The porosities of PET fibers were investigated using a nitrogen porosimeter according to oxygen plasma treatment and dyeing with a disperse dye, and they were discussed in terms of the change of internal micro-structure of the PET fiber. The total pore volume, surface area and average pore size of the plasma treated PET fibers increased expectably compared with the untreated sample. The PET fibers treated with oxygen plasma and then dyed with a disperse dye were increased significantly in the surface area and the total pore volume comparing with those of plasma treated only, but decreased in the average pore size. The increase of the surface area, after dyeing, of the plasma treated PET fibers was due to addition of the surface area of the dye itself to that of the PET fiber. The increase of the total pore volume of the plasma treated PET fibers by dyeing, which is the opposite result to the general idea that the pore volume of fibers would be reduced by occupation of dye molecules in the pores, could be explained by the free-volume model. This is that the amorphous region in the fiber expanded by occupation of dye molecules, and the marginal space surrounding dyes was generated as many smaller pores, and the decrease of the average pore size of the dyed sample also could be explained The decrease of the average pore size was caused by the splitting of a larger pore into smaller pores.
This is the research about a new method to make the internal separation layer with smallest pore size in polyethersulfone (PES) membrane by adding p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA) and polyvinylpyrolidone (PVP) to polymeric PES solution. The preparation and morphological characterization of PES sheet membranes containing PVP as a hydrophilic swelling material and TSA as a demixing material were performed. As a result by microflow porometery, the PVP and TSA added PES membranes showed good permeabilities and narrow pore size distributions, comparable to those of the commercial membranes. The concentration of PVP affected the PES characteristics on air permeability and surface structure. The concentration of TSA influenced on pore size distribution but do not affect air permeability. The surface images of FE-SEM shows similar pore size when TSA added or not. However, the cross-section images of FE-SEM show that the TSA added PES membranes have a increase of internal layer thickness with smallest pore size.
Silica hydrogel was synthesized by the reaction of liquid sodium silicate with sulfuric acid. The condensation polymerization of the synthesized hydrogel was carried out via an aging process under the acidic or alkaline conditions. Nano porous silica with the pore size below 3 nm and surface area of $715m^2/g$, was obtained by the above processes in acidic ranges(pH : 3~5). The pore size and surface area of the silica varied with pH, and in alkaline ranges(pH : 8~10), those were 21 nm and $300m^2/g$ respectively. The characteristics of the silica varied with the thermal treatment which caused the change of surface area, pore volume and pore diameter.

The electrochemical properties of electric double layer capacitor(EDLC) was studied by controlling pore size distribution and specific surface area of the activated carbon fiber(ACF). The mesoporous ACF, which was prepared by the iron exchange method, showed the tendency of increasing average pore size and decreasing total surface area. The mesoporous ACF (surface area = 2225 $m^2$/g, pore size=1.93 nm) showed increased mesopore(pore size=1~3nm) volume from 0.055 cc/g to 0.408 cc/g compared to its raw ACF. The charging capacity of the EDLC which uses the prepared mesoporous ACF also increased from 0.39 F/$cm^2$ to 0.55 F/$cm^2$. From these results, it can be known that the electrochemical properties of EDLC are mainly dependent on the specific surface area, but above the surface area 2200 $m^2$/g, it is the mesopore volume that affects the performance of the capacitor considerably. Because the increased mesopore volume results in a decreased ion mobility resistance, the charge capacitance is enhanced.
A Monte Carlo simulation based on Potts model in a three dimensional lattice was studied to analyze and design microstructures in porous sintered compacts such as porosity, pore size, grain (particle) size and contiguity of grains. The effect of surface energy of particles and the content of additional fine particles to coarse particles on microstructure development were examined to obtain fundamentals for material design in porous materials. It has been found that the larger surface energy enhances sintering (necking) of particles and increases contiguity and surface energy does not change pore size and grain size. The addition of fine particles also enhances sintering of particles and increases contiguity, but it has an effect on increment of pore size and grain size. Such a simulation technique can give us important information or wisdom for design of porous materials, e.g., material system with high surface energy and fine particle audition are available for higher strength and larger porosity in porous sintered compacts with applications in an automobile.
