  • In this paper we suggest a development of surface defect inspection algorithms for cold mill strip using tree structure. The defects which exist in a surface of cold mill strip have a scattering or singular distribution. This paper consists of preprocessing, feature extraction and defect classification. By preprocessing, the binarized defect image is achieved. In this procedure, Top-hit transform, adaptive thresholding, thinning and noise rejection are used. Especially, Top-hit transform using local min/max operation diminishes the effect of bad lighting. In feature extraction, geometric, moment, co-occurrence matrix, histogram-ratio features are calculated. The histogram-ratio feature is taken from the gray-level image. For the defect classification, we suggest a tree structure of which nodes are multilayer neural network clasifiers. The proposed algorithm reduced error rate comparing to one stage structure.

  • This paper describes a new practical simplification method for feature-based solid models. In this approach, a solid model created using feature modeling operations is first simplified by the suppression of detailed features, and then, if necessary, the model is converted to a surface model to facilitate its modification. Finally, the simplified surface model is delivered to analysis packages. The algorithm was implemented based on CATIA V.5 and applied to mid-surface generation of plastic parts for structural analysis to prove the validity and usefulness.

  • This paper presents a new method of 3-D surface feature extraction using a quadratic pol expression. With a range image, we get an edge map through the modified scan line technique this edge map, we label a 3-dimensional object to divide object's region and extract cent corner points from it's region. Then we determine whether the segmented region is a planar or a curved from the quadric surface equation. we calculate the coefficients of the planar su the curved surface to represent regions. In this article. we prove performance of the metho synthetic and real (Odetics) range images.

  • Specimens of WC-Co were indented to measure the resulting crack size and unindented samples were fractured in 3-point flexure to obtain the strength and to measure characteristic features on the fracture surface. Fracture toughness was determined using fractography and compared to those determined using identation techniques. We show that principles of fracture mechanics can be applied WC-Co composites and can be used to analyze the fracture process. The fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. Characteristic feature observed in glasses, single crystals and polycrystalline materials known as mirror, mist, hackle, and crack branching were identified for these composites. We discuss the importance of fracture surface analysis in determining the failure-initiating sources and the failure behaviorof WC-Co composites.

  • This research presents the new method to fabricate small features through applying chemical mechanical micro machining(C3M) for Al5052 and single crystal silicon. To improve machinability of ductile and brittle material, reacted layer was formed on the surface before micro-drilling process by chemical reaction with $HNO_3$(10wt%) and KOH(10wt%). And then workpieces were machined to compare conventional micro-drilling process with newly suggested one. To evaluate whether or not the machinability was improved by the effect of chemical condition, surface defects such as burr, chipping and crack generation were measured. Finally, it is confirmed that C3M is one of the feasible tools for micro machining with the aid of effect of the chemical reaction.

  • The number of parts made of ceramic materials has gradually been increasing in field of from mechanical engineering to electronics engineering and, mechanical engineering ceramics have spread because of three very favourable characteristic features of their application, namely, heat, wear, and corrosion resistance. therefore, the elaboration of suitable grinding technologies is Important. grinding is problematic because crack-free ceramics are difficult to process owing to their particular micro structure. In this paper we report on the application of advanced precision grinding process, elaborating continuous wheel dressing. The removal rate can be increased significantly and surface roughness is improved. Various problems(roughness, ground surface etc)encountered in grinding of ceramics are also discussed.

  • Although some successful recognition algorithms have been developed, most of them did emphasize on extracting accurate interpretations without considerations of manufacturability. Evaluating the manufacturability for multiple features leads to produce the machining sequences. In this paper, the A* algorithm guarantees the optimal setup sequences with minimizing the machining cost. Also, tolerances including surface roughness are converted to STEP formats to be utilized for more reliable process plans. Finally, decision tables are used to create the detailed operational sequences based on geometric tolerances and surface roughness. Machining parameters such as feed, depth of cut, and cutting speed for each operation are added to the routing sheet. Windows are presented to show how the entire system works for a sample part.

  • The characteristics of elastic waves emanated from crack initiation in 6061 aluminum alloy subjected to fatigue loading are investigated through experiments. The objective of the study is to determine the differences in the properties of the signals generated from fatigue test and also to examine if the sources of the waves could be identified from the temporal and spectral characteristics of the acoustic emission (AE) waveforms. The signals are recorded using nonresonant, flat, broadband transducers attached to the surface of the alloy specimens. The time dependence and power spectra of the signals recorded during the tests were examined and classified according to their special features. Six distinct types of signals were observed. The waveforms and their power spectra were found to be dependent on the crack propagation stage and the type of fracture associated with the signals. The potential application of the approach in health monitoring of structural components using a network of surface mounted broadband sensors is discussed.

  • A slicing method by thin diamond blade is widely usd slicing of hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, glass and ferrite etc.. In this study, a new slicing system which realizes highly efficient and mirror surface slicing was developed by applying ELID-grinding with metallic bond diamond blades and its performance was evaluated. Hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, glass and ferrite were used as workpiece. Metallic bond diamond blades with grit sizes #325 and #2000 were used. Experimental results show that highly efficient slicing and good mirror surface can be successfully obtained using the developed slicing system with ELID features.

  • Sea surface cooling (SSC) with the passage of typhoons is examined in the East Sea using the Japan Meteorological Agency buoy data $(37^{\circ}45'N,\;134^{\circ}23'E)$ during 1983-2000 and a three-dimensional primitive equation model (the Princeton Ocean Model). Forty typhoons in this period induced the SST decrease ranging from about $-0.5^{\circ}C\;to\;-4.3^{\circ}C.$ Intense SSC $(<-2^{\circ}C)$ occurs with typhoons that passed mainly through the left-hand side of the buoy station. The model is implemented to examine a physical process of SSC with a typical-track typhoon in the northwestern Pacific $(24^{\circ}N\;to\;52^{\circ}N).$ The model well reproduces prominent features in the observation and addresses how it happens; SSC is induced mainly by momentum mixing effect stirred with the typhoon rather than upwelling.
