중수로형 핵연료 피복관의 자동초음파탐상장치 개발 (Development of the Automated Ultrasonic Flaw Detection System for HWR Nuclear Fuel Cladding Tubes)

  • 중수로형 핵연료의 피복재로 사용되는 Zircaloy-4관의 결함검사를 위한 자동초음파 탐상 장치가 개발되었다. 이 장치에는 중심진동수가 14 MHz이고 대역폭이 11MHz인 집속 초음파 펄스를 사용한 수침 펄스-에코우 탐상기술과 특별히 고안된 시험수조 이송식 초음파주사 기술이 적용되었다 같은 크기와 방향을 갖는 관내외면 결함들을 같은 높이의 초음파 신호로 검출하기 위한 초음파 빔의 최적입사각은 26도이었다. Zircaloy-4피복관의 최대 허용 결함인, 깊이가 관두께의 10%인 0.04 mm이고, 길이가 0.76 mm인 축방향 및 길이가 0.38 mm인 원주방향 V형 인공결함들이 관내외면에 개재된 표준시험관을 사용하여 이 장치의 성능시험을 수행하였다. 그 결과 인공 표준시험관내의 모든 결함들을 매우 우수한 재현성을 갖고 분당 약 1m의 속도로 검출할 수 있었으며 이때의 신호 대 잡음 비는 축방향 결함에 대해서는 20 dB, 원주방향 결함에 대해서는 12 dB 이상이었다.

컴퓨터 비전 기반 UAV 영상의 도로표면 결함탐지 방안 (Detection Method for Road Pavement Defect of UAV Imagery Based on Computer Vision)

  • 아스팔트 도로표면의 균열은 자동차 속도, 연료 소비량, 도로주행 시 승차감, 도로표면의 내구성 등에 영향을 미친다. 이러한 도로의 균열은 장시간 방치 시 상당히 위험한 결과를 초래할 수 있다. 사람이 직접 균열을 찾아 내어 적절한 조치를 취하기에는 너무 많은 시간과 비용이 소모된다. 또한 고가의 레이저 장비 차량들을 활용하기에는 초기 비용과 장비 운용에 어려움을 가진다. 이에 본 연구에서는 UAV 영상을 이용해 컴퓨터 비전 기반의 관심영역(ROI: Region of Interest) 설정과 에지 검출 알고리즘을 적용하여 도로표면의 균열탐지 방안을 제시하였다. 본 연구 결과는 무인항공기를 활용한 효율적인 도로표면 결함탐지 및 유지보수 방안으로 제시될 수 있다. 또한 도로 이외 건물빌딩의 외벽, 대규모 저장 탱크 등 다양한 건축, 토목 구조물에 발생된 균열 탐지에 활용이 가능하며 비용저감 효과를 기대할 수 있을 것이다.

Real time crack detection using mountable comparative vacuum monitoring sensors

  • Current maintenance operations and integrity checks on a wide array of structures require personnel entry into normally-inaccessible or hazardous areas to perform necessary nondestructive inspections. To gain access for these inspections, structure must be disassembled and removed or personnel must be transported to remote locations. The use of in-situ sensors, coupled with remote interrogation, can be employed to overcome a myriad of inspection impediments stemming from accessibility limitations, complex geometries, the location and depth of hidden damage, and the isolated location of the structure. Furthermore, prevention of unexpected flaw growth and structural failure could be improved if on-board health monitoring systems were used to more regularly assess structural integrity. A research program has been completed to develop and validate Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM) Sensors for surface crack detection. Statistical methods using one-sided tolerance intervals were employed to derive Probability of Detection (POD) levels for a wide array of application scenarios. Multi-year field tests were also conducted to study the deployment and long-term operation of CVM sensors on aircraft. This paper presents the quantitative crack detection capabilities of the CVM sensor, its performance in actual flight environments, and the prospects for structural health monitoring applications on aircraft and other civil structures.

초음파에 의한 필렛 용접힐부의 표면결함 검출능에 관한 실험적 검증 (Experimental Verification on the Detectability of Surface Flaws at Fillet Weld Hills by Ultrasonic Method)

  • Ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (UNDE) technique is commonly used for detecting inner defects in the materials. Recently, new methods are trying to apply for detecting surface and subsurface flaws using Rayleigh wave or creeping wave. These techniques, however, have following problems. Echo amplitude is remarkably affected by the surface conditions and discrimination of echo pattern is usually difficult because shear wave propagate in the material at the same time. We can apply surface SH-wave(which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface layer) technique to detect surface flaws. In this paper, directivity, distance amplitude characteristics and detectability of surface flaws at fillet weld hills of the 5 MHz and 2 MHz surface flaws at fillet weld hills of the 5 MHz and 2 MHz surface Sh-wave are experimentally investigated. As a result of the study, it was found out that these techniques are valuable for the detection of fatigue cracks at fillet weld heels which can not be detected by other ultrasonic techniques such as angle beam technique and which are inaccessible for non-destructive testings e.g. MT(magnetic particle testing) or PT(liquid penetrant testing).

  • The lock-in thermography was employed to evaluate the defects in railway bogies. Prior to the actual application on railway bogies, in order to assess the detectability of known flaws, the calibration reference panel was prepared with various dimensions of artificial flaws. The panel was composed of polymer matrix composites, which were the same material with actual bogies. Through lock-in thermography evaluation, the optimal frequency of heat source was determined for the best flaw detection. Based on the defects information, the actual defect assessments on railway bogie were conducted with different types of railway bogies, which were used for the current operation. In summary, it was found that the novel infrared thermography technique could be an effective way for the inspection and the detection of surface defects on bogies since the infrared thermography method provided rapid and non-contact investigation of railway bogies.