Amorphous alumina powder prepared by the fast calcination of aluminum trihydroxide(Al(OH)3 gibbsite) for 0.5 second at 580$^{\circ}C$ was investigated rehydration propeties. Phase composition crystal size and mor-phology surface area pore volume and pore size distribution of pesudo-boehmite and bayerite crystals changed with temperature time water/alumina ratio and particle size when amorphous alumina rehydrated with water. Phase compositions were examined with XRD and DTA and crystal sized morphologies were investigaed with SEM and TEM. Also rehydration properties of amorphous alumina were in-vestigated by measuring the surface area pore volume and pore size distribution.
In this study, monodispersive silica nanoparticles with double mesoporous shells were synthesized, and the pore size of synthetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles was controlled. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), N, N-dimethylbenzene, and decane were used as soft template and induced to form outer mesoporous shell. The resultant double mesoporous silica nanoparticles were consisted of two layers of shells having different pore sizes, and it has been confirmed that outer shells with larger pores (Mean pore size > 2.5 nm) are formed directly on the surface of the smaller pore sized shell (Mean pore size < 2.5 nm). It was confirmed that the regulation of the molar ratio of pore expansion agents plays a key role in determining the pore size of double mesoporous shells.
Microporous glasses in the system TiO2-SiO2-Al2O3-B2O3-CaO-Na2O were prepared by the phase-separation technique. Morphology and distribution of pore and specific surface area of glasses heated and leached out at various conditions were investigated by SEM and Porosimeter. Crystallization of glasses heated above transition temperature was also inspected by X-ray diffraction method. When the heating temperature and time increased, the pore size and volume increased, but the specific surface area decreased above the critical temperature. The phase-separation, specific surface area and pore size showed more sensitive change on the variation of heating temperature than of heating time. The specific surface area and micropore volume of porous glasses prepared in this study were about 120-330$m^2$/g and 0.001-0.01cc/g, respectively. Mean pore size of porous glasses were about 20-90$\AA$. Anatase phases was deposited when the parent glass was heat-treated at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 6hrs.
Relationships between surface structure and adsorption properties of smoke components were investigated in surface-modified and un-modified activated carbon filter cigarettes. Commercially available activated carbon was treated with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant, and their pore volume, surface structure, BET surface area, pore type and size were studied. BET surface area and pore volume were decreased by nitric acid treatment, but median pore diameter was 8.1 $\AA$, which showed better development of pore compared with that of un-modified activated carbon, 6.9 $\AA$. In case of hydrogen peroxide treatment, BET surface area and pore volume were increased. Their pore was found to be a slit type based on V-t plot analysis. Neutralization capacities for bases of different strength (NaHCO3, Na2CO3, NaOEt and NaOH) showed that the majority of the acidic surface groups are of weak acidity. Modification of the activated carbon surface led to a slight change in adsorption properties when analyzing the smoke of triple-filter cigarette with surface-modified activated carbon.
The porosity of polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution was investigated using a nitrogen porosimeter, and the dyeability of the treated fibers was discussed in terms of the porosity. In pore distribution, the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution were characterized by higher amount of pores below $10\AA$ than those of the untreated fibers, and by shift of the pore size having maximum accumulated volume from $10\AA$ for the untreated fibers to $5~6\AA$. As the weight loss of the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution increased, BET surface area and total pore volume increased linearly, but average pore size, showing some different aspect, increased steeply at earlier stage and then approached the maximum value. The dye uptakes of the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution increased with the BET surface area, the total pore volume and the average pore size. The alkali treatment increased the surface area of polyester fibers, so that the chance of contact between the fiber and dye molecules increased. In addition, the pores created on the surface of polyester fibers by alkali treatment might act as pathways for dye molecules into the polyester fibers.
