A Study on the Effect of Roughness of Rolling Roll in the Paintabilility of Strip (압연롤의 조도가 박판의 도장성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Surface roughness of cold rolled steel sheet as well as the coating technique itself is quite important in obtaining high image clarity of electronic products and car outer panels. Especially, surface characteristics of steel sheet have acquired increasing attention from the steel and automotive industries. While the influence of such characteristics on paintability formability and painted surface appearance is important in defining steel surface requirements for automotive industries. Therefore this paper is dedicated primarily to the issue of paint appearance and reviews for improvement of roughness and peak count about the surface of work roll for the actual temper mill. The conclusions were obtained as follows ; 1) Roughness and peak count about the surface of steel sheet is strongly affected by surface condition of work roll. 2) The electro-discharge textured roll has more uniform roughness distribution than shot blasted roll and it's painted appearance of steel sheet has more improvement than that of the shot blasted because it has more harmonic wave roughness, and the higher peak count of surface roughness.

An Effect of Load on Surface Roughness on Surface Rolling of Ground Mild Steel (연삭가공된 강재의 표면 Rolling시 가압력이 표면 조도에 미치는 영향)

  • The surface rolling method which is one of the plastic deformation processes increases the surface roughness with reduction of diameter and hardness. In this study, three NACHI 6000 ZZ bearing were used for surface rolling tool on a mild steel. The following results have been obtained with the mild steel. 1) The load is major factor in getting fine surface roughness of roller fininshing after grinding. The optimal surface roughness of SS40 steel can be obtained at the contact pressure of $210kgf/cm^2$. But, Better surface roughness can not be expected, Due to flaking phenomena at more than 300 kgf/cm of contact pressure. 2) At the contact pressure range of $200kgf/cm^2{\sim}210kgf/cm^2$ for optimal surface roughness, The surface hardness increased to Hv 200~Hv 240 from Hv 125 before surface rolling. 3) Within the diameter variation of $13{\mu}m$ the surface roughness and the surface hardness were increased, but out of variation of $14{\mu}m$. The surface roughness become worse and the surface hardness was increased.

  • In this paper, an average surface roughness, $R_a$, was measured by optical measurement and its mathematical model according to spindle speed and feedrate was obtained by least square method. Also, its result is compared and investigated with real measured average surface roughness. The optical measurement of surface roughness is performed by CLSM(confocal laser scanning microscope) and the captured HEI(height encoded image) data is used as an original data for the generation of average surface roughness and its mathematical plane or contour surface of surface roughness. Using this polynomial model with two independent variables, the behavior of an average surface roughness is investigated and analyzed with an experimental modeling of least square algorithm. And it can be used for the prediction of $R_a$ in different condition of machining.

The Probabilistic Forcasting of Product's Surface Quality (제품 표면품질의 확률적 예측)

  • As a general index in surface quality of machined products, surface roughness is to measure worker's skill level, a ground product quality and machining accuracy, etc. The surface roughness is defined by a function of rotational speed and radius of a grinding wheel, distances of active grains composed of the wheel, and feed of a grinder's worktable. To predict surface roughness in horizontal surface grinding operations, probability distributions were used. Probability distribution functions(p.d.f.) of surface roughness were found as results when the size of active grains(=the radius of a grinding wheel) is given as uniform, exponential distribution, and the distance between active grains follows the distributions of uniform, exponential. For each pdf case, probabilistic features of surface roughness were also analyzed and presented. This study is a substantial step for determining mathematically the surface roughness instead of using empirical approaches. More works should be presented to develop a general model by which an accurate roughness value can be obtained in horizontal surface grinding operations.