  • 터빈 로타 디스크는 디스크, keyway, bore surface, hub, rim 등으로 구성되고 이들 부분이 전형적인 균열 발생 부위이다. 이러한 부위는 기하학적 형상이 복잡해 적절한 탐촉자의 선정, wedge 설계 및 가공, 검사체의 형상과 크기에 따른 정상신호와 결함신호의 분류 및 평가가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 디스크 keyway 및 bore surface에 인공결함을 갖는 디스크 대비 시험편을 제작하여 구조, 형상별 초음파 신호를 수집하여 분석하였고 디스크 곡률에 따른 wedge를 설계, 제작하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 형상별 신호를 정의할 수 있었고 디스크부에 발생되는 결함을 검출하고 평가할 수 있는 초음파검사 기술을 확립하였다. 또한 현장 적용에 있어서 성공적인 결과를 입증하였다.

Monitoring degradation in concrete filled steel tubular sections using guided waves

  • Concrete filled steel tubes are extensively applied in engineering structures due to their resistance to high tensile and compressive load and convenience in construction. But one major flaw, their vulnerability to environmental attack, can severely reduce the strength and life of these structures. Degradation due to corrosion of steel confining the concrete is one of the major durability problems faced by civil engineers to maintain these structures. The problem accelerates as inner surface of steel tube is in contact with concrete which serves as electrolyte. If it remains unnoticed, it further accelerates and can be catastrophic. This paper discusses a non-destructive degradation monitoring technique for early detection corrosion in steel tubes in CFST members. Due to corrosion, damage in the form of debonding and pitting occurs in steel sections. Guided ultrasonic waves have been used as a feasible and attractive solution for the detection and monitoring of corrosion damages in CFST sections. Guided waves have been utilized to monitor the effect of notch and debond defects in concrete filled steel tubes simulating pitting and delamination of steel tubes from surrounding concrete caused by corrosion. Pulse transmission has been used to monitor the healthy and simulated damaged specimens. A methodology is developed and successfully applied for the monitoring of concrete filled steel tubular sections undergoing accelerated chloride corrosion. The ultrasonic signals efficiently narrate the state of steel tube undergoing corrosion.

Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) based Defect Characterization of Steam Generator Tubes using Artificial Neural Networks

  • Material defects in the Steam Generator Tubes (SGT) of sodium cooled fast breeder reactor (PFBR) can lead to leakage of water into sodium. The water and sodium reaction will lead to major accidents. Therefore, the examination of steam generator tubes for the early detection of defects is an important requirement for safety and economic considerations. In this work, the Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) based Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technique is used to perform the defect detection process. The rectangular notch defects on the outer surface of steam generator tubes are modeled using COMSOL multiphysics 4.3a software. The obtained MFL images are de-noised to improve the integrity of flaw related information. Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features are extracted from MFL images and taken as input parameter to train the neural network. A comparative study on characterization have been carried out using feed-forward back propagation (FFBP) and cascade-forward back propagation (CFBP) algorithms. The results of both algorithms are evaluated with Mean Square Error (MSE) as a prediction performance measure. The average percentage error for length, depth and width are also computed. The result shows that the feed-forward back propagation network model performs better in characterizing the defects.

Simulation Based Investigation of Focusing Phased Array Ultrasound in Dissimilar Metal Welds

  • Flaws at dissimilar metal welds (DMWs), such as reactor coolant systems components, Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM), Bottom Mounted Instrumentation (BMI) etc., in nuclear power plants have been found. Notably, primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in the DMWs could cause significant reliability problems at nuclear power plants. Therefore, phased array ultrasound is widely used for inspecting surface break cracks and stress corrosion cracks in DMWs. However, inspection of DMWs using phased array ultrasound has a relatively low probability of detection of cracks, because the crystalline structure of welds causes distortion and splitting of the ultrasonic beams which propagates anisotropic medium. Therefore, advanced evaluation techniques of phased array ultrasound are needed for improvement in the probability of detection of flaws in DMWs. Thus, in this study, an investigation of focusing and steering phased array ultrasound in DMWs was carried out using a time reversal technique, and an adaptive focusing technique based on finite element method (FEM) simulation. Also, evaluation of focusing performance of three different focusing techniques was performed by comparing amplitude of phased array ultrasonic signals scattered from the targeted flaw with three different time delays.

위상배열 EMAT의 제작 및 특성 평가 (Fabrication of Phased Array EMAT and Its Characteristics)

  • EMAT는 비접촉식 탐촉자인 동시에 모드 선택성이 우수하여 다양한 분야에 적용되고 있으나 근본적으로 에너지 전환효율이 낮아 신호 대 잡음비의 증가에 한계를 보인다. EMAT에 위상배열 기술을 접목하면 초음파의 집속 효과를 얻을 수 있으므로 낮은 전환효율의 문제를 극복하기 위한 하나의 해결방안이 될 수 있을 것으로 판단한다. 본 연구에서는 위상배열 EMAT에 대한 기초연구로 3~4개의 코일로 구성되는 표면파 및 수직횡파 발생용 위상배열 EMAT를 제작하고 각 요소코일에 공급하는 펄스의 지연으로부터 위상배열의 효과를 확인하고 방향특성을 측정하였다. 또한 시험편의 표면에 0.5 mm 깊이의 표면결함과 시험편 내부에 직경 0.5 mm의 측면 드릴 홀을 가공하여 제작된 위상배열 EMAT로 결함 신호를 검출하였으며, 이로부터 제작된 EMAT의 성능을 평가하였다.
