PURPOSES : This study determined the optimal usage rate of RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement) using cold central-plant recycling (CCPR) on a road-surface layer. In addition, a mixture-aggregate gradation design and a curing method based on the proposed rate for the surface-layer mix design were proposed. METHODS : First, current research trends were investigated by analyzing the optimum moisture content, mix design, and quality standards for surface layers in Korea and abroad. To analyze the aggregate characteristics of the RAP, its aggregate-size characteristics were analyzed through the combustion asphalt content test and the aggregate sieve analysis test. Moreover, aggregate-segregation experiments were performed to examine the possibility of RAP aggregate segregation from field compaction and vehicle traffic. After confirming the RAP quality standards, coarse aggregate and fine aggregate, aggregate-gradation design and quality tests were conducted for mixtures with 40% and 50% RAP usage. The optimum moisture content of the surface-layer mixture containing RAP was tested, as was the evapotranspiration effect on the surface-layer mixture of the optimum moisture content. RESULTS : After analyzing the RAP recycled aggregate size and extraction aggregate size, 13-8mm aggregate was found to be mostly 8mm aggregate after combustion. After using surface-chipping and mixing methods to examine the possibility of RAP aggregate segregation, it was found that the mixing method contributed very little for 3.32%, and because the surface-chipping method applied compaction energy directly as the maximum assumption the separation ratio was 15.46%. However, the composite aggregate gradation did not change. Using a 40% RAP aggregate rate on the surface-layer mixture for cold central-plant recycling satisfied the Abroad quality standard. The optimum moisture content of the surface-layer mixture was found to be 7.9% using the modified Marshall compaction test. It was found that the mixture was over 90% cured after curing at $60^{\circ}C$ for two days. CONCLUSIONS : To use the cold central-plant recycling mixture on a road-surface layer, a mixture-aggregate gradation design was proposed as the RAP recycled aggregate size without considering aggregate segregation, and the RAP optimal usage rate was 40%. In addition, the modified Marshall compaction test was used to determine the optimum moisture content as a mix-design parameter, and the curing method was adapted using the method recommended by Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association (ARRA).
Annual variation of water qualities in the Shihwa Lake were observed 18 times from June 1996 to October 2001. We studied at the station of the upper streams and near the water gate of lake. After the flow of the outer seawater through the water gate, the surface salinity in Shihwa Lake increased to the range of 25-30 psu in both stations after October 1998. Due to the declination of the salinity differences between the surface and the bottom water, the pycnocline in which had existed until 1997 has weakened, and made the water column mix vertically. This led to the improvement of anoxic/hypoxic environment at bottom waters after April 1998. However, despite the continuous flow of the outer seawater, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a at surface layer were varied from $2{\mu}g/l\;to\;60{\mu}g/l$, and these values indicated the eutrophication. The following organic matter load was greatly influencing the surface layer's COD concentration. During the rainy season, the salinity at the surface layer to the below 15 psu resulting in stratification between the surface and bottom layer. Organic matters that were provided from the surface layer to the bottom layer due to active primary production in the year exhausted dissolved oxygen at the bottom layer, and the bulks of organic matters at bottom gave rise to hypoxic or anoxic environment. It was observed that the enrichment of ammonia and phosphate were main factors to worsen the water quality of the Shihwa Lake. The results of examining the annual variations in Shiwha Lake through principal component analysis shown that water characteristics in the rainy season were similar with those before input of outer sea water.
Sensitivity experiments of WRF model using different planetary boundary layer (PBL) and land surface model (LSM) parameterizations are evaluated for prediction of wind fields within the surface layer. The experiments were performed with three PBL schemes (YSU, Pleim, MYJ) in combination with three land surface models (Noah, RUC, Pleim). The WRF model was conducted on a nested grid from 27-km to 1-km horizontal resolution. The simulations validated wind speed and direction at 10 m and 80 m above ground level at a 1-km spatial resolution over the South Korea. Statistical verification results indicate that Pleim and YSU PBL schemes are in good agreement with observations at 10 m above ground level, while the MYJ scheme produced predictions similar to the observed wind speed at 80 m above ground level. LSM comparisons indicate that the RUC model performs best in predicting 10-m and 80-m wind speed. It is found that MYJ (PBL) - RUC (LSM) simulations yielded the best results for wind field in the surface layer. The choice of PBL and LSM parameterization will contribute to more accurate wind predictions for air quality studies and wind power using WRF.
