Acid drainage has been recognized as an environmental concern in abandoned mine sites for long time. Recently, the environmental and structural damage by acid drainage is a current issue in construction sites in Korea. Here, the author introduces the type of damages by acid drainage in construction sites and emphasizes the importance of geoscience discipline in solving the problem. Metasedimentary rock of Okcheon group, coal bed of Pyeongan group, Mesozoic volcanic rock. and Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks are the major rock types with a high potential for acid drainage upon excavation in Korea. The acid drainage causes the acidification and heavy metal contamination of soil, surface water and groundwater, the reduction of slope stability, the corrosion of slope structure, the damage on plant growth, the damage on landscape and the deterioration of concrete and asphalt pavement. The countermeasure for acid drainage is the treatment of acid drainage and the prevention of acid drainage. The treatment of acid drainage can be classified into active and passive treatments depending on the degree of natural process in the treatment. Removal of oxidants, reduction of oxidant generation and encapsulation of sulfide are employed for the prevention of acid drainage generation.

Using eddy covariance method, net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of $CO_2$ ($F_{CO_2}$), $H_2O$ (LE), and sensible heat (H) can be approximated as the sum of eddy flux ($F_c$) and storage flux term ($F_s$). Depending on strength and distribution of sink/source of scalars and magnitude of vertical turbulence mixing, the rates of changes in scalars are different with height. In order to calculate $F_s$ accurately, the differences should be considered using scalar profile measurement. However, most of flux sites for agricultural lands in Asia do not operate profile system and estimate $F_s$ using single-level scalars from eddy covariance system under the assumption that the rates of changes in scalars are constant regardless of the height. In this study, we measured $F_c$ and $F_s$ of $CO_2$, $H_2O$, and air temperature ($T_a$) using eddy covariance and profile system (i.e., the multi-level measurement system in scalars from eddy covariance measurement height to the land surface) at the Chengmicheon farmland site in Korea (CFK) in order to quantify the differences between $F_s$ calculated by single-level measurements ($F_s_{-single}$ i.e., $F_s$ from scalars measured by profile system only at eddy covariance system measurement height) and $F_s$ calculated by profile measurements and verify the errors of NEE caused by $F_s_{-single}$. The rate of change in $CO_2$, $H_2O$, and Ta were varied with height depending on the magnitudes and distribution of sink and source and the stability in the atmospheric boundary layer. Thus, $F_s_{-single}$ underestimated or overestimated $F_s$ (especially 21% underestimation in $F_s$ of $CO_2$ around sunrise and sunset (0430-0800 h and 1630-2000 h)). For $F_{CO_2}$, the errors in $F_s_{-single}$ generated 3% and 2% underestimation of $F_{CO_2}$ during nighttime (2030-0400 h) and around sunrise and sunset, respectively. In the process of nighttime correction and partitioning of $F_{CO_2}$, these differences would cause an underestimation in carbon balance at the rice paddy. In contrast, there were little differences at the errors in LE and H caused by the error in $F_s_{-single}$, irrespective of time.
BACKGROUND: This study carried out to fate of pesticide and investigate worker exposure of pesticide in air after applying granular type pesticide formulation on soil in greenhouse for preventing farmer's pesticide intoxication. METHODS AND RESULTS: The recovery of pesticide, cadusafos, ethoprophos and probenazole on absorbent in air were ranged 80.9~121.1% in charcoal and 90.6~99.0% in XAD-4, respectively. Emission rate of in lysimeter was higher 3~5 times than that of pesticides from topsoil not added water at $35^{\circ}C$ plot after applying a mixture of granular formulation and soil. The ethoprophos concentration in air, 50 cm high from soil surface at greenhouse, was reached the highest 186.4 ${\mu}g/m^3$ within 13 hours and were ranged 17.8~186.4 ${\mu}g/m^3$ during 46 hours after applying granular formulation at dose rate 150 g a.i./245 $m^2$. The cadusafos concentration in air at greenhouse was reached the highest 37.3 ${\mu}g/m^3$ within 39 hours and were ranged 10.0~37.3 ${\mu}g/m^3$ during 46 hours after applying granular formulation at dose rate 180 g a.i./245 $m^2$. The probenazole concentration in air at greenhouse was reached the highest 1.45 ${\mu}g/m^3$ within 37 hours and were ranged 0.23~1.45 ${\mu}g/m^3$ during 46 hours after applying granular formulation at dose rate 144 g a.i./245 $m^2$. CONCLUSION(s): The result of the reentry interval study demonstrated that reentry intervals for ethoprophos and cadusafos are longer than 48 hours.
