  • Magnetite film on iron surface could be coated in strongly alkaline solution (12M NaH\OH) which contained additives such as NaHCO3, KCl and NaNO2, Iron plate was immersed in boiling solution ($130^{\circ}C$) contained above mentioned additives for 1 hour. There are some microcracks and these cracks proved to be the sites for the initiation of corrosion when immersed in 3% NaCl solution. To improve corrosion resistance of the coated steel plate, chromating was done as a post treatment. Chromate film was formed on magnetite oxide film potentiostatically at-918mV/SCE for five minutes at temperature of $70^{\circ}C$ in the alkaline solution containing 5g/l Na2Cr2O7.2H2O.Cr3O4 was electrodeposited on magnetite oxide film and Cr2O3 was electrodeposited on iron surface which was assumed as surface revealed due to microcracks. Increased corrosion resistance of chromated magnetite oxide film was proved in salt spray test & immersion test.

  • Currently, there are two main issues regarding the development of core technologies in the automotive industry: the development of environmentally friendly vehicles and securing a high level of safety in the event of an accident. As part of the efforts to address these issues, research into alternative materials and new car body manufacturing and assembly technologies is necessary, and this has been carried out mainly by the automotive industries. Large press molds for producing car body parts are made of cast iron. With the increase of automobile production and various changes of design, the press forming process of car body parts has become more difficult. In the case of large press molds, high hardness and abrasive resistance are needed. To overcome these problems, we attempted to develop a combined heat treatment process consisting of local laser heat treatment followed by plasma nitriding, and evaluated the characteristics of the proposed heat treatment method. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum surface hardness is 864 Hv by the laser heat treatment, 953 Hv by the plasma nitriding, and 1,094 Hv by the combined heat treatment. It is anticipated that the suggested combined heat treatment can be used to evaluate the durability of press mold.

  • Surface hardening treatment is required to improve the wear-resistance of press die because severe abrasion of die occurs during the drawing process in which the forming of the automotive body is completed and during the trimming process in which the unnecessary parts are cut. In this study, experiments on the laser surface treatment of press die are performed. Specimens are heat-treated separately at certain plate and edge position by using a diode laser to carry out suitable surface hardening treatment to reduce the wear during the drawing and the trimming processes, and the proper conditions for heat treatment are found. Spheroidal and flake graphite cast iron specimens are used, and the heat treatment characteristics of the two materials are compared. From the results of the study, it is confirmed that the heat treatment characteristics differed depending on the materials.

  • Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is one of the promising methods for hydrogen production by solar energy. Iron oxide has been effectively investigated as a photoelectrode material for PEC water splitting due to its intrinsic property such as short minority carrier diffusion length. However, iron oxide has a low PEC efficiency owing to a high recombination rate between photoexcited electrons and holes. In this study, we synthesized nanoporous structured iron oxide by anodization to overcome the drawbacks and to increase surface area. The anodized iron oxide was annealed in Ar atmosphere with different purging times. In conclusion, the highest current density of 0.032 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE was obtained with 60 s of pursing for iron oxide(Fe-60), which was 3 times higher in photocurrent density compared to iron oxide annealed with 600 s of pursing(Fe-600). The resistances and donor densities were also evaluated for all the anodized iron oxide by electrochemical impedance spectra and Mott-Schottky plot analysis.

  • The cast iron cylinder liner of the marine engine must be scrapped after its inner surface was definitely worn out due to the friction between the surface and piston ring during the operating. In this research, the restoring method of the worn out cast iron cylinder liner are discussed based on the results of experimental work of the thermal plastic deformation technique.

  • Long chain fatty acids (LCFA) are potential inhibitors of bacteria involved in anaerobic digestion because of their surface activity. Precipitation of long-chain fatty acids with iron can improve the anaerobic degradation due to their precipitation and reducing surface properties. Degradation of stearic acid was improved in the presence of iron (II). The methane production was increased 1.6 times as compared to control. Iron-containing soil was applied for degradation of vegetable oil as model case. The methane production was increased 1.5 times as compared to control. Yield of methane production was 0.09 and 0.06L/g COD in experiment and control respectively. Optimum COD/Fe ratio was found 20 mg/mg. Iron (II) can be produced in the treatment system from iron (III) hydroxide or iron containing minerals.

  • Laser surface hardening process is the method of hardening surface by inducing rapid self quenching of laser injected area through transfer of surface heat to inside after rapid heating of laser injected area only by high density energy heat source. This surface treatment method does not involve virtually any thermal deformation by heat treatment nor accompanies any other process after surface hardening treatment. In addition, allowing local machining, this method is a surface treatment method suitable for die with complicated shape. In this study, die material cast iron was surface-treated by using high power diode laser with beam profile suitable for heat treatment. Since the shapes of die differ by press die process, specimens were heat-treated separately on plane and corner depending on the applied parts. At this time, corner heat treatment was done with optic head inclined at $10^{\circ}$. As a result, corner heat treatment easily involves concentration of heat input due to limitation of heat transfer route by the shapes compared with plane part, so the treatment accomplished hardening at faster conveying speed than plane heat treatment.

  • Rotary bending fatigue tests were carried out to investigate the fatigue behavior of high performance ductile cast iron experienced super rapid induction heat treatment. The effect of super rapid induction treatment on fatigue limit was experimentally examined with the special focus on the variation surface microstructure and the fatigue crack initiation and propagation through fractography. Main results obtained are as follows. By super rapid induction treatment in FCD500, the martensite structure obtained through conventional quenching heat treatment was confirmed on the specimen surface. The fatigue crack initiation in the hardened surface layer was restricted by the martensite structure and compressive residual stress. Thus, it could be interpreted that the initiation stress would be increased by the improvement of surface structure. The fatigue crack propagation in the hardened layer was retarded by the presence of the globular shape martensite around the graphite nodule and compressive residual stress. The crack propagation path has shown zigzag pattern in the hardened surface layer.

  • Iron hydroxides are good adsorbents for uncomplexed metals, some metal-ligand complexes and many metal oxyanions. However, their adsorption properties of these precipitations are not fully exploited in wastewater treatment operations because of difficulties associated with their separation from the aqueous phase. This study describes experiments in which iron hydroxides were coated onto the surface of ordinary adsorbents(Sea sand) that are very resistant to acids, The coated adsorbents were used in adsorption of oxyanionic metals. The process was successful in removing some anions such as $SeO_3(-II)$ over a wide range of metal concentrations and sorption of oxyanionic metals increased with decreasing pH. Formation of two surface complexes for oxyanionic metals adsorption on iron hydroxides comprise (1) complexation of the free anion by a positively charged surface site, and (2) protonation of the adsorbed anion (or alternatively adsorption of a protonated form from solution) The coated adsorbents are inexpensive to prepare and could serve as the basis of a useful oxyanionic metal removal.
