions and surface wave dispersion at several stations near the profiles were uesd to build initial models. The
raypaths indicate several midcrust interfaces including ones at approximate depths of 2.0 and 14.9 km with refraction velocities of approximately 6.0 and 7.1 km/s, respectively. The deepest significant interface varies in depth from 30.8 km to 36.1 km. The critically refracting velocity varies from 7.8 to 8.1 km/s along this interface which may correspond to the Moho discontinuity. The velocity tomograms show (1) existence of a low-velocity zone centered at 6-7 km depth under the Okchon fold belt, (2) extension
of the Yeongdon fault down to greater than 10 km, and (3) existence of high-velocity materials under the Gyeongsan basin whose thickness is less than 4.2 km.

The first crustal refraction survey in the Korean Peninsula was carried out over the survey line connecting Seosan-Yeongdong-Kyeongiu on Dec. 15, 2002. The total length of the survey line was about 300 Km and 198 portable seismometers were deployed with approximately 1.5-km interval. The survey line itself was geologically important since it was almost normal to the so-called Sino-Korean structural trend. Two shots, one at Seosan (west end point) and the other at Yeongdong (mid-point), were exploded. They were 100-m deep drill well explosions. The Seosan shot consisted of a ton emulsion type explosive, while Youngdong consisted of 500 kg one. Both shots generated signals with good S/N ratios to the farthest receivers. Seismic signals were recorded by 195 receivers out of 198 ones. Although the originally planned Kyeongju shot (east end point) could not be exploded due to public discontent, the experiment was evaluated very successful. First breaks in all recorded traces were picked up and two preliminary analyses were carried out. The one is conventional flat layer analysis and the other was refraction tomographic analysis. The one resulted in average 32-km thick two-layer crust and the underlying mantle with 8.05-km/s P-velocity. The top crust layer with 3.86 kw/s P-velocity was 2.5-km thick and the lower crust layer with 6.0l km/s P-velocity was 29.5-km thick. The other resulted in a velocity cross-section. The confidence level of the velocity cross-section could not be evaluated at this time because only two shot were exploded. Detailed analyses such as surface wave dispersion are on going. Continuing crustal scale refraction surveys are planned in Korea.
Ground motion models predicting intensity measures on surface use a time-averaged shear wave velocity, VS30, as a key variable simulating site effect. The VS30 can be directly estimated from VS profiles if the profile depth (z) is greater than or equal to 30 m. However, some sites have VS profiles with z < 30 m. In this case VS30 can be predicted using extension models. This study proposes new coefficient sets for existing prediction equations using 297 Korea VS profiles. We have collected VS profiles from KMA and Geoinfo database. Fitting six existing methods to data, we suggest new coefficients for each method and evaluate their performance. It turns out that if z ≥ 15 m, the standard deviation (σ) of residual in log10 is 0.061, which indicates that the estimated VS30 is nearly accurate. If z < 15 m, the σ keeps increasing up to 0.1 for z = 5 m, so we caution the use of models at very low z. Nonetheless, we recommend investigating up to 30 m depth for VS30 calculation if possible.
Vibration propagated from seismic sources has damping according to distance and amplification and reduction characteristic in different regions according to topography and geological structure. The vibration propagated from the seismic source to the bedrock is largely affected by the damping according to the separation distance, which can be simply estimated through the damping equation. However, it is important to grasp geological information by location because vibration estimation transmitted to the surface are affected by the natural period of the soil located above the bedrock. Geotechnical investigation data are needed to estimate the seismic intensity based on geological information. If there is no Vs profile, the standard penetration tests are mainly used to determine the soil parameters. The Integrated DB Center of National Geotechnical Information manages the geotechnical survey data performed on the domestic ground, and there is the standard penetration test information of 400,000 holes. In this study, the possibility of quantitation the amplification coefficient for each region was examined to calculated the physical interactive seismic intensity based on geotechnical information. At this time, the shear wave column diagram was generated from the SPT-N value and ground response analysis was performed in the target area. The site coefficients for each zone and the seismic intensity distribution for the seismic motion present a significant difference according to the analysis method and the regional setting.

In this study, welding of pure titanium was carried out by using a continuous wave fiber laser with a maximum output of 6.3 kW. Because brittle regions form easily in titanium as a result of oxidation or nitriding, the weld must be protected from the atmosphere by using an appropriate shielding gas. Experiments were performed by changing the type and the flow rate of shielding gases to obtain the optimal shielding condition, and the weldability was then evaluated. The degree of oxidation and nitriding was distinguished by observing the color of beads, and weld microstructure was observed by using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties of the weld were examined by measuring hardness. When the weld was oxidized or nitrified, the bead color was gray or yellow, and the oxygen or nitrogen content in the bead surface and overall weld tended to be high, as a result of which the hardness of the weld was thrice that of the base metal. A sound silvery white bead was obtained by using Ar as the shielding gas.
This study aims to evaluate the mechanical-chemical stability of used coal ash blocks, for improving fishing grounds. The surface of weathered ash blocks in seawater showed a decrease in the Ca and an increase in the Mg contents, compared to that of fresh blocks. This result reflects the substitution of Ca by Mg in seawater. The compressive strengths of ash blocks submerged into seawater during 12 months ranged from 235.23 to $447.43\;kgf/cm^2$; this is higher than the standard strength of wave-absorbing blocks($180\;kgf/cm^2)$ that are used for harbor construction. In addition, the compressive strength of ash blocks tends to increase with increasing installation time in seawater. The result of leaching experiments on coal ash blocks by Korean Standard Leaching Test(KSLT) method showed that leached concentrations of most metals except Cr(that leached up to 50 ppb, approaching standard concentration) do not exceed the seawater quality standards. A long-term(112 days) heavy metal leaching test to analyze seawater without mixing-dilution also showed that the concentrations of leached heavy metals, except for Cu, under anaerobic conditions do not exceed the seawater quality standards. Accordingly, the use of coal ash blocks in marine environments appears to be safe from chemical and mechanical factors that decrease the efficiency of concrete. Also, leaching concentration of Cu seems to be stable by decrease of leaching concentration due to dilution of seawater.