The quality of the surface layer in concrete structures plays an important role in the durability of the concrete. The concrete factory products are made as they improve the appearance of the surface and compressive strength in need. A common criterion to judge the quality of concrete products frequently seen in our daily life appears to be "beauty" in terms of consistent shaping. However, as for most concrete curb in such areas where a large amount of anti-freezing agents(NaCl) and ice and snow melting agents(CaCl2) are spread over roads to ensure road safety during the winter season, since deterioration advances from the surface, scaling is seen on the surface concrete due to deterioration which combined freezing damage and salt damage. Especially, In cold northern districts, the spreading amount of deicing salts increases by regulation of studded tire use, and the scaling of the concrete products, the various parts of concrete structures for roads is increasing in recent years. In this study, L-shape concrete curb were targeted, the permeable form method with the commercial permeable sheet was applied to it and the improvements of the quality were examined. By the permeable form method, surface layers got strengthened, which prevented permeation of the deterioration factor from the outside, and the scaling resistance of the upper surface where the permeable sheet was applied improved exceedingly. It will be expected by applying the permeable form method to various concrete products that frost resistance improves and scaling damage decreases.
GaN thin films on sapphire were grown by rf magnetron sputtering with ZnO buffer layer. The dependence of GaN film quality on ZnO buffer layer was investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD). The improved film quality has been obtained by using thin ZnO buffer layer. Using Auger electron spectroscopy(AES), it was observed that the annealing process improved the GaN film quality. The surface roughness according to the annealing temperatures(700, 900, 1100$^{\circ}C$) were investigated by AFM(atomic force microscopy) and it was confirmed that the crystallization was improved by increasing the annealing temperature. Photoluminescence at 8K shows a near-band-edge peak at 3.2eV with no deep level emission.
Direct & adaptive slicing of sculptured surfaces in RP improves, quality & accuracy of the final product, compared to the slicing with uniform layer thickness or the slicing of facets (ie, STL). Present D&A slicing procedures adaptively compute the next layer thickness based on the surface information of current sliced contour, which assumes constant normal curvature values. In some cases, however. such assumption leads to intolerable slicing result which cannot correctly consider the entire local feature shape. We propose improved adaptive slicing algorithms which can determine near-optimal layer thickness, including illustrated examples.
A simulation study of the distribution of magnetic flux induced by a U-shaped electromagnet into a two-layer massive object with variations in the depth and properties of the surface layer has been carried out. It has been established that the hardened surface layer "pushes" the magnetic flux into the bulk of the magnetized object and the magnetic flux penetration depth monotonically increases with increasing thickness of the hardened layer. A change in the thickness and magnetic properties of the surface layer leads to a redistribution of magnetic fluxes passing between the poles of the electromagnet along with the layer and the bulk of the steel object. In this case, the change in the layer thickness significantly affects the magnitude of the tangential component of the field on the surface of the object in the interpolar space, and the change in the properties of the layer affects the magnitude of the magnetic flux in the magnetic "transducer-object" circuit. This difference in magnetic parameters can be used for selective testing of the surface hardening quality. It has been shown that the hardened layer pushes the magnetic flux into the depth of the magnetized object. The nominal depth of penetration of the flow monotonically increases with an increase in the thickness of the hardened layer.
In order to clarify the impact of anti-heat insulation pavement on the thermal structure of atmospheric boundary layer, field experiments and numerical simulations were carried out. Field experiment with various pavements were also conducted for 24 hours from 09LST 19 June 2007. And numerical experiment mainly focused on the impact of albedo variation, which is strongly associated with thermal characteristics of insulated pavement materials, on the temporal variation of planterly boundary layer. Numerical model used in this study is one dimension model with Planterly Boundary Layer developed by Oregon State University (OSUPBL). Because anti-heat insulation pavement material shows higher albedo value, not only maximum surface temperature but also maximum surface air temperature on anti-heat insulation pavement is lower than that on asphalt. The maximum value of surface temperature only reach on $49.5^{\circ}C$. As results of numerical simulations, surface sensible heat flux and the height of mixing layer are also influenced by the values of albedo. Therefore the characteristics of urban surface material and its impact on atmosphere should be clarified before the urban planning including improvement of urban heat environment and air quality.
For low-emissivity application on window glass, coalescence of thin film silver islands is crucial for high transmittance in the visible and high reflectance in the infrared. It is well known that the underlayer affects the growth mode. In this work, the effect of the underlayer on the growth of silver films deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc is discussed. While a nominal 0.1 nm niobium underlayer has promoted the coalescence of silver islands, a 0.2 nm layer did not show these features. From a thermodynamic approach, Nb seeding less one monolayer is considered to reduce the surface energy between the silver atoms and $Nb/TiO_2$ surface, resulting the change of its growth from 3D islands to 2D-layer modes. If the seed layer exceeds one monolayer, however, a rougher surface is formed because the surface energy of Nb itself is superior to that of $Nb-TiO_2$. The onset of silver layer on the roughened Nb surface is required more silver.
