  • This paper deals with the theoretical estimation and its experimental verification of grinding wheel wear in surface grinding process. A theoretical formulation is provided to predict the grinding wheel wear in surface grinding. To validate the theoretical prediction, the grinding wheel wear is measured by using a laser scanning micrometer. The associated surface roughness and grinding farce are also investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Through a series of simulations and experiments, it is shown that the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper aims to clarify the effects of grinding conditions on the ground surface and bending strength in surface grinding of various ferrites with diamond wheel. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. The surface roughness becomes better at lower wheel speed in the case of v/V=1$\times$10-3, and the condition of v/V=1$\times$10-4shows the best performance for the finish grinding. When the relative contact temperature becomes lower at a constant value of v/V, the ground surface exhibits lower roughness. The ground surface shows that the fracture process during grinding becomes more brittle at the higher value of v/V. The damage depth which affect the bending strength is below 10$\mu$m in the grinding condition of S=10㎣/mm.s with the diamond tool after dressing & truing, however, the depth increases with increasing removal rate(S). When the strength degradation due to grinding is larger, the removal depth for the recovery of strength requires a larger size.

  • This paper deals with the monitoring of grinding wheel wear in surface grinding process. A monitoring system, which makes use of a laser scanning micrometer, is developed to measure the circumferential shape as well as the axial profile of grinding wheel. The monitoring system is applied to surface grinding processes. The experimental results show that the developed monitoring system is useful not only for monitoring the amount of wear in grinding wheel but also for evaluation the quality of ground surface and determining proper derssing time for the grinding wheel.

  • In this paper, the grinding characteristics in thrust internal grinding have been studied using vitreous CBN wheels with a machining center. Grinding experiments have been performed according to grinding conditions such as wheel feed speed, cut depth, workpiece speed, rate of grinding width and number of grinding passes. The machining error, shape of machined surfaces, grinding force, and surface roughness have been investigated though these experiments. Based on the experimental results, the grinding characteristics on the machined surface in the internal thrust grinding are discussed.

  • Mirror surface finish of Si-wafers has been achieved by rotary in-feed machining with cup-type wheels in ELID grinding. But the diameter of the workpiece is limited with the diameter of grinding wheel in the in-feed machining method. In this study, grinding experiments by the rotary surface grinding machine with straight type wheels ware conducted, by which the possible grinding area of the workpiece is independent of the diameter of the wheels. For the purpose of investigating the grinding characteristics of large scale diametrical silicon wafer, grinding conditions such as rotation speed of grinding wheels and revolution of workpieces are varied, and grinding machine used in this experiment is rotary type surface grinding n/c equipment with an ELID wit. The surface ground using the SD8000 wheels showed that mirror like surface roughness can be attained near 2 - 6 nm in Ra.

  • The Surface roughness is affected by the factors such as elements of grinding wheel, grinding conditions, and so on. Of all these factors, we studied surface roughness variation in accordance with grain size of grinding wheel and grinding depth of cut on the surface grinding. Tempered, annealed, quenched, and non-heat treated materials were used as specimen. The results obrained in these experiments are as follows: 1) The smaller the hardness is, the better the grinding surface roughness becomes. 2) Tempered materials after quenching shows the finest finished surface on grinding.

  • The surface roughness is one of important parameters to obtain the high quality of products in grinding process. In precision components, it's level must be limited to a certain range. This study evaluated experimentally grinding characteristics of workpieces in the surface grinding process. The grinding forces were obtained to compare with the grindability of workpieces such as STD11, STS304 and STB2. The surface roughnesses on various workpieces were measured according to increasing the feed and the depth of cut. In addition, the wear amount of wheels according to the number of grinding were obtained. Also the grinding wheel and the ground surface were observed with a microscopic instrument.

  • To reduce two preprocess operations to one in the surface grinding operation the laminated grinding wheel was introduced and its availability has already been investigated in the cylindrical grinding process. Thus in this study the experiment was carried out to attempt to prove that the laminated grinding wheel can be used in the surface grinding process with respect to the roughness and grinding force.

  • Grinding burn formed on the ground surface is related to the maximum temperature of workpiece surface and wheel temperature in the grinding process. The thermal characteristics of workpiece and grinding conditions on the surface temperature of the oxidation growing layer after get out of contact with the grinding wheel. The assumption used in grinding power signatures leads to the local temperature distribution between grinding wheel and workpiece, i.e., a single curve determines temperatures anywhere within the grinding wheel at anytime. This information is useful in the study of the grinding bum penetration into the wheel and thus provides an presentation of grinding trouble monitoring for the burning. On the basis of grinding power signatures in the wheel, thermally optimum conditions are defined and controlled. To cope with grinding burn, the use of grinding power signatures is an effective monitoring systems when occurring the grinding process. In this paper, the identified parameters suggested in this study which are derived from the grinding power signatures are presented.

  • The mirror surface grinding of carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) was realized by using the metal bonded super-abrasive micro grain wheel with electrolytic in-process dressing(ELID). The maximum surface roughness $R_{max}$ of CFRP which was obtained with #6,000 wheel, was 0.65 $\mu{m}$, which was rougher surface finish compared to those of hard and brittle materials with the same mesh number wheel with ELID. The grinding performance was much dependent on the grinding direction and the best surface roughness was obtained at $90^{\circ}C$ grinding with fiber direction. The spark-out effect on the surface improvement was significant when smaller mesh number grinding wheels were used. From the surface observations of CFRP with scanning electron microscope(SEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy(AES), it was found that the mirror surface grinding of CFRP was generated by the homogenization due to carbonization of the ground surface and smearing of chips composed of the carbon fiber and carbonized epoxy resin into the ground surface.