The effects of light quality and irradiance on the growth of centric diatom, Skeletonema costatum (Jinhae Bay strain) were investigated in the laboratory. At 20$^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu, the irradiance-growth curve showed the maximum growth rate of 1.17 day$^{-1}$ with half-saturation photon flux density (PFD) (K$_s$) of 92.4 $\mu$mol photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, $\mu$=1.17 (I-5.28)/(I+81.8), (r=0.98), and a compensation PFD (I$_0$) was 5.28 $\mu$mol photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. The 10 equated to a depth of 3$\sim$5 m from March to May, 11 m in June and 4 m from July to September in Jinhae Bay. These responses suggested that irradiance at the depth near the surface layer in Jinhae Bay would provide favorable conditions for S. costatum. To assess the effects of light (i.e. wavelengths) on the growth, nine wave-lengths were used ranging from near ultraviolet to near-infrared supplied by light emitting diode. At an irradiance level of 25 $\mu$mol photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, S. costatum grew under wavelengths of 405, 470, 505, 525, 568 and 644 nm, but did not grow at 590 and 623 nm; whereas S. costatum grew at all wavelengths at 100 $\mu$mol photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. This implies that S. costatum is likely to grow well in enclosed water bodies where suspended particles absorbs most of the blue wavelengths, and dominated by yellow-orange wavelengths.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni) and charcoal supplementation on meat quality traits in finishing pigs. A total of 420 pigs (LYD) were randomly allocated into seven treatments with three replications. The dietary treatments were T1 (control, basal diet), T2 (basal diet+0.3% stevia), T3 (basal diet+0.6% stevia), T4 (basal diet+0.3% charcoal), T5 (basal diet+0.6% charcoal), T6 (basal diet+0.3% stevia+0.3% charcoal), and T7 (basal diet+0.6% stevia+0.6% charcoal). Pigs were slaughtered conventionally on each marketing day and chilled overnigth. At 24 h postmortem, the Longissimus muscle from left side between the 6th and 14th rib was removed for the meat quality traits. The T6 group showed a higher pH, water holding capacity (p<0.05), and lower drip loss (p<0.05) than those in the T1 group. The T6 group showed lower (p<0.05) $L^*$ (lightness) and $b^*$ (yellowness) values and higher $a^*$ (redness) color value than those in the T1 group, resulting in a redder surface meat color. In the subjective evaluation, marbling and color scores improved in the T6 group compared to those in the other treatments. In the panel test, the T6 group tended to have higher tenderness and juiciness scores than those in the T1 group. In the storage characteristics, all treatments showed similar 2-thiobarbituric acid and volatile basic nitrogen values as well as total microbial counts during 7 d of cold storage. As a result, dietary supplementation with 0.3% stevia and 0.3% charcoal showed the highest meat quality traits and storage characteristics in finishing pigs.
Perchlorate (ClO4−) is an emerging pollutant detected in surface water, soil, and groundwater. Previous studies provided experimental evidence of autotrophic ClO4− removal with elemental sulfur (S0) particles and activated sludge, which are inexpensive and easily available, respectively. In addition, ClO4− removal efficiency was shown to increase when an enrichment culture was used as an inoculum instead of activated sludge. PCR-DGGE was employed in the present study to investigate the microbial community in the enrichment culture that removed ClO4− autotrophically. Microorganisms in the enrichment culture showed 99.71% or more ClO4− removal efficiency after a 7-day incubation when the initial concentration was approximately 120 mg ClO4−/l. Genomic DNA was isolated from the enriched culture and its inoculum (activated sludge), and used for PCR-DGGE analysis of 16S rRNA genes. Microbial compositions of the enrichment culture and the activated sludge were different, as determined by their different DGGE profiles. The difference in DGGE banding patterns suggests that environmental conditions of the enrichment culture caused a change in the microbial community composition of the inoculated activated sludge. Dominant DGGE bands in the enrichment culture sample were affiliated with the classes β-Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Spirochaetes. Further investigation is warranted to reveal the metabolic roles of the dominant populations in the ClO4− degradation process, along with their isolation.
In the East Sea of Korea the vertical structure functions of the temperature field were evaluated and the characteristic thermal zone was classified by the use of the empirical orthogonal function(EOF) method. The East Sea of Korea within the hydrographic lines of 10-107 of the Fisheries Research and Development Agency of Korea(FRDA) can be divided into three thermal regions by the characteristics of the vertical temperature variability. They are the North Korean Cold Current(NKCC) region near the coast which extends parallel to the north-south direction, the Warm-Core(WC) region which dominates almost all the hydrographic stations of the Line 104 of the FRDA and occupies a few stations of the Line-103 and -105 with its axis at the Line 104, and the East Korea Warm Current(EKWC) region which is bisected into the northern and the southern part by the WC region, respectively. Considering the two most important modes, $85.20-98.20\%$ of the total variance of temperature variation are explained in the NKCC region, $85.20-92.90\%$ in the EKWC region, and$85.50-91.70\%$ in the WC region. The first mode has its peak value at the surface with the annual cycle of variation. The spatial pattern of the first mode portrays a coherent vertical variation in the EKWC region and a clear anti-correlation both in the NKCC region and in the WC region where the zero-crossing depths are loom and 200m, respectively. The second mode of the NKCC region is particularly noticeable, haying its peak at loom with coherent vertical variation. To study the time dependency of the vertical structure functions, the extended EOF(EEOF) method was used. The persistence of the first mode is less than 4 months in the study area. The annual variation of the first mode in the NKCC region is different from those in the WC region and in the EKWC region.