  • The objective of this paper is the investigation of the relationships between the surface roughness and film evaporative characteristics of the surface. For example, when the droplet of liquid is in contact with the solid surface, its behavior strongly depends on the surface characteristics. The material properties and geometry - profile shape, waviness, roughness - of the surfaces have strongly influenced on the wettability of the droplet. To investigate the effect of the surface roughness on the film evaporation, firstly, the characteristics of wettabilities were studied according to contact angle and surface tree energy of specimens with various roughness heights. Secondly, the experimental test were carried out on capacities of the tubes diversly roughened by using different kinds of emery papers. Finally, the relationships between the film evaporation characteristics and surface roughness were explained by means of the correlation of contact angle and surface free energy with surface roughness and the influences of surface tree energy on the heat transfer performance.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show the result from the study to improve the formability and appearance which is important in the cold rolled strip, the coated strip and prepainted strip. Furthermore, to give appropriate surface roughness, shape of work roll for temper mill is also important. The strip has a greater peak counts and homogeneous roughness. This makes the prepainted surface smooth and consistent in appearance with good image clarity. Therefore, the surface roughness of the work roll is very important. The reason that surface roughness of the work roll is transferred to the strip surface is the rolling farce and tension at the temper rolling or cold rolling. This study is classified in order to get an accurate and homogeneous roughness. There are few papers published in this field, because its importance is not known and the proper operation of the machine is not generally well known. This paper investigates the correlation between strip surface roughness and the surface of the work roll. After studying the surface roughness and shape according to the texturing method for roll surfaces at temper rolling, the findings were as follows. Irregular surface roughness can be compensated with several paint coatings, but this also makes the quality deteriorate and manufacturing costs go up.

Evaluation of surface roughness of heat-polymerized denture base resin according to the polishing step (연마 과정에 따른 열중합 의치상 레진의 표면 거칠기 평가)

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare the surface roughness according to polishing process in conventional laboratory techniques used for polishing three different acrylic denture base resins. Materials and methods: Specimen preparation and surface polishing procedures were conducted to manufacturer's recommendation with three heat-polymerized denture base resins. Surface roughness and gloss were measured by a contact type tester and a LED gloss checker using thickness 2 mm and diameter 10 mm. There were five specimens for each acrylic resin material and polishing procedures. Mean average surface roughness (Ra) values of each specimen group were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA analysis of variance and Scheffe's post hoc test. Surfaces after surface roughness and gloss testing according to each polishing process were evaluated under a stereoscopic microscope. Results: The highest mean average surface roughness was measured($Ra=2.43{\pm}0.47$) for surfaces finished with a denture tungsten carbide bur in Triplex. The lowest surface roughness values ($Ra=0.11{\pm}0.07$) were determined in Vertex polished with a lathe. In addition, all materials revealed that surface roughness determined highly in HP1 and HP2 than other procedures. All correlation between surface roughness and gloss showed highly with three heat-polymerized resins. Specially, topmost correlation revealed than other material in Triplex. Significant differences in mean average surface roughness were found between polishing process used high speed lathe and low speed hand-piece. Conclusion: Laboratory polishing used to high speed was found to produce the smoothest surface of heat-polymerized denture base acrylic resin. Therefore, we recommended that high polishing process need to get smooth surface.

  • This paper is to analyze the surface roughness in wet and dry surface grinding in which working conditions are table feed, cross feed and down feed. FFT analyzer is used to identify the surface roughness and the data of surface roughness are stored and displayed using an interfaced computer. In results, components affecting surface roughness exist within 200Hz with respect the conditions and methods of grinding operation. Also, with increase of table feed, cross feed and down feed, the value of surface roughness increases. Of them, cross feed has first influence on surface roughness. In dry, preciser surface can be obtained than one in wet.

  • The quality and functionality of machined products is determined by surface finish. The surface roughness is characterized by roughness parameters such as R $_{a}$ and R $_{max}$. While such parameters are useful to define the quality of surface, they are nor sufficiently descriptive characteristics of surface. The fractal dimension which can describe characteristics od surface roughness than conventional roughness parameters has been applied.   • Surface of rapid prototype has inevitably stair-stepping error, which is attributed to the continuous building process of 2 dimensional area. In this study, rounded edge model was established to estimate the roughness of inclined surface which has stair-stepping error. To investigate the roughness of rapid prototypes, specimens that have various surface inclinations were manufactured by various types of RP machines. As the surface inclination increased, the roughness of the specimens manufactured by SL, FDM, or LOM process decreased, which coincides with the simulation results. However, surface roughness of 3DP specimen was almost independent of the inclination. Furthermore, as the angle of surface increased, roughness of poly-jet specimen also increased, which is attributed to the frictional behavior between writing head and scanned area.