The objective of this study was to compare the shear bond strengths of five dentin adhesive systems cured with three different light curing sources. Seventy five noncarious permanent teeth were collected and stored in an 0.1% thymol solution at room temperature after extraction. The tested adhesives were: Adper Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus Adhesive (SM) Adper Single bond 2 (SB), Clearfil SE Bond (SE), Adper Prompt L-Pop (PL), G-Bond (GB). And three light curing unit systems were used: Elipar Free light 2(LED), OptiLux 501 (Halogen), Flipo (PAC). For the shear bonding test, the labial and lingual surfaces of permanent teeth were used. To obtain a flat dentin surface, the labial and lingual surfaces of the teeth were sanded on SiO2 with number 600 grit and then divided into 15 groups of 10 surfaces each. All samples were theromocycled in water $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 1000 cycles. The results were as follows: 1. When cured with Freelight 2, the shear bond strength of SM was significantly higher than that of PL, GB (p<0.05), whereas no significant difference was found among those of any other bonding agents. 2. When cured with Optilux 501, the shear bond strength of SM was significantly higher than those of any other bonding agents (p<0.05), whereas no singnificant difference was found among those of andy other bonding agents. 3. When cured with Flipo, the shear bond strength of SM was significantly higher than those of SB, SE, GB (p<0.05), whereas no significant differences was found among those of any other bonding agents. 4. For comparison according to three different light cure unit system, except SB and GB, each three dentin bonding agents showed no significant difference. For SB, only Freelight 2 was significantly higher than the others, with no significant difference between Optilux 501 and Flip. For GB, Statistically significant difference was found only between Freelight and Flipo.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect on oxygen inhibition layer(OIL) for the interfacial bonding between resin composite layers, including shear bond strength, fracture modes and degree of conversion. The first layer of specimen was filled with Z-250(shade A3) and was cured for 40s. The second layer of specimen was filled with same composite(shade A1) and was cured for 40s. The first layer of specimens for each group were prepared by methods as followings. Control(curing in atmospheric air), Group1(curing against Mylar strip), Group2(scrubbed with a acetone-soaked cotton), Group3(using Tescera light cup), Group4(using Tescera heat cup), Group5(stored in disti1led water for 30days at $37^{\circ}C$), Group6 (using bonding agent). The results were as follows: 1. There was no statistically significant different shear bond strength between control and group 1(p>0.05). 2. Group 2 showed significantly lower shear bond strength than control and group 1(p<0.05). 3. The observation of the fracture surface leads to the evidence that a major difference occurs in the case of control, group1 and group 3 samples which break mainly cohesively while the other groups break in majority adhesively. 4. The results of FTIR showed that the degree of conversion was the highest in group 2 and the lowest in control group(p<0.05). It can be concluded that an OIL is not necessary for bonding with composite resin. But if a reduced critical amount of the unreacted monomer is present, it was detrimental to bonding additional layers of composite. Further study, such as the quantitative analysis of the unreacted monomer are required.

To assess the effect of environmental factors on the sustainability of cultured production shellfish, we investigated the habitat characteristics of tidal flat (Namhae-po in Taean). We measured the physiochemical parameters (temperature, salanity, pH, dissolved oxygen and nutrients) and the geochemical characteristics (chemical oxygen demand, ignition loss, C/N ratio and C/S ratio). Surface sediments were collected from several site of tidal flat to examine the geochemical characteristics of both the benthic environment and heavy metal pollution. The grain size for research area of tidal flat were similar at the ratio of silt and clay in comparison with the other site of it. The C/N ratio was more than 5.0, reflecting the range arising from the mix of marine organism and organic matter. The C/S ratio (about 2.8) showed that survey area had anoxic or sub-anoxic bottom conditions. The enrichment factor (Ef) and index of accumulation rate (Igeo) of the metals showed that those research areas can be classified as heavily polluted, heavily to moderately polluted, or more or less unpolluted, respectively. Adult surf clam (Mactra veneriformis) density was highest at St. 2 (middle part of the Namhae-po), on the other hand, surf clam spat density was highest at St. 3 (lower part of the Namhae-po). Heavy rain, terrigenous suspended clay with fresh water from neighboring agricultural land, and severe high air temperature during summer could be thought as detrimental causes of spat and adult mortality in Namhae-po tidal flat. We suggested that the growth of shellfish in the tidal flat was effected by the various environmental conditions, so an improvement in the cultured method was needed.
